AIBU to think my friend is overdoing emergency stockpiling?

Didn’t say I was unreachable did I? But the numerous towns and city’s in between would be hit hardest first. And yes there are very very rural places in the uk.

Actually the opposite is true. There’s been very little about the Houthis having effectively cut off the Saudi oil lines. It’s disastrous. The oil and fertilisers that were filtering through are no longer coming through. The upshot is likely to be serious food shortages and a shortage of power in Europe/uk in particular.

This is a catch up campaign, we are WAY behind our European counterparts in being prepared for an emergency, whatever that emergency may be. And of course emergencies happen. Not a new thing!

Our government quite rightly is trying to catch up. I’ve followed the advice for at least 72 hours supplies for many years. It’s just sensible.

Got to wonder why the media are trying to scare us all the time. It’s becoming tedious.

I understand some people don't follow the news, because it's so doom laden and anxiety provoking.
However, I find knowing what is going on, at least to a superficial level, is empowering.
I don't trust any government or their motivations and hidden agendas, so knowing the most likely scenarios you can insure against gives peace of mind.
I'm also under no illusions that there is little point preparing for a catastrophic event ( nukes, bio war etc) unless you are extremely well placed, rich, and physically fit.

Much easier having someone else do the job for you. Lazy.

@Happyasapiginmuck1very briefly it's govt advice to stock for a few days to prepare for power cuts, water being cut off, supply issues, floods etc in case they happen. Its to increase the UK's resilience with factors such as el nino, conflicts, and problems with supply routes.
No big deal, just a few days tinned food, water etc.

Well your choice to make the effort to inform yourself. Or not.
Incidentally you're not the first to ask this question on the thread and it's been answered a number of times. Maybe people patiently giving the same answers over and over again are, I dunno, a tad fed up with people who just can't be bothered to inform themselves?

After page 1 gave nothing away I gave up. I rarely watch the news, no TV licence so nothing live on the TV and haven't heard anything on radio 4 news. My social media feed hasn't picked up the reasons either. But thanks for your reply. 🙄

The Swiss government mandates each household has certain levels of stocks. They also get companies like Nestle and others to hold 3 months worth of inventory of items on their essentials list.

We've cleared our summer crops now, lettuces, toms etc and we're turning it over for carrots, potatoes etc

You can regrow some things just on your window sill, like the root ends of a bunch of spring onions from the supermarket in a glass of water..not much but it will keep growing.

All priced at Tesco this evening but most of those prices are the same at Aldi and Lidl at least.

You don't have to store for months but having a few extras might be helpful.

I'm also planning to change my flower garden into more of a cottage garden, growing produce amongst the flowers. I've tried proper vegetable gardening and it's been quite the failure, but anyone who has a garden can get some things to produce, like courgettes, beans, kale and chard.
In my mind it's not worth the effort and space to edible results equation to try with things like cauliflower, sweetcorn and peas!

I never have enough for 1 week let alone food put by for months 😳 My salary won't stretch that far..

I guess it makes sense in my mind that rather than having long term preps, I want to be ready for the whole story in a short term glitch, within reason.
I think about what it would be dangerous to be without, then what it would be miserable to be without - and then think of the steps to provide that resilience.
I remember being without water once for several days, and the realisation that in order to collect from the bowser a couple of miles away, we had to drive up the track we lived on and had no suitable large containers with lids to fetch the water. Its not something you think of till you need it!
We've always kept an old style phone to plug into the socket if needed ( when I was pregnant I was worried I couldn't call anywhere for help and we had frequent long powercuts) I hear now though these old phones won't work any more? If so, what a stupid short sighted situation to have got into!
