Is matcha tea just horrible? How do I make it taste nice?

Just spent £8 on some matcha tea powder - interested in it's medicinal properties as have Long covid.
The problem is - it's horrible! Smells of fish and tastes bitter - any tips to make it palatable b4 I go back to PG tips? Thanks

Thanks for all comments but sadly I think it's going in the bin or maybe to my millennial neighbour x

Don't give up so easily!!!!

Some was on offer at my local shop, so I tried it. Really didn't like it at first but it had grown on me by the end of the bag and I have now bought more!

I don't add anything to it other than water, and see it as the tea equivalent of an espresso.

i love it but I would never drink it outside of Japan (yes I know how that sounds!). I lived in Japan and attended traditional tea ceremonies, and when you have it freshly brewed, with the lovely mochi sweets to go with it, it is amazing. The thought of mixing it into a latte or with ginger etc is revolting!
Maybe order some direct from a Japanese grocery store like Waso?

I don’t mind a matcha latte but also like it plain. There are places in the UK that you can get a decent cup of matcha without the milk. I like the matcha at the stand in Japan House in Kensington and they sell nice little wagashi to go with it.

I drink green tea all the time but matcha is horrible. I've tried it all ways - even had matcha flavoured ice cream once. Horrible. Never known it to smell of fish though. I'd bin it. It's far more of a waste to drink something you hate. Or give it away.

It's horrid isn't it!! Who is drinking it and actually enjoying it? Why is it everywhere? The whole thing is a giant mystery to me and I assumed it was just my taste palate being off, so glad I'm not going mad or missing something.

OrchardOwl · 15/09/2026 11:47

What? If you don’t like it just throw it away.

I'm repeating myself here, but it's lovely as a latte with foamed heated milk. I wouldn't drink it with water. I don't use any sweeteners/flavours though.

skygroundsky · 15/09/2026 11:52

if the water you are using is too hot, it will make it taste bitter. make sure the water is the right temp. Also check the amount you are using. It's not a full teaspoon, more like 1/3 or 1/2

Life’s too short to put up with this, try baking with it, if you still don’t like it pass it on to a friend

bababamama · 15/09/2026 11:58

I’ve had real Japanese matcha in a tea ceremony, it was drinkable but didn’t inspire me to have it again, the little sweet treats also served were very tasty. It’s basically a fad and any health benefits are counteracted by the other ingredients these western matcha drinks contain. It shouldn’t have milk even

MargoLivebetter · 15/09/2026 12:00

@Greedybilly I feel your pain. I had the same experience and I have a bag of green powder sitting in my cupboard that I am loathe to bin because it cost £8. I've had some really delicious matcha drinks from cafes but my own have been resolutely DISGUSTING. I've tried with cold water first, with milk, with honey, with maple syrup and they are all just variations on repulsive!

This thread is making me realise that despite paying £8, i've bought cheap shit and I'll probably use it to feed the plants or to give to unwelcome guests!!!!

malificent7 · 15/09/2026 12:00

It is fishy as you have scalded the matcha.
Buy vanilla match powder. Put cold oat milk in a mug. Add 1tsp matcha in the oat milkwhisk with matcha. Add hot water. Drink...delicious.

vladimirVsvolodymr · 15/09/2026 12:06

I’m not sure which one wins in taste; Matcha or Moringa, but I still drink them 😂

GiveOverRover · 15/09/2026 12:09

It tastes like a front lawn.

Anything you put in there like syrups and whatnot will undo any of the supposed benefits, the best thing you can do is accept that you just spent £8 on finding out what matcha tastes like.

GreenCaterpillarOnALeaf · 15/09/2026 12:12

It tastes like grass. I actually like it, but I used to eat bits of grass a child so I guess for me it just reminds me of being a weird little kid eating grass.

I do think it’s better with oat milk though, but that doesn’t stop it tasting like grass it just makes it taste like liquid grass porridge.

trainedopossum · 15/09/2026 12:14

In the summer I make a jar of it with slices of fresh ginger and a slug of apple juice and keep in the fridge. It’s spicy and quenching and the juice is a nice counter to the tea’s bitterness.
