AIBU to expect air freshener in toilets when visiting friends?

Those things give me an almost instant headache. YABU.

I've never bought air freshener for anywhere in the house tbh. I wouldn't expect it in a friend's toilet, although I wouldn't be horrified by it either.

But in general, Mumsnet HATES air fresheners (and fabric conditioner) so your vote is definitely not going to go the way you expected!

Light a candle. If we have friends over I light a big candle in the loo.

YABU. I don't keep air freshener in my toilet for a few reasons. Firstly, spraying air freshener in my loo makes the floor tiles a slipping hazard. Secondly, it doesn't actually get rid of the poo smell, instead it intermingles and becomes a disgusting jasmine-poo cocktail. Thirdly, we just open the window.

Are you saying people with asthma should have air fresheners in their homes for guests to use and just ignore the risks to their own health?

I suffer from migraines and spray air fresheners are a nightmare for me so I wouldn't have them. I find bathroom smells dissipate pretty quickly whereas air freshener stink lingers on for ages so I really don't see the appeal.

I use basic gel air fresheners for a pleasant scent. A quite "earthy" lavender seems to smell better than artificially sweet versions.

The window can be opened and standard cleaning items are next to the loo.

I have a press under the sink with toilet cleaner that could be used to mask a smell I suppose.
In friends homes I would poop, flush and then wipe and flush again. It only smells if it’s left hanging around too long.

Oh no, I hate all that. I’ve never bought an air freshener in my life. Nor those plastic or jelly things that people stick in their toilets. I don’t like synthetic scents and I think they’re bad for the environment, plus often involving plastic packaging which I try to avoid. I hate fabric conditioner, perfume and body spray too. I would just open the window if I was worried about something like that.

I have asthma, I don't like air fresheners. When I go to local John Lewis the entrance is a third of a shop floor of cosmetics and scent. I try not to breathe in through my nose 😳

Ditto. Cant stand a toilet brush. Uurrggghh. Bleach all the way.

I have one in our bathroom but we don't use it ourselves, it's purely for guests if they do get caught out and don't want to be embarrassed.

Edit to add that all my friends and family have them in the bathroom too!

In each of my bathrooms, I have little baskets on the windowsills. In the baskets I have 3 loo rolls, flushable wipes, poo-pouri (spray in the loo before you poop to trap the smell) and air freshener.
All set up neatly!

Weird thing to say. But - air fresheners amplify it to me, the fake flowery smell mixed with the poo smell is stronger and usually you can then smell the whole concoction outside the bathroom 🤢

I detest air fresheners with a passion. They cause a burning sensation up my nose and headaches if exposed to them for longer periods. I had to unplug one at work and hide it in a drawer. Then the fuckers put in those awful ones that squirt out the synthetic chemical crap every X amount of minutes in the toilets that had no windows. I ended up leaving as I struggled to breathe in the toilets, not the sole reason, but still a reason.

We keep our bathroom windows open all day, the smell is gone within 2 minutes of flushing, and if your toilet doesn't have a window, it should have an extractor fan.

It may be that stuff that does a film on the surface of the water? Something like that. No idea if works tho!

I have a cat, no air fresheners here. There's really bad for animal health, really bad.

Years ago I babysat next doors dog for a week when they got let down last mo for a sitter, I felt so sorry for that dog though. Plug in air freshener in every room. I turned them all off, bloomin stank, was choking me and far worse than the smell of a dog.

Don't think I've ever bought an air freshener in my life. Never occurred to me. I think that kind of thing is a waste of money and not very eco friendly or healthy.
