Sweets at cubs and beavers

Do your kids get sweets at cubs and beavers as a reward for good behaviour? My sons always come back wired and it takes hours for them to go to bed. Don’t know if I’m old fashioned and it’s a thing now but would rather they weren’t having sweets at 7pm midweek. AIBU?

Then stop him going if it’s such an issue

Offer to help out then you can make changes. I help out at Cubs and it’s a huge thankless job for the leader.

My husband helps out and thinks the sweets add to the craziness 😂

Mine did at Rainbows, in fact it was so much that DH and I used to think it was funny as many of the parents couldn't believe the months worth of sweets in one night! However, Rainbows was really so it didn't impact sleep.

I’d be absolutely fine with that but it’s EVERY week.

Mine didn't at beavers/ cubs, but I did find that it was too late for him as he got really over stimulated and struggled to regulate his behaviour, despite being really well behaved at school. Cubs didn't finish until 8 and it was just too late for him- but he's an early bird. But it did look a bit like a sugar high/ giddiness

isn't it more likely to be the buzz of the group rather than the sugar? I thought the whole sugar = hyperactivity had been disproven for the majority of children in scientific studies.

This is true.

DD often gets sweets at brownies. Total non issue IMO. It’s far more likely that your DS is wired from the activity itself than a few haribo.

I think this is more likely. Mine didn’t have sweets but were still more wired and harder to get to bed.

Not usually no. We do a party at end of each term where they get some sweet treats, but not every week. 7pm is also a late finish for Beavers, some of whom will only be 6. Our Beavers is 5-6pm. This might be the issue - they are getting excited when would naturally be winding down for bed, so adrenaline kicks in and makes them wired

I took donuts to a brownies meeting once and they acted like I was trying to kill them 😩
