Dd is 5 and has only been back at school a few weeks. Today her teacher pulled me aside to tell me that two boys thought it would be funny to draw on the back of her cardigan with a black marker. She apologised but I don’t care about the cardigan however I am concerned that she is becoming a regular target for these boys. I have now found out that this wasn’t the only thing that happened today. Apparently the boys also broke a model DD had made and ruined some of her artwork. DD apparently retaliated by drawing on their artwork, and all three children got into trouble.
The teacher said she’s having “a lot of bother” with DD and these boys and that they all need reminding to keep their hands and feet to themselves. I have also since found out that last week one of the boys became upset with another child, then hit DD before running off to the bathroom. I don’t know whether the school are aware of the full circumstances of that incident.
I’m concerned that there may have been more hitting/shoving etc. than DD has told me about. She’s five and isn’t necessarily going to give me a detailed account of everything that happens during a school day.
The teacher spoke to DD and told her she needs to make “good choices” and suggested she plays with the girls instead because of these boys as they are getting her into trouble. DD is now saying she doesn’t like school because “they’re mean to me” and that she wishes one of the boys was still in nursery. I’m absolutely not saying DD is blameless. If she retaliated by drawing on their artwork, that’s obviously not acceptable either. But I’m uncomfortable with the solution being that she should just avoid these boys. If they’re repeatedly hitting, pushing, damaging her belongings/work or deliberately doing things to her, surely the adults need to manage that rather than expecting a five-year-old to avoid them? I’m considering keeping her home for abit while I speak properly to the school and find out exactly what has been happening and what they’re going to do about it.i am also aware that I may be overreacting and she is my first child and I had awful bullying at school so am sensitive to it.
