AIBU to want an apology after a colleague injured my ankle?

a few weeks ago I was coming out of the staff room at work and a colleague came flying in, crashed into me, knocked me out of my shoe and I stumbled and landed awkwardly on my ankle. It’s been weak and painful ever since. I had to cancel a charity race and Ive had time off work for appointments and X-rays.

Her response was “well I was hungry”. Everyone who saw it happen finds it hilarious. People who didn’t see it finds the description hilarious. I don’t and I’m pissed off. I want her to acknowledge it and acknowledge that it was her fault and apologise rather than it still being treated like a comedy sketch.

OP posts:

Who falls out of their shoes?? I think you need to remeasure and get some more suitable shoes, unless they were flip flops ?

backformoreofthesame · 13/09/2026 19:20

You came out of your shoe? That’s crazy

I can’t see where OP said she was running

She said she came 'flying in', which indicates she was rushing and being careless.

Gingernaut · 13/09/2026 19:18

Was this reported as a H&S incident?

Someone running in and injuring someone so badly that the injured party ended up in hospital is not something to be laughed off lightly

Frombeyond · 13/09/2026 19:13

Hang on. So this woman, opened the door, started running, saw you in the way and barged you out of it?

That doesn’t sound very credible in the workplace, does it.

what is actually wrong with your ankle after your multiple x-rays and appointments?

Gobbledegoo · 13/09/2026 19:07

This is a very serious issue. OP has been injured, quite badly, no ambulance required. HR has been notified albeit not at the time. Doorway is badly designed. It is no laughing matter, and not minor. No one knows the outcome in a few weeks/months/years. Did OP have medical/first aid attention?

All these issues need to be addressed immediately. If I was OP and had experiences I have now, I would contact an appropriate solicitor tomorrow.

I have a friend whose chair was moved out of the way for a "joke". She has serious spine issues and has had multiple operations. The company concerned has said she should have spoken up at the time and it was now a private issue. The person who did the "joke" hasn't the means to pay for all my friend has endured.

Eh, at the end of the day, they both bumped into each other and OP unfortunately got injured in the process. It happens.

She flung the door open and ran in. No apology, just barged me out of the way to get to the fridge

OP literally says she flung the door open, ran in and barged her out of the way - they didn’t both bump into each other.

She should have apologised.
This could happen again, raise as H&S issue to get a glass panel in the door, so starving, barging staff can see if they are about to take someone else out. If she thinks it’s funny she’s not about to alter her behaviour.
Get it reported in the accident book.
Take time off if you can’t work properly
I hope you heal ok and can get back to fitness.

OP is not at fault - no grown adult should be barging through any door like a maniac, especially a busy communal one at work of all places @beaglescurleduplikebagels I find it ridiculous that @Wreckinball wants to put a glass panel in said door so that overgrown badly behaved children like OP’s colleague can check before they barge. And as if they would anyway! 👀

Awful behaviour. YANBU, definitely say something OP. Sorry you have to be the one to teach this person how to behave because her parents clearly didn’t.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 13/09/2026 18:59

She is rude. If I accidentally knocked someone over I would apologise for my stupidity.
Take a personal injury claim against the company. She’ll learn from her rude reaction, so will HR.

shrumps · 13/09/2026 18:55

OMG seriously??

beaglescurleduplikebagels · 13/09/2026 18:53

EdP00 · 13/09/2026 18:47

Not if the other person came flying in and OP was walking sensibly out.

We know not to fling doors open or shut because someone could be coming the other way.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 13/09/2026 18:47

A 'sorry!' at the time would be enough I think. It was just an accident, she didn't deliberately set out to injure you. Accidents happen and they aren't always someone's 'fault', just one of those things. But she ought to have apologised as soon as it happened though - I wonder if she was one of those people who can't say sorry?

EdP00 · 13/09/2026 18:47

beaglescurleduplikebagels · 13/09/2026 18:43

Then OP was just as much at fault as the other person if they were both coming through the door at the same time.

Op didn't say she was knocked to the floor. The fact that everyone who saw it found it funny and laughed implies the OP wasn't seriously hurt. Presumably that's not a reaction everyone would have had if the OP had been badly hurt.
What have HR said about it? presumably you raised the issue with them.

Yes fair enough, I imagined her falling to the floor.

If she fell out of her shoe it must have been very obvious and so I think it was obvious that she was injured and therefore the other person should have apologised.

(As opposed to, her knocking OPs ankle gently and not realising how much it hurt, which is why she didn’t apologise).

beaglescurleduplikebagels · 13/09/2026 18:43

WhereYouLeftIt · 13/09/2026 18:27

She wasn't "stood" at all.

OP "was coming out of the staff room at work and a colleague came flying in". OP was in the process of going through the doorway when someone came through in the opposite direction.

Then OP was just as much at fault as the other person if they were both coming through the door at the same time.

Offherrockingchair · 13/09/2026 17:16

Take a bit of time off work and say it was due to being injured in the workplace. Presumably there’ll be a form to complete and they may start taking it seriously then? She’s very rude not to apologize!

Yes I’d do this. It needs to be documented that you were injured at work regardless

Boreded · 13/09/2026 18:38

So are you saying that the moment of impact, she didn’t say oops sorry…I doubt that very much.

why do you need an apology after the fact.

Backedoffhackedoff · 13/09/2026 18:37

if she wouldn’t apologise at the time she won’t weeks later and what’s the point in forcing her? She won’t mean it.

CakesForAll · 13/09/2026 18:36

For all those asking "How can one be knocked out of shoes?" Have a bit of imagination. Example, OP might have been wearing 2 inch heel backless loafers. Easy to be knocked out of those when some thoughtless oaf barges into you at speed. It's not funny. OP was injured.

Zaza2020 · 13/09/2026 18:36

How rude. Poor you, id be annoyed too.

ginasevern · 13/09/2026 18:33

She flung the door open and barged you out of the way to get to the fridge, citing "I'm hungry". She sounds like a rampaging pig.

WhereYouLeftIt · 13/09/2026 18:27

beaglescurleduplikebagels · 13/09/2026 17:28

Yes, I'm for real.

If OP managed to get herself knocked over by someone rushing through a door, that suggests she was stood in the wrong place. It's common sense 101 not to stand directly behind a closed door.

Like I said, I would have made sure OP was okay.

She wasn't "stood" at all.

OP "was coming out of the staff room at work and a colleague came flying in". OP was in the process of going through the doorway when someone came through in the opposite direction.

Marieb19 · 13/09/2026 18:17

Did she not apologise at all? If not, you could contact the personnel depth, especially as you have had to take time off work. I can't see your boss thinking it's funny if you are taking time off.

ReadingSoManyThreads · 13/09/2026 18:17

YANBU

She sounds appalling.

I'd be raising this with HR, they should at least be putting out a work etiquette email, no running in the workplace, treat others as you'd wish to be treated etc.

Hope you get better soon.
