Woman in underwear in own home

I'm raging and need to know if I'm blowing this out of proportion. We live in a first floor maisonette, house conversion. We moved in a month and a bit ago and (granted) for two weeks we were without curtains or blinds. Our living room window is at the front of the house and we have a large bay, so the main section of the living area is quite set back from the window.

I have returned from a rare evening out to my husband relaying a conversation he had with the next door neighbour, who knocked on the door. For context we have not met this neighbour yet. Apparently the neighbour said they are having their guttering done at some point next week, and that they will do ours at the same time (lovely, thanks). He then went on to say that last time his contractor was here, he 'saw your partner walking around in her underwear'. This has really bothered me, and more so because my husband said he doesn't see the big deal. My feelings are these:

  1. It was a heatwave
  2. I was in my own home
  3. It would have been huge granny pants akin to shorts and a vest or crop top- you'd see more scantily clad people in the park or at the beach
  4. I wouldn't have been parading in front of the fucking window, but rather just living my life and walking through
  5. My husband frequently walked around in his pants in the heatwave, unsurprisingly this wasn't mentioned
  6. Call me old fashioned, but a gentleman would avert his gaze and crack on with his job?

Overall, why on earth has a contractor passed on this information to our neighbour and why has my neighbour thought it appropriate to then tell my husband? Isn't that weird? That me in my underwear at home is being discussed in a chain of men. Like wtf? If he was trying to be helpful he could have had some tact, and said oh by the way we can see in your windows or something along those lines. I just find it bizzare and inappropriate, and actually quite sexist. Woman in underwear in own home- alert the press. In other news, bikinis allowed on beaches and forks found in kitchen.

Also they are doing the guttering at 'some point next week', so am I to hide out all next week lest I offend with my pjs or whatever I want to wear in my own fucking home?!

You are entitled to do whatever you like and wear whatever you like in your home. And you're absolutely right they'd have said nothing about men in pants.

Tell them to fuck off OP.

HarlanCobenDogshit · 12/09/2026 09:03

I see it as a 'heads up' that you can be seen, incase you thought you couldn't and would have an issue with being seen.

Not 'cover up woman, even in your own home'.

I think you've pulled up your feminist pants too high on this one.

But crack on and enjoy the indignation.

Why is the contractor passing this information onto the neighbours? It’s really nothing to be mentioned, like you say, avert your eyes and get on with the job. The neighbour is probably just mentioning it because she worries you might not want to contractor to see you, particularly given he’s made the point of then telling her. Whatever the case, continue to do what you like in your own home. As someone else said, we’d never make the same kind of issue about a man walking around in boxer shorts!

I totally agree with this. The neighbour was clumsily giving @Alee36 a heads up that, at some point, she might find herself eye to eye with a gutter cleaning man right outside her window. If she would be uncomfortable with them seeing her up close in her underwear, she now knows that it might happen and can try to avoid it if she wants to. I don't think the neighbour needed to actually mention underwear at all but I genuinely think they thought they were being thoughtful.

OtterlyAstounding · 12/09/2026 02:53

YABU. He's likely just mentioning it because he thinks you aren't aware that you're visible, and might be embarrassed to know people can see you? A polite heads up, as a pp said. Probably the contractor felt awkward and didn't want to be accused of perving.

If you're not bothered at being seen, and think it's no big deal, then why are you so angry he mentioned it?

this.

It’s the implication that you should be embarrassed, that your husband should be embarrassed

No, you have inferred that.

He passed on a fact. I think a lot of people would prefer not to be unwittingly seen in their underwear.

Yes, there's quite few huge leaps being done here, just to get at men.

Grammarnut · 12/09/2026 08:55

Alee36 · 11/09/2026 23:51

I feel like if you were that awkward the last thing you'd do would mention it to be honest.

Well, you'd try to find a way to mention it politely, which this comment isn't really. Another poster nailed it with 'btw we can see into your windows' which would alert you. But walking around in your underwear by windows where you can be seen is a bit bizarre - though I doubtless am older than you and thus have what you might consider outdated views on what is appropriate to wear in a room which is open to public gaze (and I used to play strip whist with my late DH). What's wrong with a kaftan - my choice in hot weather? I would find it bizarre to walk about in the house in effectively knickers and a bra top. What if I had to answer the door or my DS or DSS turned up (they have keys)?

Overall, why on earth has a contractor passed on this information to our neighbour

We've recently renovated and our roofer told us that the neighbour 3 doors down was mowing his lawn in the nude. The roofer didn't NEED to tell us this info, but did!

Maybe the neighbour telling your husband was a subtle hint that you shouldn't have waited 2 weeks to buy curtains or maybe to keep your current curtains shut if walking around in underwear? 🤷‍♀️

I think that's a bit different, tbh! 😁

Person walking around their house in their underwear not realising they could be seen through a first floor window is a bit different to knowingly walking around your garden in the nude.

