To think that Burnham’s words are going to haunt his premiership?

‘…national security can’t come at the expense of social security…’

They could go for broke (no pun intended), they’re not going to win any future election again for a very long time. Let’s hope Andy doesn’t call one early or else we will have yet another PM.

And what numpty are they going to put forward if that happens?
They are running out of suitable candidates.

And commit electoral suicide at the same time.

It would be a pointless exercise of self harm unless all the over borrowed economies, particularly the USA, do the same.

But Labour are in power. They could do that, in the uk anyway.

Austerity like you've never seen before. Either imposed to stop financial Armageddon, or caused by it.

Will Labour be doing that?

That really was a spiteful tax.

Bitter Bridget all over. She was allegedly hurt bad by a posh boy at Oxford.. And don’t we know it..

She is such a liar talking about growing up in ‘poverty’. Bull shit. She had a house heating lighting food clothes education at a very good single sex school. Not like any poverty I’ve seen around the world.

Anyway..

Where has the private school vat gone? Where are the thousands of new teachers. ‘To improve state schools’? Is the soggy white toast helping things?
it’s a mystery!

but thank god we don’t have to hear Starmer’s voice, or reeves’ voice ever again. I nearly vomited if I heard them.

She actually called for us and other countries to reduce our debt.

At the moment none of those countries can even balance their books. Every month we all borrow more just to cover our outgoings that month. You can't reduce debt until you get rid of that monthly deficit and turn it into a surplus.

The USA goes through a farce every six months of having the Senate debate whether they are going to extend the debt. They even sometimes stop paying government employees until they agree to extend it. It's a farce because they can't not. If they don't, the world's reserve currency collapses.

It's completely unsustainable.

The head of the IMF was on the TV news this morning warning lots of indebted countries, including the UK to get a grip on their debt in view of the inevitable forthcoming increases in interest rates. Prepare for a bumpy ride, folks, as Labour don't have a clue how to grow the economy nor reduce the humingous debt.

It’s not at all in line with the manifesto anyway. It was meant to be fully funded and fully costed. Apparently.

You're right of course. The reality is the manifesto was never going to represent what Labour were actually going to do. They have had to raise loads of taxes when the manifesto and all their statements before the election implied this wouldn't happen. Even more astonishingly, they completely failed to mention that they would be implementing changes like removing the two child benefit cap. Why wouldn't they have explicitly stated that they intended to do this when it's obvious that there was a huge appetite for this in the party and there was probably an intention to do this all along? Because they knew it was and remains unpopular. This shows you the level of deception associated with the manifesto.

Ah yes when Reeves promised 'we will not increase National Insurance' and subsequently hit employers with a massive increase. Even the IFS has stated that this clearly broke a manifesto promise, no matter how much Labour try and pretend that they actually just meant employee NI.

None of these tax rises are sensible or promote growth. They have unnecessarily bound themselves to not increase the major taxes so are stuck increasing smaller taxes and doing untold damage to the economy.

Also the whole ethos of prioritising social security over national security is incredibly complacent. Had history not taught us anything! The Roman Empire lasted 500 years and ultimately ended. The idea that life as we know it and the current world order will be the same forever is incredibly naive. At some point the unthinkable will happen and we will need to defend our country. This will be very hard to do when so many people seem unable to cope with a job, let alone the death and destruction that comes with war.

If there is one thing I have learned it is that human beings are incredibly resiliant and adaptable when the worst happens.

The current dependence of welfare doesn't speak of this adaptability or resilience. If it's engrained in humans to rise to the challenge then maybe we are making things to easy for people?

Painful, isn’t it?

Meanwhile, who remembers these bangers?

"All of our plans are fully funded and fully costed. There are no additional tax rises in our plans."

"We will not raise tax on working people."

"We have no plans to increase capital gains tax... We have no plans to increase individual tax rates beyond what is set out in our manifesto."

Bloody liars.

Of course the Tories are well known for always being completely truthful! 🙄

I'm sure you would (though i think its a stretch to say 'we all' as i doubt there are many on the thread that interested in me). You want to know because you want to divert attention from the points I made by making it personal and hope to discredit me.
I explained you can't have both low wages and a low welfare bill. Do you have any comment on that?

Since you have just accused me of fomenting a personal attack on you I decline to answer and will not be engaging with you any further.

HurryUpMrPostman · 23/09/2026 12:10

Presumably if they raise taxes in the budget and don't cut spending the markets will hike our rate to borrow to reflect this.

How high can the rate go I wonder before they decide to stop lending to us?

Even if the rate only goes up a little bit more, what happens when all the existing debt which is at very low rate needs to be repaid or refinanced. Refinancing will be at current rates which are much higher. Thus our interest bill jumps significantly and so the downward spiral continues.

I'm honestly starting to think nobody in government realises this.

Meanwhile the boats keep arriving.....and what little police we have seem to be used on this.

I am feeling very uneasy with everything going on just now - the upcoming budget and all the world wide tension.

I think I have concluded that the sooner the markets stop lending to us the better. That will force the country to start fixing the whole mess. Until then we are just digging a bigger and bigger hole. I will start working on a banner now 'IMF help Now'

The only upside is if we are officially bankrupt and under the control of the IMF the small boats/immigrants will stop coming (well I hope they will at least)

My house is a complete state with bottled water, tinned food, powerbanks and radios and other stuff for the 'end of the world'. What fun trying to guess which version of 'the end' is coming.
