Would you class this person as a close friend?

If you hadn't seen them since December 2025 despite being 1 hour apart, and that meeting was arranged by you, and that you hadn't spoken since then except for a happy birthday on WhatsApp group chat and a 'congratulations ' message on the group chat. This person was one of my best friends, and this is the extent of the contact I have now, not through my own lack of trying but I've given up.

She has kids and meets up with Mum friends (I don't have kids yet)

I agree that friendships ebb and flow…

As a mum to 2 small children I’d say she has the time to send a text or check in, if she wanted too. I’d expect her to find mum friends and perhaps in this stage of life be closer to them right now, but go make ZERO effort and not invite you to see baby is a red flag to me.

Some people do go distant due to different paths then find their way back, some fade out and never return.

After my first baby my close friend met him once and then just faded out of my life. I spent ages being hurt over it, it was weird as I was always happy to meet childfree every so often. She made close friends without kids and just forgot about our friendship I guess. 3 years later we’re back in each others lives and although not as close as before we text every now and then and have met up a few times.

Is it possible you could reach out and say “hey, I miss you and our friendship and I’d love to see your daughter/son. I know you’ve been busy but I don’t want our friendship to fade”

some people don’t even realise they are fading you out

PPs make a good point. I'd say she is no longer a close friend, due to a radical divergence of life conditions and priorities. There's another definition of 'close friend', in which you may still be as valuable to each other but currently detached.

This year, I've met up with half a dozen old friends I haven't seen for over 20 years 😲 There's been next to no communication, not even a Christmas text in most cases. With most, we easily picked up conversation as if we'd last met a week ago. Are these close friends? We're emphatically not in each other's lives but we know and understand each other better than the people I now see more regularly.

I'm on the side of leaving it fallow, while keeping the door open.
