AIBU to feel upset my daughter-in-law will not help with our dog?

I know I probably IABU but I need a little moan. My husband & I are currently in a very difficult situation with a very ill relative and we need to travel to see them urgently.

It’s all happened very quickly and as a result we are struggling to find someone to look after our dog while we are away. We have 3 children - our 2 daughters are always happy to chip in with the dog where they can when we are in a bind but my son’s wife does not like dogs and won’t have them in her house which i do understand but means our dog has to stay in the garden when we go to their house which isn’t always ideal depending on the weather etc and I know it annoys my daughters.

Anyway both my daughters have jobs with no flexibility or working from home options so can’t help on this occasion. My son is working abroad. My Daughter-in-Law is a housewife so theoretically could help but as previously mentioned she refuses to have anything to do with the dog.

I know she is perfectly within her rights and it’s our dog not hers but I’m finding it quite hard not to feel quite cross about the whole situation as I feel this is adding an additional layer of stress in already horrible circumstances.

AIBU to feel this way ?

I haven't met many people scared of a cockapoo to be honest 😂

Which was the example I used.

My daughter is absolutely terrified of all dogs. There is no way I would impose one on her. Why should she have to put up with a dog slobbering and jumping on her?

Ohdearnotthisagain · 13/09/2026 21:35

I note the son in laws get no mention here. Must be women’s work I guess.

Put your dog in a kennel and for the love of gos stop taking it over there when you know she doesn’t like it!

BeigeandGreige · 13/09/2026 21:35

Does the ill relative genuinely really need both of you to go?

If there really is no other way around this then maybe just one of you go.

I would help my parents or PIL out without hesitation, but I love animals and dogs.

This. I quite like some dogs. I do not want a dog in my home. At all. Ever. I have LOTS of friends with dogs and they do not bring their dogs to my home ever because they know I don’t like having a dog inside.

In an emergency I’d be more than happy to go to THEIR houses and help with their dogs but not in my house. Ever.

None of my friends ask twice about bringing their dog to my home. Why do you bring your dog to your DIL’s house? I wouldn’t even want a dog in my garden! Because it’s MY garden and I choose NOT to have a dog and I don’t want it to wee and poo and walk about over things.

(I really don’t hate dogs and I’m genuinely fond of a few but I don’t want them in my home or car or garden. Ever.)

That sums it up from me.
I have family with dogs. I'd be perfectly happy to call and walk / feed them but no chance of having a dog inside my house.

TriciaA1991 · 13/09/2026 21:34

As someone who would do anything for anyone, I would not have a dog in my house. I would go to their house and look after it there, but not in my home.

I understand your stress as I have single handedly looked after ill parents (with a sister and brother not prepared to help) but I still think you are being unreasonable.
I suspect if it was your son refusing, you would feel differently .......

You have no idea whether DIL is living off 'his' money or not, although obviously if you're the sort of person who thinks the SAHP of a toddler without their own income is 'living off' the working spouse you'd be the sort of MIL to steer clear of.

She could have her own income streams and assets. They could be living in a home she brought to the marriage. It's an odd thing to invent.

Agree, this is incredibly misogynistic. DIL is presumably raising the children and organising everyone’s lives. That is work (I am not a SAHM BTW, but I support them as most of what they do goes unnoticed).

Bridang · 13/09/2026 21:34

Wow, you couldn’t pay me any money to live with a dog. You should not even have asked.

Spidey66 · 13/09/2026 21:33

I’m a dog owner and lover but not everybody likes them (why I’ll never know, dogs rock, but they don’t!)

Sorry back from dinner, I wasn’t expecting so many posts. As I said I know i can’t expect her to look after the dog but it’s a stressful and emotional time and I’m feeling quite fragile at the moment.

We do have several pet sitters that we use regularly but none of them are free at such short notice.

Thankfully it looks like one of my friends might be able to step in and help.

But you ARE expecting her to look after your dog.
And you're feeling cross that she won't.

You are being completely unreasonable, OP.

You haven't mentioned the option of kennels, or do you not like to leave your dog in kennels?

