AIBU to think many people of the UK lack confidence in the current government?

AIBU to think that the majority of people in the UK don't have any confidence in the current government, with an unelected Prime Minister at its' helm?

Would people be willing to vote on a petition to have a parliamentary debate on this matter, to encourage this government to have a snap General Election? This would give the people - the tax payers - as say in who is running the country. Democracy in action, if you will.

AIBU - people are happy with Labour and the unelected PM

YANBU - people have a democratic right to vote for who they want to run the country and right now, the majority don't have confidence in the current government.

I'm guessing you vote Tory and you didn't mind them being completely incompetent and corrupt.
I bet you didn't complain when May, Johnson and Truss became PM without an GE.

You mention laws here and I agree they inform behaviour, so does culture, education and parenting. A leaflet is scant.

It is when you consider a better program of education would be beneficial but unfortunately that would not be tolerated - the ‘illegals’ would then be getting free education !
Adults housed under the asylum system, awaiting a HO decision are left to find their own way - any education is done by volunteers - integration would be well served if we had some education from day 1

No I think the countries these men come from do not use legal controls to modify men's behaviour towards women and girls in the way we try to here. I don't believe this causes decent men in those countries to abuse women and girls, rather it allows those who want to a fairly easy way to do it. Hence the offending rate is higher.
In much the same way white British men will take advantage of less progressive cultures, old men buying young wives, using sex workers where the laws allow, paying housekeepers exploitation wages, that they don't do here because its illegal. We had to legislate so white British men knew marital rape and sex with underage girls was wrong remember.
In the UK, abusing women and girls carries a higher risk for men.The leaflet will ensure the men know this and those with those tendancies who might otherwise have thought it low risk will know otherwise, which should result in some self policing on pain of imprisonment/deportation.

She says 'He mustn't have read the leaflet'. My reading is that she is mocking the leaflet (understandable) and suggesting, tongue in cheek, that he wouldn't have committed the crime if he had read the leaflet.

What's your reading?

Mine is that reading the leaflet would make no difference and it’s mocking Labour / anyone who thinks it will.

I see, so do you think the places where the men are coming from who get the leaflets are comparable re how they treat women and girls?

You say men here can’t lead by example, so how similar is it in your view?

Edited

When you visit a different country it’s normal to be informed of their laws - such as Brits visiting the UAE.

I work with separated children and have done for over 10 years - working 1-1 and with 15-21 year olds - never felt threatened or disrespected as a female. The only males I have worked with with warning markers for lone visits have been British.

Do I think all male, British young men are a risk from that experience - no. Do I think male asylum seekers never commit offences against women - no

I just don’t see one group as any more of a threat than the other.

See her 9.25am today post, in which she wonders whether the perpetrator of a case of sexual assault she read about yesterday had read the leaflet.

@CoventryCityare you Farage or Badenoch?

EasternStandard · 10/09/2026 13:17

5128gap · 10/09/2026 13:09

Its not intended to match it. Its intended for two different audiences. Education in schools is to address why when our laws are known and our culture is supposedly so progressed, we still have an epidemic of male violence against women and girls. To address the fact that our culture is still somehow managing to produce rapists and abusers of women and girls.
The leaflets for the new arrivals are to ensure they know what our laws are and our culture is supposed to be. Because its safe to say they are not going to get a reliable lesson from observation.

@CoventryCity is labouring under the delusion that reading a leaflet will halt rape. It won't. Changing behaviour is difficult and requires a range of interventions before things start to change.

Where does she say that?

Yup - the uk Gov have produced a similar campaign aimed at British armed forces personnel, general public and teachers consent in schools - it’s not a new idea.

Just one difference there, and it's called culture.

It was a question. If your answer is a no then I agree.

If it’s a yes then I’m not sure how it would.

brunettemic · 10/09/2026 12:59

The implication that I’ve had confidence in any government for a long time has tickled me.
Side note, he is an elected PM as much as any PM we have. He’s an elected MP and is leader of his party. We don’t vote for the PM in our system, not matter what people might do and how their vote is influenced we vote for our local MP.

This thread wins two prizes:

  1. Most crotchety
  2. Most obtuse OP

And two points on the leaflets:

  1. The leaflets do not crudely say 'Do not rape'. They explain what consent is to men from cultures where it may not be a given. Saying 'Do not rape' would be meaningless without an understanding of consent.
  2. As you have pointed out yourself, @CoventryCity, the data shows higher rates of sexual assault and rape by immigrant men than by British men. Given this, would you prefer the government to be supine and take no steps at all to address the issues involved?

No. it's highest now than it's been since 2018. Clearly you haven't read the latest government stats; as I have.

Show your working then. All of the evidence is that inward migration is dramatically down compared with where it peaked under the Tories.

I wonder if the recent (well I says most recent, I saw it yesterday, who knows what has happened since then) asylum seeker / illegal immigrant / immigrant rapist in the papers, had read the leaflet. He'd been researching sexual attacks on his phone, before he sexually attacked. He mustn't have read the leaflet.

Clearly you haven't looked at the figures as I have:

Highest inward migration under Blair was 596k in 2006. Brown wasn't any higher. By 2018 (so before the Boriswave), the Tories had let rip and it reached 825k. It peaked at 1441k in 2023.

I remember the Tories promising to bring net migration "down to the tens of thousands". In 2022 net migration it hit 891k. The highest it got to under Labour was 245k in 2004.

It's not boats that are being counted, FFS. It's the number of people arriving on boats that has reduced by 42%
Boat size is entirely irrelevant to the statistics.

I agree. So Labour saying boats have decreased, as they do sometimes, is pointless. Thank you for agreeing with me. And see the stats I posted above. Number of arrivals (as in people) has not decreased. In fact it's at the highest point since 2018. Stats above. (FFS)
