Granddaughter’s rage over graduation plans.

A few weeks ago OH (80, frail) & I met up with his daughter-in-law & grandkids to give GK#1 a 21st birthday gift & congratulate her on her law degree. I know she was disappointed to “only” have got a 2:1 but it’s from a very famous university & bloody good.

They have had their struggles: their Dad (my stepson) went AWOL from parenthood ten years ago, they were illegally evicted & homeless.
We are very proud of them.

GK invited us to her graduation (on a Friday), we talked about planning the trip & what she wanted us to wear for the photos, & DiL getting a day of work, GK#2 taking the day off school to be there.
OH & I both understood we were being asked to book the accommodation for the 5 of us & travel together.

So I booked us a flat for 2 nights - Thursday & Friday - & forwarded the confirmation asking when we could go up on the Thursday so I could book train tickets.

No reply.

Left a voicemail in case they’d missed the email.

Emailed again.

Got a scolding reply from GK#1 telling me it’s HER big day and she’s shocked, SHOCKED I booked accommodation (after we both understood we were being asked to, & checking with her whether she’d need it too) & complaining her mum is finding it hard to get time off from work (which I do not think I can be blamed for).

So I have no idea what’s going on.

i replied that of course it’s her big day & up to her who she has there, that she might forgive me if I misunderstood what she wanted, & pointed out that it’s too late to cancel the booking, but she’s welcome to use the accommodation if she wants.

I said if she wanted her granddad there she should let us know.

It’s a trek for us to get there, & not cheap: OH is blind & i cant drive, so the earlier we can book train tickets the better.

Silence since then.

What to do?

Am I unreasonable to feel rather hurt by this?

Can you unbook the flat? Get your money or at lrast some of it back?? Im so sorry this has happened. Your DGD is a spoed little madam who at 21 is not a child and should know how to behave better. I would send her a congratulations card and leave it at that.

No she can't. By the time the granddaughter kicked off they couldn't get their money back

Hope you have a lovely time in Oxford whatever happens

The disappointment with a 2.1 not a first is understandable if aiming for the bar as statistically those with a first more likely to get one of the very few pupillages. But then again being an Oxbridge graduate massively scews her odds. The bar council publishes a report which has very detailed statistics if you are interested Op (you come across very educated and supportive)

Nothing excuses her appalling treatment of you though. Will you please update how things go with graduation.

Most pupil barristers still coming from Oxbridge

A majority of pupil barristers (53%) have backgrounds at Oxford or Cambridge universities, while 42% come from private schools, new research has found.

Booking accommodation and trying to coordinate family travel with good intentions, only to get yelled at, is deeply ungrateful. Heavy family stress bubbling over.

Don't think anything necessarily needs to be bubbling over. I don't see anything that excuses the behaviour of the granddaughter

A little off topic - I'm so fecking tired of the word "boundaries". 😂

Let's bonfire it - along with passive aggressive and narcissist.

I don't mind them when used properly, but they have leached out into common parlance to mean, respectively, a self-righteousness about being selfish, someone daring to behave off-script ,and the term for a person who does things that annoy you.

As others have said. although it's very common for each graduate to be limited to 2 tickets for the actual degree ceremony, most universities have a separate area in which other relatives/friends can watch the ceremony onscreen. Therefore, additional guests commonly attend in this way and then all go off to a meal together.

I've no idea what's caused the granddaughter to throw a wobbler - but I'm now invested enough to want to know.

8 at some venues with the ou. Not the venue I graduated from though. No screen at any venue I got my degrees at but nothing stopping from family meeting later on

I think she's a gran even if technically not by blood

@YourGoldLurker Because the granddaughter hadn’t cottoned on? Obviously grandma didn’t know tickets were limited but it’s normal that they are. No idea why DGD didn’t know this because she will have had to book tickets. Maybe she’s forgotten to do this?
@ProfessoressaSazzasez As a mum of an August birthday DD, I know they are young. We also knew nothing about law and DD is now a barrister.

