AIBU to think grapefruit is the perfect fruit?

Grapefruit is the perfect fruit.

  • perfect balance between sweet and sharp
  • can be eaten alone or added to salads
  • just looks nice (especially the pink ones) all jewel like
  • low calorie
  • rich in useful stuff - fibre, vitamins, minerals and antioxidants.

OK - not so great if you are on statins, I will concede that.

AIBU or is grapefruit the bestest fruit ever?

My dsis would have agreed - but anti-rejection drugs made it a no go.

Normal people, as I always pointed out to her, have to sprinkle so much sugar on said fruit to make it palatable that any health benefits are lost.

In short. OP, you are most definitely BU.

i think my nurse said the occasional one was ok
i am going to push the boat out and buy a pink grapefruit today!

DancingLions · 13/09/2026 09:52

I'm also on medication and shouldn't have grapefruit but I do have it sometimes as I really love it. If I feel dehydrated nothing hits the spot like grapefruit.

My doctor told me the whole no grapefruit with certain medications thing was because x amount of years ago (before the advice) some young people died and that was the cause. I can't remember the full details of what he said. But the point was he said the occasional one was fine.

HoraceCope · 13/09/2026 09:49

black coffee and half a grapefruit was the breakfast of choice in the 1970s

they should tinker with these medications so we can eat grapefruit

OttersOnAPlane · 13/09/2026 09:46

So, so many medications exclude grapefruit. Therefore they can't be perfect.

I’m on essential medicine that keeps me alive that I can’t have grapefruit with (or Seville oranges, no marmalade either 😭). Initially, I was on one treatment for a year and I was like, right, I can do this! I used to look longingly at all the grapefruits at the shop. Now I’m on a different medicine and forever. No grapefruit. One day I may get wild and risk it. 😂

No marmalade!!! 😱

Ah, like you OP I LOVE grapefruit; but sadly, like others, medication (for BP) means I can’t have it.

This thread has actually made me sad.

I’m sorry. If I needed medication I would give up grapefruit but I would miss it. 💐

I loathe grapefruit, it really tastes like vomit to me and I don't think I'm a fussy eater particularly.

I eat it tinned. Otherwise it's too much faff. Raspberries are the best fruit. Delicious and minimum faff.

AnniesFrangipani · 13/09/2026 09:40

I’ve often meant to Google why the specific interaction of grapefruit with certain medications but kind of resigned myself to it. I do have a grapefruit body spray though 😊

roseymoira · 13/09/2026 09:34

Oh contraire, I think you’ll find kiwi is the best fruit

Kiwi is delicious

AnniesFrangipani · 13/09/2026 09:37

I miss grapefruit!!! I have to avoid it because of medication.

If I were to chew a mouthful of baby wipes, grapefruit is what I imagine they would taste like. For me its the worst fruit.

MotherofPearl · 13/09/2026 09:29

I like tinned grapefruit. Waitrose do mixed grapefruit segments in juice which I often have as a weekend breakfast treat.

XMissPlacedX · 13/09/2026 09:28

I do like them though

XMissPlacedX · 13/09/2026 09:28

I voted Unreasonable because you need a masters degree in mechanics to open them without either wasting it or cutting yourself.

its so unfair!

Goldensprat · 13/09/2026 09:26

I like it but it's a huge faff compared to bananas, grapes, blueberries, apples, etc. I can hardly ever be bothered with a grapefruit. Prefer fruit you can just pick up and eat.

Londonrach1 · 13/09/2026 09:24

If you've had breast cancer you not allowed to eat it due to its interactions with medication. It's a fruit to eat in moderation. I used to love it but wary now

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 13/09/2026 09:21

I love grapefruit and grapefruit juice but I can't have it because of bloody medication.

Squirrelsnut · 13/09/2026 09:18

Agree, OP. It's gorgeous.

CrowMate · 13/09/2026 09:17

I prefer pomelo, but that has the disadvantage of only being available for a few months a year and also a pig to prepare.
