Licking dinner plates

Endlessblueskieswhatsnottolove · 10/09/2026 14:03

Recently my 8 year old has started licking her dinner plate when she's finished. Whilst I appreciate it when she says it's because it was delicious, I've told her not to do it as it's yucky and bad manners.
Dh thinks I'm being harsh on her for getting cross with her

Aibu to not want my child to think it's ok to lick plates after finishing their food?!

Nrtft I can’t be arsed reading absolutely ridiculous fucking middle class entitled comments.

i grew up poor lapping up every inch o gravy, but could never understand the extremes my parents went through until I was older. I’m talking at least 13 aunts and uncles who died from malnutrition. The ones who survived had no shame even if it meant taking food out of a bin to feed their children, including me! Lapping up every inch of Garvey with bread is a luxury. To this day I still use my finger to wipe food up.

im not the one who should ever be ashamed.

Yes, what exactly is the issue with doing this in your own home?

Because she’s likely to do it elsewhere too

I suggest you put a stop to this NOW - it is utterly disgusting. Is this what your 'DH' grew up with?

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Voneska · 10/09/2026 21:39

If you dont teach her table manners then she will not be able to go to any formal Dinner occasion and she will be secretly laughed at. My daughter Licked her knife , despite my protests !!!!!!!!

Ireallywantadoughnut36 · 10/09/2026 21:25

This would fall under the behaviours I tell the kids are "not for public consumption"
-swearing
-nose picking
-bum scratching
-farts and burps
Etc
The things people sometimes do in private, that are objectively gross and they'd never dream of doing in front of anyone else. I reckon plate licking is the same. If she can understand that it's something she only does at home, with nobody outside the family in the house and nobody else can see, it wouldn't bother me. Depends whether she can truly understand that, because it absolutely cannot happen in public! Tbh, I was home alone the other week with a sticky toffee pudding and had a quick lick before I popped the bowl in the dishwasher - I'd never ever let anyone see though!!!!

spaghettiandicecream · 10/09/2026 21:10

If she understands this is bad manners but she can do it at home for her favourite meal I don’t see what the problem is. You don’t want her doing it at every meal or when she’s out. Knowing how to behave correctly is important.

Jiski · 10/09/2026 20:41

Are you giving her enough dinner or something that is filling? I used to do this because I was still hungry.

Oh I dip bread in soup-lovely!

I draw the line at licking plates though!

Give her a little piece of bread to mop up instead. I was brought up in France and it was standard to use bread for this at the end of school lunches.

lebin · 10/09/2026 19:26

I wouldn’t like it either. My parents were always very firm on table manners - I couldn’t lick a knife let alone a plate! Would put my teeth on edge watching someone do this 😂

Endlessblueskieswhatsnottolove · 10/09/2026 14:14

Are you serious?

Unlikely. A lot of people post utter bullshit online because their craving for attention isn’t met IRL

Teaching children manners and social skills is good parenting. When should someone learn that licking their plate is socially unacceptable, when they are a child at home or at their first meal with clients? Can you imagine that😳

Giving her bread to wipe the plate with isn’t much better unless she is going to have bread with every meal forever more.

Is licking the bowl icky? Is another childhood pleasure gone? Sad

Yes I know, the question is about doing it in front of other people. But as always, you can play Mumsnet bingo with this thread.
Grim - tick.
Ick - tick.
Only “crass” is missing. Sad

It's so crass 😜 Just kidding. I'm a plate licker, I don't necessarily want bread. I live on my own though and never do it in front of anyone.

HairyBanana · 10/09/2026 19:02

In early days of our relationship, when we were students, future DH and I used to go to my parents house, where my mum would cook an amazing tea. Future DH would be effusive in his compliments to my mum about the food, but whenever she turned her back he'd pick up the plate and lick it then "shhh" to my little brother who'd laugh his head off. We all know it's rude, and we all know it's a sign the food was good. My BF loving my mum's food that much, and knowing good manners, and knowing how to make my brother laugh, were all things I liked about him.

Mrspatmoresapprentice · 10/09/2026 18:59

Absolutely not. As a parent, you need to teach children what is acceptable and what isn’t. Plate licking isn’t. Imagine if she went on a play date at a friends house and did this? Or in a restaurant? Or on a first date when she’s older? No. Basic manners should be taught to all children.

Skihound · 10/09/2026 18:53

My kids lick plates before dinner to reserve a certain plate - they only do it at home and it's to annoy each other I'm praying they grow out of it.

RaininSummer · 10/09/2026 18:49

Bez72 · 10/09/2026 14:06

Can't see any problem with it myself!
Why shouldn't she?
If you really have a problem with it, give her a bit of bread to wipe her plate with, or is that wrong too?

That is an unexpected answer. Let's hope the children don't do it in public.

2Rebecca · 10/09/2026 18:47

Dipping bread in soup or in sauce is fine as is using your hands when eating chapattis or naan breads. Bringing a bowl up to your face or bending your face down to your bowl to lick it is not though.

Endlessblueskieswhatsnottolove · 10/09/2026 14:14

Are you serious?

Wouldn't bother me either as long as it was not in a pub/restaurant.

EmmaB1309 · 10/09/2026 18:42

Meh I couldn’t get too worked up about this. She’s old enough to know that it’s ok to do it at home with her own household but maybe not in public or if you have company over. But if it’s not acceptable to you it’s fine to tell her you appreciate she liked the meal but it’s not good manners.
Personally, I wish my 11 year old dd ate with such gusto! She eats like a sparrow and is so picky.

IdaGlossop · 10/09/2026 18:35

When we were students, a close friend had a boyfriend I couldn't abide. He couldn't abide me either. One day, we went to eat in a greasy spoon, the three of us. When he had finished eating, he put his knife and fork on the table, picked his plate up and licked it. He thought his behaviour confirmed his proletarian credentials (he had been brought up in a family of teachers and classical musicians in the Home Counties).

For me, it confirmed his credentials as a absolute tosser. That is the only time I have seen anyone lick their plate. It's an image that has stayed with me for nearly half a century. No, children, we do not lick our plate clean at the table.

DaffodilsPlease · 10/09/2026 18:01

My husband does this! Its a turn off and not good table manners. I would try to gently stear away from this

LlynTegid · 10/09/2026 17:53

Just no.

I am with you on this one, OP.

There is a young female who is an exception to this though.

It’s rude and I’d never do it in public or in front of other people but I would do it on my own in the kitchen. I’d tell my children to do the same.

“Mopping up” with bread sounds just as disgusting as licking the plate looks IMO.

Mopping up with bread is actually good manners in France. When manners get too pernickety, like not allowing bread, pushing your soup spoon away from you or passing the port the right way, it's just a way of dividing us and them. Which you may be happy with but I'm not.

Licking the plate - no but I wouldn't get cross. Mopping up with bread - absolutely fine.

Some people on here with a very low bar in regard to manners.
