To call in sick?

I’m on my first day back at work after 10 days annual leave.

I was walking down the road this morning when I rolled my ankle and fell, I have horrific grazes on my knee and elbow, and my ankle is swelling up hugely and is painful even at rest.

AIBU to turn up, explain what’s happened and go home? When I’m cleaned up I could probably work but I’m in so much pain at the moment I feel sick, I have two fresh grazes that are about to bleed through my clothes and I don’t know whether the adrenaline carried me to the bus or if I can walk.

Glad you got it looked at. I'm with those saying you should be off work at least the rest of this week. Healing is a tiring business.

Take care as it starts improving- I sprained my ankle badly when I was in my late teens. (Don't know if it was fractured, never had an x-ray.) A few weeks later, I was walking down the street and felt it going again, so I put all my weight on to the other side - and that one went instead. They wrote very wesk for years after, even though i did my exercises.

Talkingfrog · 10/09/2026 01:19

Glad you got it looked at. Hope you are feeling a bit better in the morning. Just a thought - do you work in a single story building/ on the ground floor, or are you based on a higher floor. If not ground floor make sure that your boss/hr or whoever the appropriate person is know that in the event of an evacuation of the building you will need assistance/be slower to leave. Chance of needing to evacuate is very slim, but still needs to be thought about.
I fell on ice winter time, ended up feeling achy and badly grazed my arm. I was not far from home so was able to walk back, and work from home instead. I did clean up the graze and give myself a bit of time before I logged on. When I showed people how my arm (it bled through 2 layers of clothes) they were horrified how bad it looked. Fortunately no reason to think I broke anything so managed to avoid needing a hospital visit.

hmmdunno · 10/09/2026 00:37

What stuff and nonsense, ridiculous fuss over a broken ankle. Just chop the whole leg off and be done with it. A good long hop to work in the morning will clear your head and set you up for the day.

Emeraldforest · 09/09/2026 23:15

See how you get on today but it sounds like you need medical attention and feel pretty sorry for yourself, I've had a few falls and soldiered on only to end up in x ray a few days later.Take care!

SecretSquid · 09/09/2026 22:54

@iminpain please think about taking tomorrow off. You need to get a compression bandage on it (can't believe they didn't do that for you?) and a broken bone will make you feel like shit tomorrow when your body uses all your energy to start the healing process.

I'm sorry you're prone to falls like this, but as you say you're now used to it, so can cope without feeling shocked. For someone who isn't prone to falling, a bad fall can really shake you up and if it results in a fracture, as it has here, OP really does need to let the swelling go down before trying to be more active or she could end up with long-term damage. I speak from bitter experience. My bad fall and resultant minor fracture in my foot still bothers me 20 years later if I stand too long because I stupidly walked on it, instead of resting it as I should have done.

I was the same. Did my ligaments in with a bad fall in my 20's and because i didn't rest it enough i had 30 years of it giving out randomly.
I was out of action each time for a fortnight, black, purple and yellow right up to my knee.

I am so careful now.
Rest is so important.

TigerJoy · 09/09/2026 22:36

I had a similar fracture a while back. It was agony. I was hopeless at work for weeks because I was so tired from the pain, my brain was a total fog. I kept falling asleep at random times. I think I had 3 weeks off in total.

I wouldn't have been safe to drive!

Stay at home for 3 days, at least. Contact your GP in the morning and request a referral to the fracture clinic. Request physio when you are better. But this first week or two REST.

JoyfulSpring · 09/09/2026 22:30

I haven't read the full thread, only the OPs updates but I will say I had the same fracture happen to me in May this year. It was ok the evening of the day I did it but my god the pain and stiffness in the week following was awful! Sorry to say I still have aching and stiffness in it all these weeks and months later, especially if I've walked a lot. A&E also sent me home the same day with the same advise but the virtual fracture clinic phoned me the next day to say I needed to come in for a boot. I got away with something smaller but I can't remember the name of it. I couldn't drive my automatic for a good week as the pain was too much. I would say it isn't wise to work the rest of this week as you'll need to keep it raised and iced as much as possible and you will likely find it is very painful tomorrow.

There are some complete twats on this thread! Absolutely shocking and quite pathetic the attitude that work is more important than anything else because you have a contract to fulfil! Ffs people need to get a life! Rest up OP!

I turn my ankles a lot. Occasionally I subluxate a knee or hip. Usually when I do this I hit the deck and end up with skinned knees/elbows, grazes, bruises etc. Just like a child, or someone with a condition that contributes to them falling a lot.

On the plus side I’m used to it so I can manage to get to work and crack on without being shocked and adrenaline-filled because I fell over.

