Why hasn’t Michael Jackson been cancelled??

I’ve been out at a 80s day disco today… loads of fun. But it struck me that people were still delighted by MJ… why? He was a wrong ‘un of the very worst kind. How come he hasn’t been cancelled?!

But Saville was known to be a serial abuser. There are many cases where people have come forward to describe what he did. Nothing proven about MJ. He was definitely weird and had a fixation about childhood but that doesn't automatically mean he was a sexual predator.

Edited to add that I am not saying he is innocent. He may well be guilty.

Edited

Many came forward to describe what MJ did and Savile was never tried in court. People simply choose to believe Savile’s victims but not MJ’s.

If the tide turned and the US launched a full investigation into MJ and asked victims to come forward in confidence - I have no doubt more would do so.

What makes him a sexual predator is the men who say he predated then a children.

HRTQueen · 14/09/2026 14:37

Jimmy Savile was certainly a big celebrity but his influence on pop culture is just not comparable

There is no money to be made from JS

So is Jimmy Saville but none of his old tv programmes are repeated anywhere. They’ve even taken Scott Mills presented Top of the Pops off IPlayer.

Becuase he was not found guilty

Because his talent and influence is not matched by anyone else

Because he is still making millions of $'s for many many people even years after his death and shall continue to do so (this is the real reason, but if he wasn't so talented this would not be the case)

It's not a good look not to do even a cursory google to establish that, yes, there were discrepancies in what they said in that documentary.

You said the judge "sent them packing" numerous times because they "can't get their timeline in order".

When the actual reason was the statute of limitations (where the law in California has since been changed) and whether Jackson's corporations owed a duty to protect. Technical points of law, not credibility.

Glad they are finally getting their trial.

He was abused and exploited from childhood. He was a "weirdo" but the families all took a payoff. If my kid was abused, I'd never take money from the abuser.

He was an easy target and a victim.

@Brokentoes85
Even if your lawyers advised that you were unlikely to
win?
Sexual abuse is notoriously difficult to prove and the statistics are low for bringing those responsible to justice. This would have been an even greater challenge where the perpetrator just happens to be of the richest men in the world.

This hypothetical virtue is entirely notional.

Have you been in that situation? Have you ever had to make a decision that your son really does not want to testify in a high profile sex abuse trial against one of the most famous men in world? Do you know anyone who’s been the complainant in a sex offence court case? It’s horrendous even for adults.

Might it not make sense that as the abuser will get off without jail time - a settlement to pay damages would be an alternative form of justice - and would at least cover your son’s therapy, education and long term need to keep a low profile.

TheFriendlyPotato · 14/09/2026 13:01

I suspect there is a racialised component here. He was idolised as a music god by a whole generation of black african americans, who viewed him as something to aspire to.

It is very hard for people to separate themselves from cultural icons, especially ones who were adored.

Also his whole schtick was compassion, kindness, and healing. He portrayed a wholesome character in the public eye. Plus he grew up in the public eye, making people feel almost like he was family.

Yes he wasnt convicted yet neither was Saville. Saville wasnt adored in the same way. He was often seen as an oddball.

DebbieSavage · 12/09/2026 21:17

Well he was a white heterosexual male celebrity so the rules never applied to him.

Michael Jackson was white? What on earth are you talking about?

silverstorm101 · 14/09/2026 12:47

11AndCounting · 13/09/2026 23:52

I accept the verdict.

And I also believe he was very likely a child abuser.

These are not mutually exclusive concepts, by any stretch.

And that's your opinion which you are absolutely entitled to, but others are entitled to believe he was innocent and still enjoy his music. Which is why he's not 'cancelled' as the OP asked

Call me old fashioned but im a great believer in innocent until proven guilty

Then I hope you never do a role which requires you to safeguard children or vulnerable adults.

Which is fair enough in an isolated incidence of someone being accused of something. In MJ’s case there is an hell of a lot of smoke for there not to be a fire.

As many posts have said,he wasn’t ever found guilty of any crimes. Yes he was odd and probably on the edge of what would be considered acceptable, but not guilty, additionally, his music is pretty good.

A 30-40 year old man having sleepovers, in the same room, in the same bed, with unrelated pre-teen boys isnt, and has never been considered acceptable, or in any way normal, behaviour....
And being talented isnt a get out clause for that.

he was for a while in the early 00

but then was found not guilty so he re-started his career

Right but we wouldn’t let kids watch Jim’ll Fix It though would we?

A lot of people did.

Kids are watching much worse now.

If you just stopped lying to yourself for a second you would realise that abuse victims primarily remember the abuse - not always all of the exact circumstances of where it took place.

That does not mean they are lying.

Exactly.

everyoldsock · 14/09/2026 09:12

It's not a good look not to do even a cursory google to establish that, yes, there were discrepancies in what they said in that documentary.

If you’re referring to the station and the Grand Canyon issue - as that’s literally all there is - I hope you’re not naive enough not to grasp that at that distance memories are fallible. If so and so thought something happend in x when actually it was in y - that does not bely the rest of the testimony. Discrepancies of memory is exactly what is used against victims of sexual abuse and sex offences in court to try to superficially discredit an account.

I doubt any other people put themselves in the MJ's position by building Neverlend and inviting packs of children over.

But there are a LOT of famous musicians that are currently being accused of sex with underage girls, maybe you should google it.

Right, and are you accusing those under age girls of lying for money??

EmeraldShamrock000 · 14/09/2026 09:16

Ladamesansmerci · 13/09/2026 23:22

There are some weird fucking takes on this thread. It's amazing what people will accept just because someone was talented.

Let me put it this way, would you be happy with your young children having a sleepover with a random bloke down the road, just because his house was filled with things children enjoy? Of course you wouldn't.

He's at worst sexually abused children, and at best is a creepy groomer even if it wasn't sexual. Stop defending him.

The parents of these children have a lot to answer for. It was the era of fake ignorance for fame.
The amount of young under age actors who attended adult parties was foul. Adults openly flirting with children in public on game shows, commenting on little girls with a twinkle in their perverted eye.
Sadly it’s not gone, just hidden.

Meadowfinch · 14/09/2026 09:15

SlothTigerMum · 14/09/2026 08:30

Do you say the same about Jimmy Saville?

No but Jimmy Saville never faced a trial.

MJ did, and was found not guilty. A thorough & very expensive legal process concluded that there was no case to answer. Legally there was no stain against his character so there was no reason to veto his music.

I imagine any attempt to do so after that verdict would have prompted legal action by his estate, and rightly so.

Who are you to decide a man was guilty when a well informed, professional court reached the opposite conclusion?

everyoldsock · 14/09/2026 09:12

11AndCounting · 13/09/2026 23:15

The two idiots on the Neverland documentary can’t even get their timeline in order, hence the judge sent them packing on more than one occasion.
False.

Whether you believe in the accusations or not, telling lies to undermine the accusers is not a good look.

It's not a good look not to do even a cursory google to establish that, yes, there were discrepancies in what they said in that documentary.
