The Isles of Scilly. Anywhere further is not worth it just for a long weekend, and that place is magical. Plus so extortionately expensive 3 days is my limit!

icircleyouuuuuu · 14/09/2026 17:19

Woah! Very affordable

Virtually next door is a town called Sopot, beautiful

Morepositivemum · 15/09/2026 18:25

Am in Ireland- I so want to get to Edinburgh it’s killing me!!!!

mindutopia · 15/09/2026 18:24

I usually go somewhere random in Spain, whatever has the cheapest flights that aren’t at some stupid time.

SpaceAngel1999 · 15/09/2026 18:02

We’ve done krakow, Marbella, Praia de rocha in Portugal and Amsterdam

PrivateCitizen · 15/09/2026 18:01

I recommended Bratislava earlier in this thread simply because it's small and an easily accessible place that's close to the airport.

I'll also vouch for San Sebastian, Rome, Venice, Cadiz, Syracuse/Ortigia in Sicily, but if you're arriving Saturday evening and leaving Monday morning you've only really got two nights and one whole day, Not everything will be open on a Sunday so that limits what you can see and do..

Places like San Sebastian aren't as close to airports and I'd recommend a slightly longer weekend to make the most of the fantastic restaurants and pintxo bars. Cities such as Rome and Venice have so much to see that I think you need at least three nights and two full days (especially if one is a Sunday).

@Dancingspleen1

I wasn't being snarky, putting anybody down, mocking or eye-rolling.

It was a genuine question.

BewareOfTheFakes · 15/09/2026 17:31

icircleyouuuuuu · 14/09/2026 21:42

Not sure it would work for just two days?

It’s chaotic but oh my god you’ll want to do it again if you do it. We’ve done Friday to Sunday…still my kids favourite holiday and they’ve been a few places.

Dancingspleen1 · 15/09/2026 07:36

FromaBubblegumTree · 14/09/2026 17:48

How many short haul flights have been cancelled as a result of you not booking a ticket?

I don't get the snarky comments to people that highlight there is a real problem with climate crisis. People that are aware of the issue, taking it seriously and taking personal responsibility to do what they can, however small. Unfortunately the majority are ignoant or don't care but why put someone down that does?
We will all be forced to change our lifestyles eventually - that's not an if, just a when. I hope the people that rolled your eyes and yawned all remember how you mocked others for caring.

Op, you don’t need to get the train to Scotland. You could just fly, I usually do. Edinburgh is amazing this time of year.

But when you look at how much it costs it’s basically the same as a trip abroad ☹️ Edinburgh has always been on my list.

To be honest I just want a weekend away, but uk breaks are just too expensive for what they are.

It doesnt matter if you dont "believe" vegan is healthy or good for the planet. What matters is the science and a plant based diet is listed by climate scientists as one of the most impactful things, even above stopping flying and is also supported by the leading nutrition body in the Uk as safe for every stage of life, and has many well documented benefits including longevity. You shouldn't be lecturing people if you're not able to look at the science when it doesnt suit you and just go off "vibes" instead, which is the exact thing these short term flyers are doing.

Edited

I am prepared to look at the science. I have and I make my choices. I am not a vegan and never will be. I choose to eat a diet that is local to me not avocados and vegan food flown halfway round the planet. I make conscious choices every day about where my food comes from.

But that is not the point. If we all do what we can then every little bit adds up. None of have to be perfect. We just have to be doing what we can do. I’m not even suggesting not going on holiday at all. I’m suggesting not going on holiday for the sake of it. To a destination you have no great desire to see. The OP has had numerous other holidays abroad this year. She doesn’t have any great desires to go to any of the places suggested. She just wants to get away. There are plenty of amazing places to see at home in the Uk. She doesn’t have to fly. That’s all

Unexpectedlysinglemum · 15/09/2026 00:22

Copenhagen

Yellowcakestand · 15/09/2026 00:14

Madrid is one of my favourites.

SeraphinaRainbird · 15/09/2026 00:09

Amsterdam or Gibraltar.

angelcake20 · 15/09/2026 00:05

What do you like doing on holiday? History, museums, wandering round pretty towns, eating/drinking? How important are budget and weather? So many places to choose from. I’ve not looked at where you can fly to from the southwest (we’re London) but, ignoring Italy, and anywhere that I think needs more than two days, consider Seville, Nuremberg, Bremen, Hamburg, Leiden (from Amsterdam), Poznan, Tallinn, Cologne, Salzburg, Vilnius, Valencia, Rotterdam, Dubrovnik, Porto, Geneva.

Sixpence39 · 14/09/2026 23:58

notwhingingjuststatingfacts · 14/09/2026 20:16

If few enough people flew then the flight wouldn’t be scheduled. Your argument is completely nonsensical airlines work on supply and demand. If there was no demand there wouldn’t be anywhere near the number of flights.

To answer your questions no I haven’t flown on over 16 years. I’m not vegan - I don’t believe being vegan is remotely healthy either for humans or for the planet. I am not perfect I drive a car and do more miles than I would like - 90% of my mileage is work related. I last had a holiday in 2021 - in the Uk. I am self employed and do what I can and source actively source locally made and sustainable materials wherever possible.
So yes I do my bit!

What’s your closest airport? See where they fly too and pick the one that has the airport closest to the centre. You don’t want to spend your time on transfers. AI is pretty good for this. Put in where you want to go, maximum travel time, and what you like doing.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

You, quote, "don't want to derail this thread" after not helping answer OP at all.smd using her question as a platform to preach your own values.

Fantastic 👏👏 I needed a laugh

Edited

I did answer her question. You just don’t like the answer I gave because it has hit a nerve with you. I guess you know that your own contribution to climate change is a negative one. So you would rather undermine me than confront your own issues.
