AIBU to expect air freshener in toilets when visiting friends?

Is there an expectation that people's toilets should have an air freshener in? Like a spray air freshener?

We always have air freshener in both our toilets in case friends or family get caught short when visiting us or even to freshen the bathroom after having a wee if necessary, so I hate it if I go to a friend/family members house and they have none.

I get some people may be affected by asthma but surely if you had asthma you wouldn't use it?

We have a glade air freshener at work that sprays into the space where the wash handbasins are for example.

I rarely need to poo that bad I can’t wait for an hour or 2 if I’m at someone’s house. How embarrassing and gross to have to do a smelly shit when a dinner guest.

The delights of IBS. I couldn't wait.

carry a box of matches with you and if you have used someone's loo, light a match afterwards and let it burn , it will eliminate smells better than air freshener

Even more efficient, just curl it straight into a metal bucket and then light it and kill it with fire at the source.

Boomer55 · 10/09/2026 09:13

Air fresheners and a toilet brush are always in my bathroom. 👍

BlackRowan · 10/09/2026 09:13

I personally don’t want to smell anyone’s shit including my family members. People who think a reed diffuser, a candle or an open window deal with the smell are delusional. Yes they do, EVENTUALLY. For someone who walks into a toilet shortly after you and has to deal with the smell - ewww.

there are a variety of air sprays and not all of them are aerosol based.

Aabbaas · 10/09/2026 09:11

I hate the smell of air fresheners, they all give me headache. Yes, YABU. Use them in your bathroom if you like but you can’t expect this to be the standard in everyone else’s home!!!

I really dislike the smell of air fresheners. We have windows in our bathroom so I tend to leave the transom one slightly ajar. In the downstairs loo where there is no window, there is an extractor fan. I also have Aesop poo drops by the side of the toilet and these work well.

I wonder how Aesop would have felt if he'd known that, some 2,500 years after his death, he would still be remembered both for his magnificently-crafted fables intended to communicate wise moral truths to humankind through the ages... and also latterly for an association with bottles of floral perfume designed to change the stench of shit into a stench of tangerine, ylang ylang and shit?!

Generally, when you visit people, you use their downstairs toilet. Hell would freeze over before I did a poo in someone's toilet that opened into a hallway area. Since menopause I have to make sure I poop before leaving the house in the morning. If I don't my body will decide ,in the afternoon , that it is going and it is going NOW.

You do know that plenty of people only have 1 bathroom right? Id say its a 50/50 split with my friends and family. And of the 50% who only have 1 bathroom, most of them are downstairs.

The only thing that will freshen air is changing the air in the room, not blasting a load of Diamond Orchid into it. It's like a teenager spraying Lynx on when the reek of BO. They now smell of BO and Lynx, which is arguably worse.

Open the window, close the door behind you. Matches work remarkably well if you want something to cover it. Also, if you flush as soon as it hits the water it's gone and there nothing to smell.

People who are into air freshener - is it because, even though it doesn’t actually cover up the smell, at least it shows you care about leaving a smell and have tried to do something about it?

This thread reminds me of being shown a flat with one toilet, no window, directly opposite the front door. I couldn’t live there.

Imagine the doorbell goes just as you're finishing off, having done your worst in there... the toilet door would fan the pong cloud out to just behind the front door, lurking in wait; then your poor unsuspecting visitor would get a faceful to greet them and would probably wilt right there on your doorstep!!

We're on holiday at the moment and stopping in a large caravan with two loos, and not having anyone visit. But we have an air freshener in each toilet that we brought from home. I hate toilet smells.

For those that say their shit doesn't smell, are you serious??? Of course it does! 😅

Congrats

Enjoy your holiday

MajorSamanthaCarter · 10/09/2026 08:50

If your wee smells so bad you have to spray air freshener then please see a doctor, it can be a sign your kidneys aren't working properly.

Frequency · 10/09/2026 08:50

Anarchy99 · 10/09/2026 08:20

Presumably all those people who are horrified by air freshener think their shit doesn’t stink 🤣

Or they only shit in their own homes even if they go away for days!

