AIBU to think my mum slapping me as a teenager was unacceptable?

I am now 34yrs old, but have a memory from aged 13/14yrs old that I felt strongly was real for years - it was always brushed under the rug by my (now elderly) parents.

As a 13/14yr old teenager, I remember my mum (then working as a school teacher, driving me to school alongside her) pulling up in a supermarket car park at about 8:30am and slapping me hard in the face and telling me to 'shut the fuck up'.

I remember the car park, I remember the sting and the shock of the slap. I remember becoming completely silent.

I have brought it up with her numerous times, and she dismissed it, but finally today she admitted that she did slap me hard around the face - her explanation was that I was "a horrible, obnoxious teenager always making her late for work" and then also brushed it off talking about how much under stress she was under, it was a "one-off" etc, and how our dad (her husband) was also abusive and putting her under duress. Which I knew already, because you're not completely oblivious as a child...

But AIBU to think that this is completely unacceptable behaviour on her part? Why has she never acknowledged or apologised for this act? This has haunted me and it was the last thing I needed as a teenager already frightened of my dad, who was generally worse.
Does she deserve the benefit of the doubt? She did become quite emotional after confessing. But I'm honestly shocked it took her this long to admit to this.

Otherwise, she is a gentle, loving and compassionate lady, so I can't understand it all. Not sure how to address it further with her...

Sounded like she was under immense stress and in general she was a good mum, a one off that she regrets and probably why she didn’t want to bring it up. No one is perfect…let it go

I have a similar memory when I was mouthing off at DM (this was very unusual, I was a very quiet teenager). She gave me such a clout round the side of my head, it knocked me flying. I never did it again!

Parents make mistskes and she made a HORRIBLE one

But it was 20 years ago and presumably shes been in your life ever since

Shes apologised now, not much else you can do - forgive her, sounds like she had a shite time and lashed out x

But she didn’t apologise.

It wasn't okay then and it isn't okay now. Nor is lying about it to your face and trying to make you think you'd imagined this. Does she still work with children? I hope not. Don't leave your children with her.

It was mostly the fact that she glazed over it all this time and acted as though I had imagined it, leaving me wondering reality and questioning my memories, I guess.
I do still struggle with anyone touching or coming near my face ever since.
I didn't trust her for a while back then.
Now, I do feel for her. I think she was struggling heavily.
Hopefully I can maintain/build a more honest and compassionate relationship with her in the near future. Difficult conversations.

Edit: when I say 'glazed over it', I mean that I did try to raise it numerous times, but she actually laughed it off as me having nightmares and "the poltergeist" coming to get me

What exactly do you expect her to do now some 20 years later?

amber763 · 14/09/2026 19:50

It was a one off, decades ago. You need to move on.

Your poor mum...if it was a one off I'd assume she'd reached the end of her tether. She shouldn't have done it obviously but if she was an otherwise kind loving mum, then cut her some slack.

YANBU, I was regularly hit as a child as discipline and would never do it to my children. My parents are ‘good’ parents too.
