3 year old suddenly won’t sleep through, scared of her own shadow

My 3 year old daughter has always been an amazing sleeper. Slept in her own room since 7 months, slept 12 hours a night from 4 months old and up until a few weeks ago, we’d do bath, bed and cuddles with a story then lights off, door closed at 7pm and she’d wake anytime from 7-8am.

Now she’s suddenly scared of monsters, shadows, the dark, going to a room on her own in our home, used to go to wee by herself now won’t go unless I go with her.

We told her Monsters are not real, they are made up for stories (although any books she’s got that have a monster in them is a friendly monster who scares away any worries and similar things like that). She doesn’t watch anything with monsters or the like in.

The problem is, I now have to stay with her whilst she goes to sleep which I don’t mind but then anytime between midnight and 4am she’ll be screaming for me and either come into our room and get into bed or I have to go to hers and I’m knackered. She also stirs her baby brother. If she’s shouting for me as late as 4, she’ll only go back to sleep for 30-40 mins then have me up with her.

She’s now got a nightlight that I leave on but it doesn’t seem to make a difference, she has a lovely room that she’s always loved, a house bed and princess sheets which she chose, big kallax unit with loads of books and her cuddly toys on display etc she’s always loved her room now she keeps saying she doesn’t like it. We are in a new build and only decorated it etc just over a year ago to be lovely, girlie and cosy for her.

I don’t know how to solve this! Help!

She’s getting older and developing an imagination ? My youngest wouldn’t / couldn’t fall asleep alone after be broke his leg and arm in quick succession when he was a toddler. He slept with his sister for a few years before moving properly into his own room. He’s a 6 ft tall rugby player now. He was just scared and young and needed us. Get a double bed for her room and let her know you’re there when she needs you . It won’t be for ever.

We left a single bed mattress beside our bed for ours. If they woke they hopped in there and it was kicked under our bed by day.
older kids used it occasionally. Youngest until 11.

Developmental stage. Probably just her imagination going wild and they begin to realise there's stuff outside of themselves.

Just continue to reassure. Also make sure she has a good snack before bed (bowl of cereal, banana etc) so she's fuelled and ready to rest.

It could even be other kids at nursery saying stuff etc...kids have older siblings that may have seen scarier films/tv shows, or some kids themselves are exposed to things that aren't age appropriate....a simple "my brother saw a film with a ghost under the bed" from a nursery friend, could be enough to play on the mind of a toddler.

It will pass, but it's hard!

(My child had horrendous night terrors at your DDs age, no explanation, just happened)

My eldest had night terrors for a while at about that age. She grew out of it.

@maudelovesharoldwe do leave our bedroom door open and she can open her door and come to ours (next door), we leave the bathroom light on as the hallway ones are so bright, we have down lights. She also doesn’t want her door open in case anyone “creeps in”. I don’t know where this has all come from! We keep reassuring her that our home is safe, no such thing as monsters, mummy and daddy can always hear you if you call out and like I said, we let her choose a night light and I’ve been leaving it on all night for her.

Thanks everyone for sharing. I’ve always gone to her or she’s got into our bed and I’ve cuddled her back to sleep as can’t bear the thought of her being scared and me not comforting her but I also don’t want to make it a habit that she’s in our bed or I’m in her bed. Hopefully she’ll grow out of it 🤞🏻

@maudelovesharoldfunnily enough they do still
what’s the time mr wolf and she loves it! They have changed it to “it’s time to tickle you/tell you a joke/it’s time to tidy up” so it’s a less scary than when I was a kid!

Also, if she’s at nursery, there might be stories with monsters or scary animals or games where they chase to catch each other. Wondering if they still play “What’s the time, Mr. Wolf?’ for example!

It’s probably just a developmental phase where her imagination is becoming more active and she’s becoming more aware of potential ‘dangers’, hence her fear of the dark, monsters etc. I think it’s often common for children of this age to develop worries about various things. All you can do is try to reassure and comfort her. Do you still shut her door? It might help if both her door, and yours are left ajar, with the landing light on?

SabbatWheel · 11/09/2026 23:43

It’s just a phase. DD used to wake up around that age terrified of the ‘grey rabbit in the corner’. She’d not long started nursery. We also had a few night terrors in the summer before starting reception and one or two before Yr7. Dealt with it by a mix of sleeping in our bed and gentle return to beds as needed and appropriate at the timeu.

My kids were always good sleepers until 3 or so. My theory is that they are then old enough to get scared of the dark etc. Particularly with waking during the night and then struggling to go back to sleep. It was a tough phase for sure.

elm26 · 11/09/2026 23:31

No he’s just turned 1 year and this only started happening a few weeks. Sorry I probably shouldn’t have referred to him as a baby, she calls him her “baby brother” so it’s habit! She started nursery in January and loves it, nothing has changed at all. She had 3 separate well done stickers last week for helping tidy up, playing nicely and being kind, she’s loving nursery still.

She doesn’t have an iPad, she only watches Princess Sofia on Disney+, the occasional peppa pig or Holly & Ben. I have to put in a password for anything on the tv to do with apps. I’m truly baffled! Her room is lovely and peaceful, calm, never used as punishment. We’ve only ever had fun in here, cuddles, read books etc.

Did this coincide with the birth of your ds? Or if not, have there been any other major changes in her life - starting nursery or new nursery?

ToKittyornottoKitty · 11/09/2026 23:15

Can you have a sleepover in her room and see if there’s something causing her to wake?
Does she watch an iPad or anything? Maybe she’s seen something that’s scared her?
