AIBU to expect air freshener in toilets when visiting friends?

Is there an expectation that people's toilets should have an air freshener in? Like a spray air freshener?

We always have air freshener in both our toilets in case friends or family get caught short when visiting us or even to freshen the bathroom after having a wee if necessary, so I hate it if I go to a friend/family members house and they have none.

I get some people may be affected by asthma but surely if you had asthma you wouldn't use it?

We have a glade air freshener at work that sprays into the space where the wash handbasins are for example.

I’m allergic to air freshener and perfumed products so there is no freshener but my bathroom window is always open a tiny bit.

New research is linking over use of fragrance products to various health issues. It will be the way of sweeteners, people will not care. They set off my sisters asthma.

I hate those bloody timed squirt ones in public loos.

TheeNotoriousPIG · 10/09/2026 12:06

I don't think I've ever had air freshener in any of my bathrooms. I have loo cleaner gel, loo brushes, and the windows are almost permanently open.

Some aerosols get on my chest anyway, and I come from a long line of asthmatics, so I don't think they have air fresheners in their bathrooms, either.

Wonkybaby · 10/09/2026 12:02

I loathe spray air fresheners, they smell revolting and you get a horrible combo of shit + fake flowers. Open a window, squirt some bleach down the loo if you’ve had a shit, that should do it. Failing that a box of matches as PP said

Eew, no. Air fresheners smell disgusting and they don't actually disguise any unpleasant smells - they just mix together like shit and chemical flowers. Literally. So gross. That's why I'd never live in a home that has no bathroom windows. The only way to make a bathroom smell nice is by airing it out with fresh air.

DirtyBird · 10/09/2026 11:47

honestly the smell of air freshener and shit makes me ill. There’s no covering up that smell so let it be.

Connectedw · 10/09/2026 11:45

Air fresheners are toxic. So bad for your body and the environment.
Also, if you’re using one, you’re just bringing it to everyone’s attention that you’ve had a shit, no?

wishingonastar101 · 10/09/2026 11:40

I don't want airfreshner smell on my clothes...grim.
Open a window if you make a smell. But also maybe think about adding fibre to your diet. And drink more water. You poo and wee should not stink (obs anything not flushed will stink but hoping you flush!)

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 10/09/2026 11:27

YABVU

Not only does my dd have asthma (which you’ve accounted for) but they smell disgusting.

When there’s a bad smell, the last thing you want to do is try to mask it with a second smell, this one artificial and also horrible.

You need to open a window to get rid of smells in the bathroom, and put some toilet cleaner in the toilet.

Isittimeformynapyet · 10/09/2026 11:20

Calliopespa · 10/09/2026 01:30

It shouldn't linger that long after being flushed. Maybe if you have a stomach bug or something, but generally speaking it is gone fairly quickly, especially if you open the window.

I find the smell of air freshener like a descant over the top of a base note of stink quite stomach-churning. It doesn't disguise it, just forms a kind of chorus.

I don't mind a room scent or diffuser like the Diptique or Jo Malone ones, but those are for scenting neutral rooms and I don't think they are intended to meld with fecal notes.

You sometimes smell people on the tube who smell of sweat or body odour, then they have this sickly whiff of scent layered over it, clearly intending to disguise the underlying pong - and it doesn't work!

I agree, but I'm mostly replying to applaud your musical analogy. Bravo 👏🏻 👏🏻

@ThisDandyWriter

you would expect someone to dip their hand in the water to wipe off a skid?!

yeah no. I’ll stick with a bog brush.

Exactly 😩

Plus, if they then decide to leave it as theyre stressed about the lack of brush and spray - you're then sticking your hand in to clean someone's shit!

The bakery right next door aren't too chuffed, though Grin

If someone is making a smell that’s strong enough to travel to neighbouring buildings, their diet might need some attention (or perhaps a Drs visit is in order) 😂

MrsShawnHatosy · 10/09/2026 10:56

Just like scented dog poo bags. Absolutely vile.

