AIBU to expect air freshener in toilets when visiting friends?

Is there an expectation that people's toilets should have an air freshener in? Like a spray air freshener?

We always have air freshener in both our toilets in case friends or family get caught short when visiting us or even to freshen the bathroom after having a wee if necessary, so I hate it if I go to a friend/family members house and they have none.

I get some people may be affected by asthma but surely if you had asthma you wouldn't use it?

We have a glade air freshener at work that sprays into the space where the wash handbasins are for example.

Yanbu tbh

Theres this tiktokker who i love and think is amazing, but she refuses to have a toilet brush! I'm like, what if someone (usually a man) has no choice but to poop in your toilet and finds he cant clean it?! 😩😩😩

Toilet brushes are extremely unhygienic.

I am anaphylactic allergic to some synthetic fragrances and mildly allergic to others. We don’t allow fragrance products in our home.

Spraying them in public is antisocial and dangerous. They do not belong in the workplace.

watchingthishtread · 10/09/2026 01:38

Air fresheners smell worse than what they're masking and they just draw attention to the problem.

Autumnallaround · 10/09/2026 01:34

I worked in a woolworths in the 90s where several of the customers reeked.

I would have chosen the reek over the smell of the air freshener that the manager used to use after they left.

Air freshener is an abomination. As are those electric diffusers. And plug in air freshener. And scented candles in a lot of cases. We simply open a window.

Are you in advertising? 😂

"The final word in masking turd"

"If your Eartha is a stencher, treat your nose to a scent adventure"

"When you've gotta drop an otter, be a sweetie, not a rotter"

We're on holiday at the moment and stopping in a large caravan with two loos, and not having anyone visit. But we have an air freshener in each toilet that we brought from home. I hate toilet smells.

For those that say their shit doesn't smell, are you serious??? Of course it does! 😅

Edited

It shouldn't linger that long after being flushed. Maybe if you have a stomach bug or something, but generally speaking it is gone fairly quickly, especially if you open the window.

I find the smell of air freshener like a descant over the top of a base note of stink quite stomach-churning. It doesn't disguise it, just forms a kind of chorus.

I don't mind a room scent or diffuser like the Diptique or Jo Malone ones, but those are for scenting neutral rooms and I don't think they are intended to meld with fecal notes.

You sometimes smell people on the tube who smell of sweat or body odour, then they have this sickly whiff of scent layered over it, clearly intending to disguise the underlying pong - and it doesn't work!

What's a press?

A press is a cupboard in Ireland!

Some people love the smell of their own poo it seems.

Some people don't want a coughing fit! Lighting a match can help.

Calendulaaria · 10/09/2026 01:11

Those Glade spray things give me migraine that can last for days. Chemical perfumes are dangerous for some.

DrFoxtrot · 10/09/2026 01:10

Agree with PP - air freshener is not masking any smell of shit. It’s much worse smelling floral or fruity spray mingled with shit 😂.

At my work, someone has left a bottle of fake Baccarat Rouge (which I can’t stand anyway) in the toilet so now we have toilet smells enhanced by cheap perfume. Grim.

BrokenWingsCantFly · 10/09/2026 01:10

They never get rid of the smell, only add Synthetic sickly smell on top 🤢

When I lived at home there was a tiny WC with the only toilet, the air freshener would be sprayed after every poo the family had and I could always smell both, so the smell of air freshener makes me feel sick. Poo time here involves bleach poured around the pan after and the window left open

Whoops75 · 09/09/2026 23:37

I have a press under the sink with toilet cleaner that could be used to mask a smell I suppose.
In friends homes I would poop, flush and then wipe and flush again. It only smells if it’s left hanging around too long.

What's a press?

things to try to mask shit smells with a layer of a synethetic smell seem an odd thing to give a shit about

This. Crack a window and let it waft out. Spraying air freshener just means you create a funk of perfumed poo.

JoyousWriter · 10/09/2026 01:03

I can't stand synthetic air freshener smells.

TeaAndTattoos · 10/09/2026 00:55

YABU not everyone likes air freshener I don’t like the spray ones they make me cough I have a Febreze toilet freshener in my bathroom. You’re complaining about people not having air fresheners in their bathrooms but then turn round and say “I get some people may be affected by asthma but surely if you had asthma you wouldn't use it?” 2 things firstly that’s not a question so no need for the question mark and secondly what is that even suppose to mean that makes no sense.

Drivingmissrangey · 10/09/2026 00:53

Nothing says you’ve just done a massive dump like a spray of air freshener.

ThisAutumnTown · 10/09/2026 00:15

I never said I use it after a wee Hmm

The OP said she used it after a wee. That’s what I was referring to in the second part of my post.

Artefact23 · 10/09/2026 00:48

The best air freshener is an open window.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 09/09/2026 23:15

No, I don't want a load of synthetic headache-inducing horrible smelling chemicals in my house. I'll take my chance with the poo 💩

Same. They all smell god awful and are so bad for you and for the environment. Just total toxic pointless poison.

Anonyanonay · 10/09/2026 00:39

Spraying Glade around the bathroom just advertises that you've been for a poo in someone else's house. Yuck.

I'm confident that my shit smells nicer than your Glade spray.

Yes, but 99.9% of air fresheners actually smell worse than poo, so you are just disguising one bad smell with another bad smell which is pointless.

Also, they are really bad for you, and especially so in an enclosed space, whereas poo smell is not actually toxic to the body when breathed in.

Needless to say we don’t have them.

ArtieChoke · 10/09/2026 00:29

^I get some people may be affected by asthma but surely if you had asthma you wouldn't use it?*

why would I put something int he bathroom that can't be used? It doesn't matter who sprays the tin

It may be that stuff that does a film on the surface of the water? Something like that. No idea if works tho!

Definitely works.

VenusThighTrap · 10/09/2026 00:25

Happyjoe · 09/09/2026 23:49

So you use a brush - how do you clean the brush? How do you clean the bacteria in the loo? How do you stop dribbling bits of poopy water all over the seat while you put the brush part back in it's container?

This sounds a bit paranoid, why so much bleach - are you touching the inside of the bowl?

Whatever you do, don't read those stories explaining how there's way more bacteria on smartphones than there is on the toilet!