A sprained ankle and skint knee is not a reason to skip work unless you work in a job that involves you being on your feet all day.
If you work in an office you are being absolutely ridiculous, take a couple of ibuprofen and ice your ankle at work and if needed im sure you can get a couple of plasters for your knee from the 1st aid box

How rude and mean.

A sprained ankle requires treatment and possibly assessment for a broken bone.

Ha! Just read OP’s update.
Hope you’re suitably embarrassed and ashamed for your stupid comments.

The idea of resting is for the whole body and nervous system to promote healing of the affected area, not just a focus on the affected area e.g., bandages etc.

No, it isn’t. A fracture won’t necessarily be more painful than a “lesser” injury. She’s weight-bearing - contrary to what she initially said - this is a massive over-reaction to a minor injury. As well as having been fairly offensive in a number of different ways. But I’ll leave it now, you know, so I can focus on falling over like a child.

Try reading up a bit on the recognised treatment of a sprain - OP may have an avulsion fracture but this is a result of the forces of the accident. The ligaments will have been badly stretched and stressed if it's caused the fracture of that type.

Because ligaments are involved, bad sprains can take much longer to heal than a simple fracture as the blood supply is much less to ligaments. All advice for even minor sprains is avoid walking on it for up to 72 hours.

As well as having been fairly offensive in a number of different ways. But I’ll leave it now, you know, so I can focus on falling over like a child.

And saying if someone falls over it's being "like a child"? THAT in itself is very offensive! But clearly that was your objective by phrasing it in that way.

Unless you spend all your time when walking looking at the ground in front of you, it's very easy to catch the edge of a lifted up paving stone, or a pavement equivalent of a pot hole, or even to slip if the ground is wet - the weather in the south this past week, combined with the leaves starting to fall from the trees, has made many pavements incredibly slippery.

I fell over the other day, wasn’t badly hurt, but ended up having to have a cry in bed when I got home. So you’re much braver than me!

It just really sucks. I feel like a child, who skins their knee and elbow as an adult?!

You poor thing.
The nastiness on this thread is absolutely disgraceful.
Falling down is awful.
Your foot is really hurt.
You will probably be black and blue tomorrow.
I have done this a couple of times and it can easily take several weeks to feel steady on your feet again.
Did they suggest an anti inflammatory to take?
Rest is key.
I hope it heals quickly.
I found arnica cream helped the soreness.

Unable to work but well enough to post about it on mumsnet 🙄 👍🏻

I can only assume YOUR job requires no skills further than a quick bit of typing and hitting send.

The OP was at work - left to attend A&E where she discovers she has actually fractured her ankle - plans to return to work tomorrow anyway... so your pointless little dig is just nasty, not even relevant.

Plenty of people have jobs that require more ability than just typing, at their own pace. It is easily conceivable that say, a brain surgeon, a gardener, a horse trainer, a bricklayer ... myriad jobs, would be impossible, whilst typing and hitting send would still be possible.

Not very imaginative are you.

OP I found the boot intolerable after my avulsion fracture. I found a tubular support bandage so much better. My ankle was a disgusting colour and swollen and it was worst first thing in the morning. I put a bandage on it and it helped.

I need to get one of these in the morning

I have no idea. It’s called an avulsion fracture and treatment is like a severe sprain, so rest and ice.

I thought it might be that. Mine looked exactly the same when I stepped off a kerb and rolled my ankle. It was stiff for a year afterwards so keep it moving after the 4 weeks are up so you don't get permanent stiffness.

And it does bloody hurt! I too was in shock and even went out for a meal afterwards but that evening it throbbed so much I cried. I'm not a crier. Listen to the doctor's advice and you'll get better quicker. I went back to work 2 days later and I should have worked from home for the month. Do what I didn't do and you won't regret it like I did.

The info I was given does seem to contradict what’s said online about how this would be managed but I can’t help but think it’s just how the NHS works now

I was given a boot for the same fracture last year. It didn’t work for me as it pressed against the fracture and was agony, but at least I was offered it.

@iminpain - please listen to @SylvanMoon. She's right. And at least get a proper boot for you to walk on, if you insist on walking. Much better than crutches at the moment. I fractured a small bone in my foot 3 years ago now, with a fall, and despite 6 weeks' rest without putting much weight on it and using a boot even whilst it was elevated, and for months afterward, I still have trouble with it now. I can't help but think that you've been poorly advised by the health professionals you saw, and I would suggest a visit to your GP for clarification (and a sick note).

I hope you’re ok op. You didn’t get much sympathy on this post. I’m glad you got seen quickly. Keep on top of the painkillers don’t let them wear off and be in pain. Hope it heals quickly for you xx

I’m just in a lot of pain this evening. Hopefully it’ll clear with a dose of painkillers and a good nights sleep

Hope he put that in writing for you, so you can raise a complaint.