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 13/09/2026 21:33

I love dogs but YAB massively UR in this instance!! Not everyone likes dogs and that’s fine, she is under absolutely no obligation to help you and you are a CF to even be a tiny bit annoyed about it.

Assuming there’s two of you, one goes to the ill relative and one stays with the dog?

Cockapoos have unpredictable traits and suffer from separation anxiety and are high energy- definitely not dogs for someone who doesn’t like them. I’m definitely scared of them. And the breed doesn’t matter really.

Gobbledegoo · 13/09/2026 21:32

If you own a dog it is Your responsibility. Not your DD, DS, DIL or SIL, DPs, anyone else: YOUR responsibility. Out visiting: Leave your dog at home or at a suitable Dog daycare or kennels. Only take your dog where they are truly welcome and never to somewhere with children or cats.

YANBU.

People who don’t like dogs are dicks. Almost without exception.

What about people who don’t like dogs because they’ve been attacked by a dog? Are they supposed to still love dogs?

SceptredIsle · 13/09/2026 21:31

JeanSimmons · 13/09/2026 21:26

That's not the point. The point is that OP's DIL doesnt like dogs. I don't either. They smell IMO. It is beyond cheeky and entitled to expect a dog hater to give one house room. The DIL's being a housewife is zero to do with anything. OP sounds like the MIL from hell and I'd be giving her a wide berth.

the point is that some people make an effort in an emergency. In this instance, they would at least come and feed the dog, and walk it once during the day until the pet sitter is free and the others are off from work, for example.

No one is talking about giving the dog a spa weekend in your own home and giving it your bed.

You are the perfect example why people don't like the ones who are so proud they "don't like dog". It's not about the dogs, it's just the generally unpleasant attitude.

If you can help someone when they are stuck in an emergency, why wouldn't you? We are talking friends or family! I am glad people around me are decent human beings.

blondeboobshell · 13/09/2026 21:31

Totally unreasonable you are responsible for your dog not other people. Train your dog to manage being alone and pay for care

Blushingm · 13/09/2026 21:30

FastFood · 13/09/2026 21:17

I'm with you OP. I find it weird to not be willing to help a family member or a friend in need.
I'm not fond of kids but would look after my friends' kids in a heartbeat if they were facing an emergency.
I don't really like carrying heavy boxes around, but I'm always happy to give a hand to someone who needs help moving houses.

Now, if I'm honest, I'd hate my dog to stay with someone who doesn't like them, so I'd be looking for an alternative solution. Hope you find someone soon OP.

Dogs and kids are completely different though

You are being outrageous to even bring the dog to her house and put it in the garden when you visit

what made you think that was ok ?
id be so pissed off with you for that- dont do that again

you are pet owners snd should have plans and back up plans. You are older now and both more likely to have these situations arise in the family or for yourselves make plans that don't involve her and definitely dont be resentful to her

This. And trying to get her daughters to gang up on her DIL? Very poor behaviour. She's lucky that this woman has any of them round at all.

Yes perhaps for the best, you did sound rather hatstand.

Mymumsthebest · 13/09/2026 21:26

Happytaytos · 13/09/2026 19:40

I don't like dogs and would never do this for someone even in a emergency. I don't like them, I don't trust them, they make me anxious. Sorry. Get a kennel.

Yep exactly the same for me. I would do most things to help out most people but i just couldnt do this. Its really not on to be cross with her. That can easily turn into resentment, when YABVU not her.

As a PP said though, it sounds like the OP and her daughters have given the DIL a hard time about it previously when OP has taken her dog to the DILs home against her wishes (hence why it's had to stay in the garden).
I would be prepared to put money on the fact that the first time DIL allowed the dog in her house even though this is an emergency, she would be expected to host the dog at all times in the future. DIL is damned if she does and damned if she doesn't.

Yeah I agree that she shouldn't be taking the dog round when there's no emergency

Exactly this!
I don't like cleaning but would do it for my parents if they got ill and couldn't do it.
I don't like noisy toddlers but would look after my nephew in an emergency.

It's not about being a dog lover it's about being kind to family in need.
