To have something sweet/ pudding every day after dinner?
kind of thought the majority did this but after talking to friends maybe not. So for example after dinner every night will have something sweet eg bar of chocolate, biscuits

Yup. This is Mumsnet. So everyone subsists on the standard “MASSIVE SALAD” (it’s a pile of leaves so no shame in having a COMICALLY HUGE portion), single roast chicken for a week and a nibble of dark chocolate once a year when you remember it’s gathering dust in a kitchen cupboard.

LOL. It's always dark chocolate too isn't it? Dark chocolate is horrible. Unless it's flavoured, like a Terry's Chocolate Orange, or a Frys mint bar.

Starter and main every single time!

No. I think people who want starters are quite selfish if the majority at the table don’t. If someone on the table is having a starter then the main course always comes later than if they didn’t. It is different if you order desert because people are not waiting while they are hungry.

I agree. I do occasionally eat chocolate and it is the highest cocoa percentage I can get (85% usually) and one of those squares is enough as it is so strong and rich.

And good in antioxidants.

No, never happens in this household.

As a committed deviant I also drink black Turkish coffee and snack on raw white onions.

Don’t send help, I am beyond it 🫡

I am ok with the coffee and as I am allergic to raw/undercooked onion, we will call it a draw on that as I have no idea if I would like it!

I was with you until pickled cucumbers.

Now I think you are fucked up.

Indeed. Some of us just don’t have a sweet tooth. We’re not denying ourselves treats as some act of self abnegation, because that would mean sweet things are a treat in the first place.

If I had to choose between cake and a jar of pickled cucumbers, it’s the latter every time.

Edited

My grocery has a pickle barrel. They're so good.

I generally don't eat chocolate anymore, just gone right off it but I truly found a square of chocolate was enough for me but maybe that's because I like really dark chocolate and anymore than that is a bit much.

They HAVE to be. 'A square of chocolate.' WTAF? 😂

And some days they go wild and have a whole grape. 😆

Me and DH, literally never. DS will have some yoghurt or fruit.

Why do so many people see avoiding sweet things as pious and martyrdom?

If I eat a starter and a main and someone else a main and a pudding, we have both had two courses but one is seen as "being good!" (had this said to me) and the other not. But why? I dont like sweet things, never have, I would much rather have something savoury.

So why is it viewed differently?

Starter, main, followed by another starter!

This also works!

I think we should form a dining club called "Starters Orders" with @JustMeHello

Moomin37 · 11/09/2026 19:24

I always have a KitKat or Penguin after dinner.

As someone who chronically eats far too little, I probably don't have room to talk, but some of the posts on threads like this from competitively under-eating martyrs are hilarious!
A particular favourite was a post from a woman bemused by the fact that a relative cut peas in half before eating them and regularly served herself egg cup sized portions for dinner. Many of the replies were along the lines of
What a Greedy hog! I am stuffed to bursting after a thimble of food!"
Another classic was a thread about omelets. In response to a commenter who mentioned eating a whole two-egg omelet all to themselves, the reactions to such disgusting gluttony were very amusing, claiming that the posters in question would struggle to finish a whole single egg omelet to themselves!
Aside from leaving me unsure why anyone would even bother getting a frying pan out to make an omelet with one egg, I imagined our toddler's great displeasure if I were to present her with such a paltry dish!

Your grandma sounds the same as my dad dinner wasn't over unless you had pudding 😊 I think it was more to fill you up back then 😊

Yeah I think so, I don't think there was a lot of snacking going on back then and he did quite a physical job. Also it wasn't a typo it was my Granda, which a Scots / Irish way to say Grandfather 😊

Createausername1970 · 11/09/2026 16:48

I am late to the thread, but no, we don't routinely have anything sweet after dinner.

We have been having ice-cream recently but I want to knock it on the head and get back out of the habit. Usually dinner is around 6.30 and that is the last thing I eat until breakfast.

Interesting how it's always fine to mock someone who eats a little bit not a lot.

As I've said, I don't eat sweet stuff every day or very often at all but I do keep some of the mini magnum type ice creams in the freezer.

A box of 6 lasts me all summer and I only ever have one at a time.

I don't really care whether anyone believes it or what other people eat but not everyone has a sweet tooth and not everyone needs to have a lot of something when they do. I'm not resisting temptation or depriving myself because I dont want those other things so I'm never tempted by them.

I also have a jar of walnut halves in the kitchen because I have them with my breakfast. If I ever fancy something else after dinner, I'm more likely to have a few of them than I ever am to want crisps, biscuits or chocolate.

That's interesting because I'm exactly the same.
Never put weight on, I'm the same at 68 as I was at 18. Never dieted, love food but generally eat a big meal in the evening and a pile of ice cream later. Sometimes a muffin as well. Breakfast is coffee, lunch is a salad - leaves with a bit of protein. Loads of water. No snacks during the day and I am starving by 7pm.

I think it's probably because that's how humans are supposed to eat.

Every night without fail. Always been slim as an adult.

But that's it, I don't do crisps, biscuits, snacking or heavy drinks like lattes in the day.

I eat like a snake: massive dinner around 7pm, chocolate or ice cream between 8-9pm, then no breakfast and a light lunch , like crackers and cheese.

I bloody love food and look forward to my evening eating.

I bet my house that they're not. Many people you know who are thinner/slim will eat a dessert after dinner/eat chocolate, they're just not telling you, because they know you're very judgemental.

😂ok. I / we never talk about food tbh, unless we're eating out and choosing from a menu, but if you think I do that's not a problem for me..

PrettyLittleRose · 11/09/2026 14:33

CoventryCity · 11/09/2026 07:49

Of course I don't know what everyone eats, that'd be weird. But the people I do know that do eat pudding / a sweet / a dessert after every main meal, are over weight.
