AIBU to think of course all the anti-trans posts on this website and others are leading to real life harm?

Just seen a video of a trans woman minding her business in a train station getting horribly bullied by some Tommy Robinson wanna-be and couldn't help but think back to all the aggressive threads I've seen on Mumsnet.

Pages and pages of vilifying innocent trans people, calling them perverts and all sorts with zero evidence of anything of the sort of course would lead to people like this harassing and attacking trans people in public. I've see a few of so-called GC brigade say 'this isn't what we wanted' but it is the end, isn't it? If you do see trans people as disgusting abusive perverts trying to sneak into your changing rooms and hurt your daughter, you'd want them to be bashed in public yeah?

Am I wrong to think their chickens are coming home to roost and certain posters will want to claim they never had a hand in it all?

I think the ED doctor is Irish?

Either way, male suicides are not for women to solve by way of eroding their own freedom and hard won rights.

Do you know what WOULD help - if we told boys it’s fine to wear dresses, make up, have feminine interests and it doesn’t make them women. And to tell men if they have a problem with other men looking feminine then grow the fuck up, get over it and do something about your own toxic masculinity. This is not women’s fight. We don’t have to solve EVERYTHING

ED consultant here. Ive had 6 trans lives lost in the past 6 months alone. The bullying is horrific. I understand non medical staff aren't educated that being trans is a real thing but the ignorance is horrifying. They are just trying to live like everyone else.

Yes it is sad that there is so much mental illness in the trans community. They of course need professional support. If you are an ED consultant you'll know that it is the people who choose to take their own lives who are responsible, some like you do try to apportion blame on families and circumstances but it is the mental illness not the circumstance that is the problem.

Happy to let anyone 'live like anyone else' but men should not use women only areas. Why on earth we have to keep saying this I've no idea.

Not wishing in any way to be insensitive but no lives are misplaced, the actual causes will be different and relevant.

Women cannot be held responsible for keeping men's lives preserved by sacrificing their own rights and needs and lives. Obviously.

For posters aghast at the thought that some cross dressers do so because of a sexually driven fetish, here is the ICD definition of 'gender incongruence'.

(The site is a bit tricky, especially on a phone, so I'll include a screenshot in case the link goes awry.

Gender incongruence is section 17, sexual health.)

Note that paraphilias are to be excluded.

But then why does that mean they get to use women’s spaces? Why do trans activists not do a whole campaign on getting men to budge up, be kind and accept their GNC brethren? Why should women give up single sex spaces because of men? What benefit do women get out of this?

This.

I’m glad that poster acknowledges that men are the problem. It’s just a shame they understand that’s EXACTLY why women don’t want them in our spaces.

It’s depressingly anti-feminist for anyone to suggest that he first solution to male-on-male violence is for women’s rights and spaces to be eroded and compromised. When will it EVER be that men pull their fucking fingers out and do something about their hate towards each other

It's not a plop and run I just had a family to give dinner to and put to bed. Sorry not all of us are glued to the board all hours of the day.

So to answer some replies

  1. I specified it wasn't just mumsnet adding to the vitriol but also several sites like it. The idea that hateful posting on the internet hasn't lead to real world harm in a number of ways for several groups of minorities is preposterous and dangerous to ignore how we got to where we are.

2.I personally believe that often times women are erased from social movements, including the bad ones. I'm sure many of the racist thugs marching against immigrants have wives/girlfriends who agree with them but just had to stay home for one reason or another so yes I think certain women play a part in how violent men behave. Maybe if women stopped breeding with them their penchant for violence might disappear.

3.Of course I care about women being harassed in public but going after trans people does sod all to help them. My honest opinion is that all this energy towards trans people and how they need to be banned to keep woman and girls safe is just a distraction to help some women pretend they can protect themselves from SA. When the truth is, it's basically legal in this country. With a less than 2% the fact is there is very little reason for predatory men not to do what they like, and no sign on a door will stop them.

Now I don't know about the rest of you, but I have work in the morning so will be signing off for the night.

Such kindness. Much thought.

OP, you appear both misinformed and aggressive. I suggest reading up on the issues involved. You can hop on the feminist boards if you like, plenty of people there with a depth of info on the medical, legal, and historical facts.

