AIBU to think many people of the UK lack confidence in the current government?

AIBU to think that the majority of people in the UK don't have any confidence in the current government, with an unelected Prime Minister at its' helm?

Would people be willing to vote on a petition to have a parliamentary debate on this matter, to encourage this government to have a snap General Election? This would give the people - the tax payers - as say in who is running the country. Democracy in action, if you will.

AIBU - people are happy with Labour and the unelected PM

YANBU - people have a democratic right to vote for who they want to run the country and right now, the majority don't have confidence in the current government.

Late 90s for me!

I was being generous. 😂Pretty much 99/2000 was when I began to lose faith.

I haven't had confidence in any UK government since the early 2000s!

YANBU, but I can't say I had any confidence in the last government, or the one before that. I don't recall snap elections doing the country any favours. We've had 7 PMs in the last 10 years...I can't say I think moving it to 8 will improve anything.

I lack confidence in the UK population and media. The triple lock must be scrapped. It’s madness. Do we trust pensioners - many of which are pretty selfish and don’t understand the wider economic context- and the daily mail not to whip people up into thinking they’re being robbed? No we don’t. So the policy won’t go through and people’s lives will keep getting worse.

Mmmm......bit of a sweeping statement! I think you'll find a lot of older people have a good knowledge of economics. We've been through it all before again and again.

Dilemma999 · 09/09/2026 17:29

I think you’ve illustrated how uninformed you are. You say Restore and Reform would do a better job of running the country. Have a quick look at how well the Reform led Councils are doing. Sounds like you’re only interested in the usual single issue of ‘stop the boats’ (by the way, small boat crossings are down 42% on this time last year).

Ditto Gordon Brown, Liz Truss and Rushi Sunak. Nothing unconstitutional has happened. We don't have a presidential system. What has happened is that some people have come to see PMs as consumer goods. Don't like those one? No problem. Let's try another.

And Teresa May and Boris Johnson.

when he went for the PM job, no one went against him. The public did not vote him in

@EmeraldRoulette

It was Mayoral led which ours is elected Labour and the space left by AB
If they are to be belived they are trying to form a Co-op which again is very popular as the town next-door invented, it.

They local response and love of place from the local comunity apeared to have really brought atention to It. As mentioned in previous posts we have been Labour for years then unbelivably fliped to Cons and then we fliped back. I dont know if this has opened the eyes of people to the prospect that you can vote for someone different than your mum or dad and just becasue your city or utd for life doesnt mean your politics has to be which is all I have ever wanted as acountability is hard around here if you put an alsatian with a red rosette on they would previously have got in no matter what amazing canidate was in oposition.

If you like I will Pm you the link to the project?

I've never voted Conservative before. there is no hypocrisy, though I know it makes you feel better to suggest it. Kemi Badenoch has never been leader before. She's leader now. I'd be voting for her party..

Me too. She's swung me back to the Tories. If she carries on as she is, they will win me back permanently.

I am a pensioner and I do think the triple lock should be abolished. I would be very much happier for resources to be geared towards young families instead of me.
And I feel the same way about the winter fuel allowance. I am eligible for it but I don't need it.
I would also be very happy to pay NI on my pension.
I see many young families struggling and it's not fair

Did you refuse your winter fuel allowance or pay it back? I don't understand people who think we should struggle because others are struggling. I know it's difficult for young people but me freezing and getting ill is only going to strain resources and not help them. This government wastes so much money they could sort that out and there would be enough money to go round. I am happy to have a lower increase but not while benefit claimants and mp expenses are as high as they are.

And? He left being Mayor of Greater Manchester to become an MP. He was democratically elected. I just don’t get what you are trying to suggest? People like him. I’ve met him. He’s a good man. And his government are doing good things, hence the move in the opinion polls towards Labour, who are now leading said polls.

I think he needs to understand that he is PM of the whole country though.

I lack confidence in all of them, and our media.

This.

Labour are the least worst option to me, but nothing great, but then I don't think any would be good and Reform would be dreadful. Already fucking up my local authority spectacularly.

The media don't help with their 'fast fashion' attitude to PMs either.

46%? 46% of what? 46% of where? How big was the voting sample? What were the demographics of it? Thanks.

YouGov August poll. I assume the same sort of sampling they use when they conduct any poll. I'm not a pollster but I believe you can find answers to your questions by Googling how polls are conducted.

Can you take me through how he was elected an MP step by step? Before during and after? Thanks.

He stood in a by-election which was fiercely contested by Reform. He won that election. He was then chosen by Labour MPs to be their leader and hence Prime Minister. What’s your point?

lazyarse123 · 09/09/2026 17:03

I would be happy for mine to be means tested, I would probably get more but how would that work with the contributions people have paid in? Plus the cost of doing it might not be worth it.

Those statistics have never been collected by any Government of any colour.
I think you just want to believe what you believe.
The facts are crime is lower now than it has been at any time. . Rates of homicide in England and Wales are the lowest they have been since 1977. Domestic burglary has decreased by about 50% since 2010. So has vehicle theft, and phone theft, has fallen by 70% over the same period.
Reported crime against women has increased but previously a lot of crime against women wasn't reported at all or it wasn't even considered a crime previously many were written off as domestics, and coercive control wasn't a crime, rape wasn't reported because in many cases women weren't believed and rape in marriage was legal anyway.
There is no evidence that migrants are any more likely to commit violence against women than other men. But people like someone to blame and usually that is someone different from themselves.
The truth is men whatever colour they are are the problem .

Oh bless you. obviously they are not collected 'by the government' specifically. They are collected by the police. the data exists. The MoJ have it.

Keep your cognitive dissonance, it helps you justify your decisions.

@CoventryCity I get the sense that you voted Labour and you are disappointed? I’m quite confused by that sort of person because I think they have done the things I was expecting anyway. Maybe I wasn’t expecting some of it to be quite as bad…

No I never voted labour, this time, I've not voted for them for a long time.

You're asking two seperate questions with two seperate answers there.
Confidence in the government is as low as it is under any government. 45% of people almost never trust the government.
Confidence in Burnham is much higher. 46% view him favourably and he is streaks ahead of any other political leader in the uk.

46%? 46% of what? 46% of where? How big was the voting sample? What were the demographics of it? Thanks.

More people have confidence in the current government than they have in any of the other parties.
I don't think you understand how the democratic system works in the UK.
Our current Prime Minister has been elected legally and democratically. We don't vote for a Prime Minister when we vote and we never have. We don't have a presidential system like in the USA. We elect an MP to represent us. The Party who has most MPs elect their leader and that person becomes the Prime Minister. That has always been the system.
Andy Burnham was elected as an MP, he is a member of the Labour Party and he was elected by them to be their leader so he is the Prime Minister.

Can you take me through how he was elected an MP step by step? Before during and after? Thanks.

But people haven’t really “paid into” the State Pension there’s no personal pension pot. Today’s workers largely fund today’s pensioners. And with an ageing population, there are now more over-65s than under-16s, with proportionately fewer workers supporting more pensioners. Something has to give the current system can’t just carry on indefinitely.
