To ask what nice things you do for yourself to make moving less stressful?

I’m moving on Friday 25 September. I’m a single woman in my thirties and will largely be dealing with the move by myself.

This isn’t my first time moving, it will actually be my fifth move in just over six years. The joys of renting! So I know the practical side of it reasonably well but familiarity doesn’t necessarily make the packing, admin and disruption any more enjoyable.

I’m excited about the new place and would like to make the move feel like a positive new beginning rather than just something stressful that I have to endure. I’m therefore wondering what nice things other people do for themselves in the lead-up to a move, on moving day itself and during the first few days in the new home.

It could be anything: a particular meal or takeaway, booking something relaxing beforehand, buying something small for the new home, making the first night feel special or simply giving yourself permission not to unpack everything immediately.

I’m not really looking for general packing or moving company advice. I’d specifically love to hear about the little comforts, treats or rituals that have made moving feel easier or more exciting for you.

What do you do for yourself when you move?

Get some really really lovely hand wash and hand lotion! You wash hands soooo much when moving it would be so nice to have a beautiful L’Occitane lavender hand wash and hand cream on standby everywhere.

Definitely permission to stock up on the most indulgent selection of M&S / Waitrose picnic food / ready made salads / sandwiches / fancy cold soft drinks / nibbles / cakes / chocolate.

A local coffee shop once a day for a proper break, a really nice cup of coffee and a brief change of scene before round 2!

You could order a food shop with lovely extras and a couple of ready meals, a flower subscription or buy and wrap yourself a couple of books to put on your bedside table for your new home! Congragulations OP, I wish you much happiness there x

I too moved a lot when i was renting, and i always made myself a 'first day' box - with essentials such as a kettle and tea/coffee stuff, a saucepan a few spoons, bin bag, washing up liquid etc and practical stuff like that. I also always throw in a book i'm reading or want to read, a small lamp, and a scented candle or reed diffuser to make me feel at home in the evening, and buy i always buy everyone new pjs for the first night. I also download some stuff to watch too, as wifi tends to be a few days before it's up and running.

We are moving soon. No ritual as such previously but this time I'm planning to get cleaners in on the day we move to do a deep clean including the oven. I like a clean house and that can take ages. Then we've asked our removal company to not drop anything off the first day and keep everything overnight, we'll take a suitcase with clothes and blow up beds and sleeping bags. Plan is to go out for a pub dinner then sleep on the blow up beds. Then we have a full day to start unpacking etc. the next day.

Nothing, I have just moved again and it was awful. Just get it done as fast as possible 🙂

Nothing. Confused I've never had the time or the inclination to do anything but power on through! I definitely don't unpack everything right away but that's because I am lazy, not because I have given myself "permission" to take a rest.

I think the only ritual I've had on moving is to not even think about cooking that night. Go out/have takeaway depending on energy levels.

We moved a lot before buying. I don’t think there’s a way to make packing up any nicer tbh, but on moving day we would make sure the bed, sofa, tv, kettle and at least enough plates, glasses and cutlery were unpacked by the end of the day.
Day before moving, pop to a shop, buy something nice to drink, bread, milk etc and either put in a cooler or store in someone else’s fridge nearby for the day.

Once you’re in, your bed is set up and sofa is ready, watch something you like, have a nice drink and a takeaway (we always had a curry, no idea why).
And the next day, start with breakfast you like (we always had tea and toast, very boring). Then tackled the kitchen first followed by bathroom, bedroom and picked other rooms based on what we could be bothered to do after that.

Pay someone else to pack and move your stuff for you - total game changer.

Then I would probably go shopping and buy or make something special for your new home and plan a solo housewarming on your first night - bath, mini Prosecco, takeaway etc and nest a bit!

Nothing. I have moved numerous times (late husband in forces) and I want my things moved from the old house to the new house as quickly and efficiently as possible. There has never been time to faff with rituals. Do it when you're settled. It's knackering enough without fitting in treating yourself. And I'm recently widowed, early 60s and moving over 300 miles away.