YANBU. It's been bubbling under the surface on here for years, but only the past year or two become more overt. (I've been around since practically the dawn of time)
People openly calling trans women sexual fetishists/perverts (or using in gang codes that they think nobody else understands to try and get away with it)
Then all riling each other up over something or other that may not even be true, but don't let rationale get in the way....
Anyone trying to engage who's not "of same mind" is demonised or ridiculed.
Of course it's going to affect in real life eventually.

Any man accessing spaces unlawfully where women and little girls are supposed to be free of men, where he’s not wanted and doesn’t belong, is a pervert in my book. What would you call it?

Im far more concerned about the women than the poor menz being called perverts. But I’m sure someone will pick you soon

We’re talking specifically about the ones on the anti-trans side, though. We know people visit from other sites and places and we can’t know their sex, What is curious is that men - more than a few - post as ‘feminists’ on FWR unobstructed. What could or should be a single-sex space, ironically, isn’t.

'Anti trans' is defamatory, lazy, and inaccurate.

Women advocating for womens rights are not 'anti trans'.

Moosli · 15/09/2026 07:01

No, that wasn’t what I meant by “plenty”, although I don’t doubt there are some in that category.

I meant there are many male posters that participate regularly on the board as ‘feminists’.

What fraction do you estimate are male posters on FWR who regularly post there in support of female single sex provisions excluding male people with transgender identities?

‘many’ and ‘plenty’ = less than 5%? ,10%? 20% ?or 30% ? 40% ?

Having been a regular on that board for years, I would generously estimate less than 5%.

If you lost lives in the USA then why is it British Women in the UK that are at fault?

How did these lives get 'lost' exactly? You are going to need to be more specific about how they were 'lost'.

Oh the ‘if men want to attack women no sign in the door will stop them’ 🙄

Okey doke we just won’t bother trying to protect girls or women at all then shall we? Don’t bother locking your house, because if burglars want to get in they will. Don’t bother giving women single sex spaces because men as a sex class never did us any harm eh?

I am GC , I hold very strong beliefs and do not think it possible to change gender. I am entitled to those views. However, I would not make any comment to an individual in a public place , I might hold a view about them but that is in my head alone. It would be different if they broke the law and entered a female toilet or changing room - I would mention this to whoever “owned” or was responsible, I would not make a public comment to that individual.

I think plenty gives an overly optimistic impression of the numbers of male posters amongst the regular posters on FWR.

Mind you, it could be said that a large % of those who support male people accessing female single sex provisions may be male posters. Is that what you mean by ‘plenty’?

Otherwise it would be more accurate to say a small % of FWR regulars are male posters.

Sorry I mean for all the posts where FWR posters are encouraging men to harass transpeople? Otherwise why would OP come on here scolding women. I mean, if women defending their sex based rights is transphobic, does that mean TRA demanding trans rights are misogynistic?

Or…. Could this be the backlash transpeople were warned about? If men with a trans identity hadn’t decided they were entitled to be in women’s spaces there wouldn’t be a problem would there?

AdeleRochester · 15/09/2026 05:50

BandyAid · 14/09/2026 21:02

Most of the debate here is ok, because it focuses o legitimate women's rights but there is still quite a lot of the 'cross dressing is a dirty fetish' narrative here, which I find really offensive. That tars trans people with the same brush , and is just not the case.

Even a cursory glance at books , articles, interviews, X or Reddit posts by transwomen will show you that at least a proportion of trans identified men are performing their sexual fetish by dressing as women and accessing women’s spaces.

Now that might make you uncomfortable to think about but it is absolutely relevant to discussions about whether men should be allowed into women’s single sex spaces.

Remember single sex spaces are mostly those where women are either in a state of undress or are otherwise vulnerable.

We legislate sex segregation due to the behaviour of the minority of men who might seek to harm, assault or murder women and girls. “Men” includes transwomen.

We keep put all men even if only a small proportion of them would do us harm.

We have to legislate based on facts, even the unpleasant ones.

sashh · 15/09/2026 05:39

How do you know it was a trans 'woman'?

It could have been a cross dresser.
