To think banning fried eggs is a step too far?

Whilst I agree with most of this, what’s wrong with an egg in decent oil?

If children won't eat what's on offer they will get no nutrition from it at all. Lots of children eat such limited diets at home that I wonder how they will respond to the healthy lunches on offer at school. Their packed lunches and breakfast from home could be a lot worse. There needs to be a big push to educate and train parents on how to feed their children properly. It's no good adding to the load of schools without laying the ground in the early years.

Hahahaha. You don’t have a special needs child with ARFID do you? Don’t judge stuff you don’t know. Educate yourself.

Why can't schools serve traditional British dinners, meat, potatoes and 2 veg etc? With pudding and custard for dessert?

Cost. And a drive to be modern.

Because it's not what most people want to eat, it's too heavy for modern life. Too much meat causes bowel cancer.

Most people don't choose that food, why should children have such a limited diet?

Plus it's expensive in ingredients, time and fuel.

All fried food will be banned I understand
The new model seems good

They should just eat gruel and be thankful for it.

Wow. I really hope you’re not a parent and just a troll.

It’s also what used to be served as a matter of routine when l was at school. A set menu every day - some form of protein, potatoes cooked in various ways and one or two veg. There was the understanding back then, that not all children would have access to that kind of diet, so it provided at least one hot, healthy and balanced meal.

But eating a small amount of meat with a couple of different vegetables and potatoes is a balanced meal, it's not heavy and it doesn't cause cancer.

What do children want to eat instead?

The ones I know all want to eat sausages, chicken nuggets, chips, burgers and plain pasta!

OonaStubbs · 19/09/2026 13:39

Meat & two veg is certainly a lot more healthy than turkey twizzlers and such like that I see school kids gorging themselves on nowadays!

All of which is not healthy

I don’t think this goes far enough personally. Eating habits in the UK need a total overhaul. No need for chips, cakes, cereals or fried food at all. Plenty of notes we could and should take from European, especially Scandinavian neighbours. Boiled or scrambled eggs, fish, chia puddings, overnight oats, soups, vegetables, cottage cheese, hummus, rye bread, Greek yoghurt with fruit, frozen yoghurt or frozen bananas as desserts etc. Whole foods rather than processed, fried, sugary rubbish. In homes as well as schools ideally, but schools, where they are at the habit forming age, and so influenced by what the children around them consume is so crucial, I think.

Scandinavian? Excuse me while I laugh…
My Swedish friend (now back in Sweden after many years in the U.K.) would never eat any green veg, except perhaps a minute portion of broccoli. She lives largely on eggs, cheese, ham, bread/crispbread, makes a lot of sweet cakes/buns, and puts a load of cream (usually single) in just about everything, including scrambled eggs.

I would add, though, that’s she’s active (a lot of dog walking) and not overweight.

I am waiting for food pills to be invented. All your dietary requirements in one small pill. No more other food will be required. We were promised the pills many years ago along with flying cars and day trips to Mars and Jupiter so hopefully they will be here soon.
