Why do we keep electing politicians who don't represent us

To be frank I’m not sure that always going with public opinion ‘in that instance’ is necessarily in the best interests of the country - Brexit one example and to be honest I’m not sure that hanging or other draconian social measures wouldn’t be voted in either, given that a lot of fairly live and let live people are apathetic about voting and yet Brian and Doreen who believe in shooting migrants in the sea , compulsory kids in the army and it’s hanging offence for not watching GB News are outside the polling station at 9.30 am - I think it’s very easy to think public opinion is what you see most of spouted on social media, and what ‘your ‘ circle and family think - the reality can actually be somewhat different -

Recognising we have an ageing population & costs come with that isn’t hating on pensioners. Nor is assisted dying.

If you’ve ever seen somebody suffer horrifically for months, in a way that we wouldn’t let an animal suffer, then you will know why so many of us were in favour of assistance in these cases.

I don’t agree with assisted dying and am feel today’s decision was the right one. I understand that others have different views, feelings on both sides are strong. I don’t know what the general feelings across the U.K. are , we don’t have that information

No. YOU would like palliative care. I don't want palliative care, I want to end my life before I reach that stage.

By turning this bill down, you get to choose. I don't. It's about choice and its now been taken away because people like you are too selfish to consider that not everyone wants what you want.

Also, this should not be about money. This is literally life and death.

But it will not save you from some of the horrific things that can happen in your final months. Things people shouldn’t have to live through, that I would rather not describe on this thread.

Not sure where you're shopping, but BOGOF and 3 for 2 are fairly common Scotland-wide. England and Wales already went live with their versions of these laws, so people have some idea of what will change after the Scottish laws come in October, since they are intentionally harmonised.

And the shelves in England and Wales are still stacked high with cheap junk foods.

You do already get to chose. Its not illegal to take your own life. You could plan a head. Assisted dying is someone taking someone else's life legally. There would be lots of safe guards at first to get it legalised then they'd start changing the criteria. They'd do it to save money on pensions and nhs costs. They'd wipe out dementia care homes.

I thought politicians would be in favour of assisted dying simply because it would save money.

Also - i was for the assisted dying bill. I understand the concerns, but i dont think theyre strong enough to deny someone dignity at their end.

I could easily get 52% of the electorate to vote for free money.

Maybe being governed by the masses isn't a great idea.

Whether or not we trust the people who we choose to protect ourselves from ourselves is another matter.

Sometimes the right thing to do is not the popular thing to do.

Add in nationalisation - more people support nationalisation of transport and utilities than not.

Because Britain is not a democracy, MPs have to worry about their future careers, and so just go with the party narrative dictated by on high, where the country is run to suit London and help the rich get richer.

It is sad but she had the option to go sooner and didn't take it.

Clearly not as important as electoral reform or EU membership

Some of it is due to politicians serving vested interests.

Some of it is politicians learn a lot more about topics than the general public.

I read some MPs switched their vote on assisted dying after doubts were raised about whether it could be made to work safely, not because they opposed on principle?
