To have something sweet/ pudding every day after dinner?
kind of thought the majority did this but after talking to friends maybe not. So for example after dinner every night will have something sweet eg bar of chocolate, biscuits

I have a small main course then a bigger pud. In the winter, homemade fruit crumble and custard or sticky toffee pud and ice cream. In the summer fresh fruit and cream or homemade trifle. If I can’t be bothered preparing, then a bag of maltesers hits the spot all year round.

Mince pies this week.

The fuck? It's September!

godmum56 · 10/09/2026 19:30

depends on how I feel.

ConflictofInterest · 10/09/2026 19:28

It's interesting how many people are saying they do and are not overweight. I come from a really slim family where pudding after dinner every day was standard, as well as sliced bread to start. Whereas I am the size of a small hippo as someone put it and I never have pudding, I'd be so embarrassed to order a pudding in a restaurant as a very large person I never have pudding or chocolate or biscuits, yet I remain huge. Perhaps there is something in it. Maybe the pudding eaters have smaller main portions to leave room for a pudding that is not a high calorie as it seems, whereas savoury things are not necessarily lower calorie and I know my main portions are too big. Perhaps I should half my main and start adding in a small pud instead?

KindlySurfiingPlatypus · 10/09/2026 19:28

Yes but I try to keep it really snall if it's just going to be a sugary treat - I love the tiny bite-sized icecream morsels - or if I'm actually still a bit hungry and it's been at least half an hour since dinner I'll have something a bit more satisfying like some dried apricots and a few nuts with a square of chocolate.

Mumlife321 · 10/09/2026 19:27

We always do! Strawberries/grapes, yogurts mainly

suburburban · 10/09/2026 19:27

I always do, sometimes fruit or a biscuit or ice cream

nomas · 10/09/2026 19:27

Would love to if my body didn't gain a pound just from sniffing chocolate.

A handful of strawberries is dessert, sadly. Except at parties, etc.

ZanyMaker · 10/09/2026 19:26

I often have a fun-size kitkat, club or similar was a cup of tea about 8pm. Not directly after dinner though.

PrettyLittleRose · 10/09/2026 19:25

You've asked at the wrong place here @QuickPearlFox Many on Mumsnet are part of the 'I'm stuffed after half a grape' brigade, and the thought of a little bowl of ice cream, or a 2 finger kitkat with a coffee after their evening meal sends them searching furiously for their pearls to clutch.

I think many people have a 'sweet tooth' after a meal, and often will have a bit of something, even if it's a couple of chocolate eclair toffees, or a penguin bar, or a couple of custard cremes. DH and I (after our evening meal) have an ice cream (like on an ice cream stick,) or a yogurt, or a couple of biscuits with a coffee.

'I don't have anything sweet after dinner - and neither does anyone I know' as someone said earlier made me laugh. No-one is telling these 'nothing sweet after a meal' people because they know how judgy they are. 😆Of course some people you know have something sweet after dinner, and it's not a fecking apple! 😆

And the people saying 'I would be so fat if I had a little something sweet' after dinner most evenings - of course you wouldn't, what a silly thing to say! Everything in moderation!!!

.

Parky04 · 10/09/2026 19:25

I do, usually a yoghurt. DH doesn't.

ShakingAndCrying · 10/09/2026 19:25

Candlesniffin · 10/09/2026 18:06

No, I'm fat so can't afford to routinely have pudding :(

I was until this year and never really ate sweet things and didn’t really eat much at all.

I started SW and going to the gym and started eating more and I’ve lost a lot of weight.

I use my SW syns having a few little treats in the day or dessert and I’m eating so much more than before with carbs like pasta, rice and potatoes.
I didn’t expect it to work but it somehow has.

I do a lot more exercise now with the gym and swimming but lost 3.5 stone in the past with SW alone and no exercise. I was younger so it came off much quicker and that’s why I didn’t expect it to work when I was eating so little before.

I think it’s a case of everything in moderation and denying yourself things never seems to work.

seahorsessky · 10/09/2026 19:24

Usually fruit but not always.

Auburngal · 10/09/2026 19:23

I don’t at home. Though may have a yoghurt, fruit, biscuit etc about 1.5 hours after my meal

OnlyYellowRoses · 10/09/2026 19:23

The kids (aged between 17 and 9) always grab themselves a piece of fruit, yoghurt or an ice lolly for their pudding. DH will always have ice cream or some sort of sponge and custard as he’s on a very high calorie diet (fortified) so needs the extra calories daily to maintain a healthy weight. I don’t usually have pudding but when I’m due on, I’ll have a couple of squares of chocolate or fruit and cream. We do tend to eat more puddings in the winter like sticky toffee pudding, apple pies etc as I find it warms them up a bit before bed.

NattyKnitter116 · 10/09/2026 19:23

Used to growing up and until a few years ago but OH diabetic now so we only do pudding if the kids come over. I don’t miss it really as I’m full after dinner anyway and I knit while watching telly so that seems to quiet the noise.

I think if I lived alone I’d probably be overweight and diabetic with high bp and all the heart pills like my mum and sister as I don’t think I’d have the willpower !

Konstantine8364 · 10/09/2026 19:22

Not day to day at home! But if I'm cooking for friends and family then yes, so probably once or twice a week

Wineryvinery · 10/09/2026 19:20

I did growing up - but I did not introduce the habit with my kids. Even on Christmas Day we'll have a pudding available but it's rare that anyone wants to eat it till much later.

junebirthdaygirl · 10/09/2026 19:19

Growing up my Mom made dessert every single day for a large family. Apple tart, bread and butter pudding, rice pudding etc. Every day! None of us were overweight as we had a long bus journey to school and back ,light lunch in school so hungry for our home cooked dinner every evening. Never any chocolate or sweets.
I rarely bake so haven't kept the tradition going but l think if you have healthy meals its OK.

SwanUpmanship · 10/09/2026 19:18

I like a yoghurt after dinner.

TheBlueKoala · 10/09/2026 19:17

AnOldCynic · 10/09/2026 18:27

@QuickPearlFox YABU. It’s a bad habit your parents got you into. I was the same growing up but I rarely have anything sweet after a meal because it’s incredibly bad thing to do.

Wrong. In order to control blood sugar and limit damage to your teeth it's much better to have a dessert rather than a snack.

Reinventedblanket · 10/09/2026 19:16

Yes always. I don't necessarily think these replies are representative. I'm currently trying to ween myself off my daily ice cream habit to something a bit less calorific but still.

jay55 · 10/09/2026 19:16

i do, even if it’s just a couple of haribo.

AlexandraPeppernose · 10/09/2026 19:16

We ever have pudding except when entertaining

JeanSimmons · 10/09/2026 19:16

SlugJam · 10/09/2026 19:08

That’s not to say I never eat anything sweet, it’s just not after dinner! I tend to eat enough for dinner that I don’t want anything afterwards. If I have something sweet it’s usually mid afternoon.

Same here. I'm not an orthorexic teeny tiny, but I find having a rich pudding after a satisfying main too much, so I can't really enjoy the pudding.