The problem with this career is supporting yourself while you study for the BPTC and during pupillage. That’s why she needs to apply for scholarships. She should know all this from the careers service at Oxford and other grads will have done this. The usual route for barristers is to be a judicial assistant but it’s worth having a chat about plans because even when dc get pupillage, earnings can be low. As they are for criminal barristers too. It can take years to earn decent money so career goals usually do need discussion. This isn’t necessarily for you to do but I’m just giving you a heads up.

I still don't think this excuses the radio silence. When I graduated last year from the minute I booked my graduation I was told how many tickets I could have. Even if the grandparents couldn't be there they could surely meet the family after. Even for a quick drink in the pub.

The OP was asked to book accommodation and is now being ignored. That is crap in my view

I’m not really clear what ‘boundaries’ you can have in mind.

Drop her from the birthday card list?

Never speak to her again?

Do what her father’s actual mother used to do & only get a Christmas present for one of the two girls?

it’s not like we live in each other’s pockets anyway.

God I hope so!

But she was talking quite a lot of detail about it - she got a first in the area of law she wants to specialise in, for example

I hope that’s not all confabulation: we’d have a whole new set of problems if it was!

Fingers crossed! Sorry didn't mean to add another layer of drama

Thing is: we love her & her sister & her Mum (who we very much admire) don’t want to abandon them (as they have been abandoned) & reckon she might regret not having her granddad (who is a member of the same university) at her graduation.

Edited

You're not abandoning her, you're simply not going to her graduation. Don't be too harsh with yourself. I think maybe the thought of her mum not being able to make it has tipped her over the edge. You sound very lovely and generous.

muggart · 15/09/2026 20:31

youve set an excellent example of how to deal with a difficult situation in a mature way- been civil, communicated on the issue, not got overly emotional. she is still young and has a lot to learn. hopefully this all gets resolved soon.

This is so level-headed OP,

I despair at all the hot air on here which is essentially adult tantrum-throwing dressed up as "boundaries." Big words don't turn something childish into something grown-up.

Re the masters, it isn't the worst idea if she is thinking of it. Having a specialism can help you into chambers or a law firm working in an area that particularly interests you. As for "cracking on with a career", a year or two is nothing when looking back.

Italiangreyhound · 15/09/2026 20:25

So sorry.

Millytante · 15/09/2026 20:19

Perfect. (Not a bit stiff, but appropriately matter of fact)
I’m appalled you have had to do it, as it is distressing for you. Still, I’m really pleased you have told them you will both be having a jolly old jaunt to Oxford regardless, and that’s that.

Imagine how the female dons in DLS’ Gaudy Night would have regarded such behaviour.
Still, I’m horribly fascinated, and hope young Rumpola will hurry up and explain herself.

Thank you to everyone for your takes, sympathy, advice & perspectives.

I felt we’d better make a decision while there’s still time - leave things unsaid & eventually there is no need to say them.

So I’ve emailed all three of them.

Said we’re sorry if there’s a misunderstanding, though we don’t understand how.

Said GC1 could have communicated better & been more understanding. Pointed out communication skills are life skills & avoid embarrassment.

Said we understand tickets to the event are limited & we are not at all bothered whether we’re in the room or not.

Said we’re sorry to hear DiL is having difficulty getting time off work & hope that has been resolved & she can be there.

Pointed out that by the time GC1 replied it was too late for us to cancel the booking, so it stands.

Said we plan to be using it.

And that as they know OH’s state of health they will know why we are staying for the two nights - and that this of course need have no bearing on what they decide to do.

And that literally all we want to do is to cheer GC1 when she emerges with a parchment. And that it would be a great pity if she doesn’t have people who care for her there.

Pointed out there are another 3 beds available in the flat, & that if any of the three of them needs them for either night, they will be very welcome, & if they want to meet for a drink or a meal either evening, to let us know.

And that’s all.

I sounded rather stiff & snotty, I must say, & I feel as if Ive lobbed a grenade…

But we’ll go & have a nice wander round Oxford & maybe I’ll look up my brother for a cuppa.

(I do hope she hasn’t screwed up her degree & been too scared to say, though…)

This is perfect IMO. Not snotty at all. It’s gently firm, clear and welcoming, in that you say they’re welcome to stay. You don’t sound angry, you sound calm and thoughtful. Everything you said is what I’d have said.
