To call in sick?

I’m on my first day back at work after 10 days annual leave.

I was walking down the road this morning when I rolled my ankle and fell, I have horrific grazes on my knee and elbow, and my ankle is swelling up hugely and is painful even at rest.

AIBU to turn up, explain what’s happened and go home? When I’m cleaned up I could probably work but I’m in so much pain at the moment I feel sick, I have two fresh grazes that are about to bleed through my clothes and I don’t know whether the adrenaline carried me to the bus or if I can walk.

I’m going to contact them but I don’t want to appear attention seeking. I’d have expected a fracture to be reviewed in clinic at least?

You are seeking attention: appropriate attention to an issue you wish to treat appropriately for an optimal recovery.

I understand it can be very difficult to raise a concern like this an
s you may have worries about upsetting people involved. Just like you, they can manage a bit of upset, it’s not your job to protect them, and they may not even get upset (or even get feedback). Your only responsibility is to your own well-being.

Are you avoiding the difficult next step by engaging with the challenging posts on this thread? You could ignore those, take a deep breath and attend to your own needs, not their’s. Don’t shrink yourself to fit in.

From my understanding of my own fracture is that a referral to a fracture clinic depends on the severity and location of the fracture. They're all ankle fractures, but some are worse than others. Hence why treatment and follow ups has differed from other commentators.

If you've been told to treat it like a bad sprain and a referral isn't needed (also the advice I had), then that's the advice for your particular type of fracture. I am surprised you weren't given some from of support/splint (though I can see why the boot might not be needed) for it though. I couldn't weight bear properly for a couple weeks without wearing it and the mild compression helped with the pain.

I would seek out a change to your GP notes through PALS. A fracture is still a fracture, even if the treatment is the same for a sprain.

I get what you mean, OP. I have dyspraxia and am prone to the odd tumble in public, unfortunately, and it makes me feel like a kid even now I'm 58! 😄(Not suggesting you have dyspraxia yourself btw, just saying these things happen.)

It’s more the fact I’m in my twenties with my one and elbow bandaged up like I used to when I was a child 😂 no idea that was offensive to say!

I also never suggested anyone was deficient! I just feel like a kid - I’m just missing the peppa pig plaster!

Who falls over and skins their knees and elbows like a child - as I said in my PP, I and many other adults hit the deck regularly. I skin things, sprain things, dislocate things. I'm not a child. It was bloody rude and insensitive to suggest that adults who fall are deficient.

The fuss made is ridiculous - to someone who falls over regularly (I usually fall because my ankle has given up trying, and so regularly have an ankle the size of the OP's in the picture. I manage to wear socks and shoes, because I don't have a choice. It hurts. Frankly, so fucking what?) the OP has turned something that - with proper perspective - is a minor, unpleasant experience into a whole performance. In the course of doing that she has showed a towering insensitivity to those around her.

If you're going to trivialise other people's experiences because of your own, don't be surprised if people disagree with you. We all have our own ways of experiencing, processing and dealing with personal injury, and other people's is just as valid as your own. I agree with pp that you're displaying 'a towering insensitivity' yourself.

The nurse I saw was very almost angry that I had come in? I sat down and he said “well what makes you think it’s a fracture and not a sprain? Because a&e isn’t for a sprain” and I explained because of the pain and the swelling, he told me because the pain was radiating it’s not a fracture.

Then he came back after the x ray and told me it was a fracture “but it’s not what you’re thinking, it’s not bad and you’re not getting a cast” and left me to it.

He sounds awful, and resentful of you being there. Shame you didn’t have anyone with you to advocate if you couldn’t. He sound almost gleeful about not giving you a boot or cast. V poor.

Like the dead!!!I don’t think anyone can help now as the a&e advice was just to treat it like a sprain.

Glad to hear it! Rest! I reckon you should apply for jobs and get your union dues sorted because that manager of yours is a disgrace. I am sorry you encountered a lot of flak yesterday. I tried to support you but mumsnet objected to me likening some of the ladies to certain farm yard animals. It must have been a day off for school matrons from the 1950s yesterday. They seem to have gone off with their paper towels now.

Maybe work on your own anger issues. Stop projecting others’ comments as a personal insult to yourself when they're nothing of the sort. For goodness sake, grow up 🙄

Agree wholeheartedly

They put me in a boot for my ankle avulsion fracture, didn’t arrange a follow up fracture clinic appointment as “they heal just fine with no complications”. Paperwork to my GP said sprain 🤔 I saw the fracture on the screen, they pointed it out to me so no idea why the paperwork said different 🤷‍♀️ You could ring the department and ask for clarification? Ask why they’ve changed what they’ve originally diagnosed? Maybe there’s been a mix up and that’s why they’ve not given you a boot?

My only worry is, the GP has been told it’s a sprain. So I look like I’m lying.

Yep I'd push them a bit, personally, to ensure the correct diagnosis goes down on your GP's records, then you can refer work to the GP for corroboration, so to speak, if they get funny. Although I think it's appalling when employers give their staff a hard time over things like this.

JoyfulSpring · 10/09/2026 10:58

Yes I think you should have been referred to the virtual fracture clinic for a fracture. As I said, a&e told me I didn't need a boot but the clinic phoned me the next day to say I needed to have one. I'd call the hospital switchboard and ask to speak to the fracture clinic. Explain the situation to them and ask for advice. It's normal for patients to call them for advice. The GP won't be able to do anything for you as it's the hospital that cared for you. Just call them and ask what to do. It's definitely not attention seeking and no one would see it like that!

Wow, appalling attitude from him! He's probably overworked and stressed but that's no excuse. It might not be severe but it's still a fracture and sounds as painful as fractures normally are. Also sounds like he was a bit embarrassed when proved wrong about it being a fracture.

Contact the PALS (Patient Advice and Liaison Service) at the hospital as soon as possible. Raise a concern that the written diagnosis differs from what you were told verbally: it is written you had a sprain but you were told you had the specific fracture. This matters because it may influence ongoing care and outcome. Let them know all this and ask for a rapid response to help guide your recovery. This should give you written evidence for your GP and ongoing care.

Contacting PALS is not a complaint, it is raising a concern. As others have said this should be raised as you need clarification and the attitude needs to be noted as it could indicate the outcome of under resourcing (leading to a decrease in the level of care) and give A&E evidence to get more staff.

Yes OP this!!!
Why are you so passive about this? The only person you are getting angry at is a certain poster, but you should be questioning your treatment. You should be reporting the way the nurse spoke to you and dismissed you. You should absolutely be making sure you have been given the correct advice/treatment.