No, I just value being able to breathe and staying alive above avoiding a couple of seconds being exposed to a mildly offensive smell.

An allergic reaction for me could be as mild as just causing a bit of irritation and a cough or it could kill me, depending on how well I'm feeling in general and how many other triggers I've been exposed to that day.

If it's summer and I've spent all day in a dusty office, around cat or rodent owners while being exposed to grass pollen and strong perfumes and deodorants (just shower and use a roll on before you leave the ffs) and I have a mild cold and then I'm exposed to a cloud of air freshener on top of that, I'm at least going to need a prescription strength anti histamine and a strong dose of steroids.

If rather be exposed to a few seconds of a bad smell than spending hours in AandEbwaiting for a nebulizer and dose of steroids whilst wanting to tear my own skin off and not being able to breathe.

Ginmonkeyagain · 10/09/2026 08:50

So many people strangely hung up on natural bodily functions, everyone shits and everyone's shit smells. Just open a window in the room afterwards.

We have a couple of cook's candles tah are lit of there is a particularly.persisten or bad smell but if you air and clean your house regularly there is no need for air fresheners or diffusers.

Incidentally this is why I would never buy a property with a windowless toilet or bathroom.

Americasfavouritefightingfrenchman · 10/09/2026 08:48

I’ve never had them. Poo doesn’t smell nice but it doesn’t give me migraines so it’s definitely the lesser of two evils. I think a lot of people really struggle with the artificial scent in air fresheners so would prefer not to have them in their houses

IsThistheMiddleofNowhere · 10/09/2026 08:44

We don't. It's never even crossed my mind. We have been known to come out of the loo and say "I wouldn't go in there for a few minutes if I were you" but anyone that comes to our house, we know well enough to make a joke of it.

Please could you repost this without being rude about boomers? Hmm

I can't bear air freshener! I use aerosols as little as possible anyway - not because of their impact on the environment but because I can't bear the stink. Until a couple of years ago I used reed diffusers, but then I had chemo and got really sensitive to smells so had to stop using them. The nearest I had ever come to using an air freshener is a neutradol gel freshener. It's much less highly scented than the others - it doesn't try to mask smells, it just makes them slightly less obnoxious. I am a great believer in an open window, or an extractor fan if it's too cold to leave the window open.

AlwaysExtraHot · 10/09/2026 08:39

I have a nice essential oils one. No nasty chemical smells.

i totally get this!!

I would not want to use a bathroom for a poo if there was no air freshener!

I don’t think it’s weird at all! More weird to not care if people smell your toilet deposits imo🤣

Yeah, I don't want to leave a pong if I can help it. I always do my best to alleviate smells, open a window if possible, and if there is air-freshener, spray a bit into the loo bowl before pooping, more effective, and less intrusive.

My ex-FIL used to retire to the toilet for about half an hour each morning with his pipe and his newspaper and never opened a window or tried to do anything about the apalling stench he left. It was horrific, and bad enough in their own house, but he also did it in our very small house when he visited. I stopped caring about offending him eventually and would open the window before he went in, plus nearest windows in the house, then when he emerged, go straight in after him, re-open the window he had closed, spray the room and squirt bleach round the bowl.

Distictionpray · 10/09/2026 08:34

My parents starting keeping air fresheners by the loos when my father had bowel cancer. I didn’t ask about it.
Mum stopped getting them after Dad died. They just put an extra layer of sickly, sweet perfume into the mix with the existing odours anyway. Makes me feel sick.

BadBadCat · 10/09/2026 08:33

YABU!

Everyone will know you had a poo whether you use air-freshener or not! Actually, they will know for sure you had a poo if you had to use air-freshener! And poo smell mixed with air-freshener is probably a worse smell than just poo!

Thepeopleversuswork · 10/09/2026 08:31

manateeplushie · 09/09/2026 23:16

I hate spray air fresheners, I'd rather a temporary pooey smell than the lingering stench of poo mixed with artificial flowers

This. Febreze makes me gag: it doesn’t get rid of the shit smell it just masks it but layers on a cheap, nasty sweet smell on top. Just open a window.