Or scented nappy sacks. 🤢

Treemouse · 10/09/2026 11:10

air fresheners can cause migraines in a lot of people.
why not just do a courtesy flush op! 😂

People who think air fresheners deal with the smell are delusional. As many others have pointed out, their use creates a synthetic floral/shit smell which is worse than just a shit smell.

Here’s the thing about opening the window- if you know you’re going to have a shit, you open the window first. I find this incredibly efficient- the smell doesn’t get a chance to permeate the room in the first place- it’s straight out of the window. By the time I’ve flushed, and then washed and dried my hands, any smell has gone.

I never understand the idea that loo brushes are unhygienic. I mean yeah, you wouldn’t want to lick one, obviously. But it lives inside a pot and only ever gets put in the loo. Nobody has to lick the brush or the pot or the loo or even get their face anywhere near it. After using one, most people will wash their hands with soap and hot water. I have always had loo brushes and they haven’t caused any illnesses thus far. I wonder if the people who find them so disgusting realise how utterly filthy most door handles are?

Greengage1983 · 10/09/2026 10:58

Most air fresheners contain awful chemicals that are really bad for you (as bad as smoking, according to some studies). I have asthma, and ALL air fresheners, even the really expensive ones made from natural ingredients, aggravate my lungs. I don't know why you say in your first comment, "if you have asthma just don't use it"... it's in the air. I still have to breathe it in whether it's me that sprays it or a guest.

Anyway, an air freshener doesn't mask the smell, it just adds to it, so you can smell air freshener AND poo.

If a guest needs a massive smelly poo while round my house, I expect everyone to be adult about it and simply not say anything, because we are all human and we all need to do it!

MrsShawnHatosy · 10/09/2026 10:56

Swissmeringue · 10/09/2026 10:18

YABU, they don't mask the smell they just add an awful, cloying artificial scent over the top of the poo scent. Crack a window and get some fresh air instead. I don't think I've ever bought air freshener.

Just like scented dog poo bags. Absolutely vile.

ThisDandyWriter · 10/09/2026 10:01

I would never, ever have a toilet brush, ever.

I think they are the most disgusting and unhygienic things ever.

If there is a skid, someone can use toilet paper to wipe off their own shit from the bowl (or aim better).

Yolo12345 · 10/09/2026 10:53

these chemicals are killing us actually

PyschodelicSoup · 10/09/2026 10:52

Spraying synthetic chemicals into the air? No thanks. I'd rather live with a temporary (but natural) poo smell.

I personally don’t want to smell anyone’s shit including my family members. People who think a reed diffuser, a candle or an open window deal with the smell are delusional. Yes they do, EVENTUALLY. For someone who walks into a toilet shortly after you and has to deal with the smell - ewww.

there are a variety of air sprays and not all of them are aerosol based.

People who think air fresheners deal with the smell are delusional. As many others have pointed out, their use creates a synthetic floral/shit smell which is worse than just a shit smell.

I realise that not everybody on MN is/has been a parent of a small child; but it never ceases to amaze me how many people on here are utterly terrified of ever copping the faintest whiff of a poo on their journeys!

BrezhnevsLuxuriantEyebrows · 10/09/2026 10:48

Happyjoe · 09/09/2026 23:49

So you use a brush - how do you clean the brush? How do you clean the bacteria in the loo? How do you stop dribbling bits of poopy water all over the seat while you put the brush part back in it's container?

I haven't actually checked her website yet to confirm it, but I'm pretty sure that 'Poopy Water' will be a product that Gwyneth Paltrow sells for $250 a vial!

APC303 · 10/09/2026 07:26

Worst nightmare on holiday 😔

Its just good hosting to provide one! And air freshener!

To all those who hate toilet brushes - i am.not talking about the expensive ones that go with your bathroom décor

I'm talking £1.50 cheap one that gets thrown away as soon as its grim

Please dont moan at me about the planet, noone wants a stinky bathroom!

Whynottryagain · 10/09/2026 10:34

I hate air freshener. Smells horrible to me. I don't think I've ever seen airfreshener in anyone's bathroom for guests to use! Nor would it occur to me to use it.

I agree with pp saying just open the window or turn on the extractor fan.

But I have never been bothered about temporary smells in the toilet. Everyone poos, it's what the toilet is for.