We have two women living next door who sunbathe in their garden in bikinis in the summer - not noteworthy.

If the chap on the other side started mowing his lawn in the nude, you can bet my partner or I would be saying, "You'll never guess what I saw today!"

AnonyMumAuDHD · 12/09/2026 08:52

I think I must be odd, because I wouldn’t walk around in my undies in a house without blinds or nets if, having stood at my windows I can clearly see my neighbours and therefore deduce that they can see into my home. I don’t assume I have privacy unless I am the only property for miles.

That will be why I have blinds, though, so that they can be angled for privacy and still let daylight in.

BillieWiper · 12/09/2026 08:52

That's quite odd. I would decline the contractor and tell the neighbour it's pervy to look at people in their homes in their undies and comment on it. If you happen to see such things you avert your eyes. Not because someone's in a bra, but just because if you are a contractor (or anyone outside of the house) you shouldn't be looking into people's windows.

I've a male neighbour and I've accidentally seen him nude a couple times. The windows across the road are just blatantly facing the other side as it's old style. It's obvious he's simply travelling from bathroom to bedroom to dress, and he's certainly not trying to expose himself. I'd never dream of saying anything. I just look away.

Foolish1984 · 12/09/2026 08:47

@HeddaGarbledYou need to improve your reading comprehension skills as OP quite literally said in her post that she WASN’T ‘parading around in her front of her windows in her underwear’ yet that’s exactly what you’ve just accused her of….! 🫣

Gloriia · 12/09/2026 08:45

'I'd have seen it as a bit of an FYI rather than a complaint or criticism or a 'keep yer missus under control" statement'

Exactly. So many posters take offence at the most innocuous of comments, how difficult their lives must be.

GreyCarpet · 12/09/2026 08:44

Maybe the information was passed on as a bit of a heads up in case the OP didnt realise she could be seen in her underwear?

After all, and as someone has said, you wouldn't expect to be seen through a window on the first floor so it would feel pretty private.

I'd have seen it as a bit of an FYI rather than a complaint or criticism or a 'keep yer missus under control" statement.

Honestly, I'm more than happy to call out dick male behaviour but unless it came with a, "She's not hot so tell her not to do it again," or a, "He said her husband's a lucky bastard," type comment, I really can't see the problem.

I can see why you are annoyed. It’s the implication that you should be embarrassed, that your husband should be embarrassed (because he owns you?)

People pointing out stuff like this are not “being kind”. They are trying to police your behaviour by making you self conscious

Isn’t it more that they were giving OP a heads up in case she didn’t realise how visible she was?

There’s nothing in her posts that indicate she should be embarrassed.

But lots of people would be embarrassed by being seen in their underwear by a contractor. I daresay most women would be unhappy to be accidentally seen like this.

People pointing out stuff like this are usually trying to help others.

RampantIvy · 12/09/2026 08:41

It's amazing how posters are reading different things into the OP's situation. Like most posters I thought it sounded like a heads up that if she want to walk around in her undies while someone is fixing the guttering she needs to be aware that she can be seen.

No it's the implication she might have been unaware that she was visible. He was being helpful.

Who are all these Peeping Tom supporters who voted YABU?

I voted YABU. Not because I'm a "Peeping Tom supporter" but because I'd want to know if I could be seen in my underwear. OP is unreasonable not to consider that this is the motive of everyone involved in the chain.

Sorry, but I think you are. Now you know not to walk around in underwear if anyone is working near the window, or you draw the curtains.

I would be appreciative if someone let me know if, unknown to me, I could be seen from the outside in my underwear. (Like I'm grateful if a random passer by tells me my skirt is tucked up in my knickers)

Yes, this is how I would have interpreted it, as a heads up.

localnotail · 12/09/2026 08:11

Next time I would walk around naked.

Aboiledfrogturnedzombie · 12/09/2026 08:09

Alee36 · 12/09/2026 00:49

Nothing missing from my OP, perhaps tone or intenion missing in my husband's retelling of the conversation but its irrelevant really.

Why would I need informing is my point, and I'm not disputing it's a fact, but rather why is it a fact worth mentioning? A contractor saw me in my underwear. Okay, and? Why on earth are you telling my husband this weeks later, and who gives a shit. I think its odd. If he was trying to be helpful he could have said 'just a heads up, contractors will be here next week in case you might feel overlooked, not 'contractor said your partner was walking around in her underwear'.

It is odd.

If I was doing some work on a house and saw a bloke in his undies, I’d not think any thing of it and it would be forgotten.

If I saw a woman in her undies. Same.

I am a woman.

If I saw someone naked I might mention it as a funny story to a friend. But not to the home owner.

The fact that a male contractor, told a male home owner, who then told the woman’s husband that the male contractor had seen his wife in her underwear is odd. They wouldn’t have said anything if it was a man. For sure.
