Anyone hosted a bowling party for 8-year-olds?

I haven’t hosted but I have been in a lane several times next to these parties. It’s chaos. Overexcited kids, fighting over the bowling balls, multiple parents hanging around so anywhere around 15 people in the small seating area and overspilling into our lane. The average is 10 minutes, per person, per game. It has put me off ever having one, but I bet many love ♡ it. Maybe with less kids?

Could you do a small party bag of things to entertain them between their turns or set up some kind of set of challenges that would keep them entertained between turns eg spot one thing beginning with each letter of thr alphabet etc

I agree with PP that its chaos with lots of waiting, how about just taking 3 other children so they get quicker goes?

Yes don’t do it, it’s such a rip off. Just book two lanes and order food to come to the lanes - cheaper, faster and way more fun.

Does the 2 hours include sitting down for pizza and drinks?

Can you not rent out more lanes for less time? I remember it is kinda boring waiting about. I helped at a 8 yo bowling party a while ago. I just remembered being horrified they had the buffer things down. We never had that when I was a kid, it's cheating! 🤣

8 sounds like a lot for a bowling party, can you cut it down a bit to maybe 5 including your son. Less waiting around/opportunity for mischief. Plus with 8 of them a think a second parent/chaperone would be needed to keep track of all of them.

This. Two hours bowling is too long & the venue know this, they are trying to sell you an overpriced package.

Oh and dont be put off op. Ive done 12 kids bowling (2 lanes) at age 8 and it was fine, we had 1 hour bowling which finished both games, then the food in an area off to the side.

Having bowled with my 7 year old recently, both times she was bored after 30-40 mins, once was just me and her and once there were 4 of us. She definitely wouldn’t have wanted to do 2 hours.

I would definitely have the bumpers down as constantly scoring 0 is demotivating, and also make sure they have the things to roll the ball down - my daughter just does not have the strength to throw the ball, it literally doesn’t make it to the pins. Once we had to get staff over to remove her stray ball 😂

My DC are adults, but I do remember that DS had a bowling party for his eighth birthday, so interested to read that's still the in thing among 8-year-olds! Can't remember how many we had, but they were definitely split between two lanes. I would definitely have at least 3 adults present, one to supervise each lane and a third who is available to leave the lanes if any of the boys run off or if there's any issue with the food order. I remember high levels of excitement! One of the boys had to be stopped from bowling into a neighbouring lane where another group of people were bowling.

I did this several times, with similar age kids 15 odd years ago. I can’t really remember anything about the parties, which suggests that there were no disasters. And the fact that I did it for all my children suggests that it went down well at the time.

I would check with the staff whether the bowling parties generally tend to take the full 2 hours or finish a bit earlier. That way you can gauge what time to ask parents to pick up their DC.

Can you not just DIY? for DS' 7th i had 12 kids across 2 x lanes, we did one game and it was fine (2 games would have been too much). It was in a complex so I had booked a pizza restaurant for afterwards which was cheaper than the package at the lane and nicer pizza!

Our local bowling parties last two hours, but there is an hour of bowling and then an hour in a party room for food/games etc.

I think two hours of bowling is far too long. I would take them bowling and then to McDonalds - I have done that on my own but you may prefer another adult with you.

Just leave early? Make it a 90 minute party? If they don’t complete the second game, ‘oh, that’s a shame’.

I have but ours was one hour and split over two lanes. 2 hours is a long time for an 8 year old.

Did one for DD but older than 8. It worked well and they had that thing so kids dont have to actually bowl the ball. I think 8 is a bit young though.

Yes, 2 hours bowling is definitely too long. Even an hour is too long to bowl. I’ve found they get bored waiting, wander off to the arcades, then you’re waiting to find them when it’s their turn. 🙈 I’d book one game and buy food when you’re there.

I did this for DD's 8th or 9th birthday. Rather than booking an official party we just booked 2 lanes for 1 or 2 games of bowling (can't exactly remember) then gave them all a choice of a main meal and drink food option and brought our own cupcakes. It was several years ago but was a bit quicker and cheaper than an official party.

I haven’t, but I did once stupidly buy a piñata 🪅 for my dd’s 3rd birthday party which went terribly wrong. A bunch of 3 year olds waving around a cricket bat, WTF was I thinking.

Honestly I'd sack off the package. Book two lanes for an hour, get food ordered and brought over. Then when they've finished (assuming there is one) give each child a couple of quid to play in the arcade. If you don't have the package you can work it out as you go along if they are chaotic, bored or really engaged in it.
