To call in sick?

I’m on my first day back at work after 10 days annual leave.

I was walking down the road this morning when I rolled my ankle and fell, I have horrific grazes on my knee and elbow, and my ankle is swelling up hugely and is painful even at rest.

AIBU to turn up, explain what’s happened and go home? When I’m cleaned up I could probably work but I’m in so much pain at the moment I feel sick, I have two fresh grazes that are about to bleed through my clothes and I don’t know whether the adrenaline carried me to the bus or if I can walk.

@iminpain I have no idea why your innocuous thread has attracted some very unpleasant posters.

Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Why are you still reading/posting on it, then? What an arrogant post.

I’ve not been so stoic offline! I’ve had a cry tonight because I just feel so useless and bruised

Falling is a really shock to your system and a cry is good to release it.
I did too.
This thread is such a perfect example of how ugly and nasty people can be.
I'm so blessed not to have people like this in my circle.
One of my buddies fell recently and was walking about on it for a few weeks thinking it was a bad sprain, an xray told her it was a break.
We have all gathered around her bringing lunch and fussing generally as decent friends do.

Your foot could feel very tight and especially sore in the morning.
You really need to rest it as much as possible.
You poor pet.

CountBoscoTheSecondsWife · 11/09/2026 09:18

I hope you're feeling a bit better today OP. Can't believe you got so many nasty replies. I've had loads of injuries over the years - breaks and sprains. I would consider I have a high pain threshold but when I had an avulsion fracture on my ankle I was in agony. My ankle was massive and black. I was put in a boot for 4 weeks, 2 weeks after still to wear it if I went out. I also attended the fracture clinic afterwards. It might be considered a minor injury because it heals well but it's not minor from a pain perspective. I was offered heavy duty Painkillers/anti inflammatories for first week. It's a fecking sprain and a break in one, on your little ankle joint that carries your entire body weight - how could it Not be massively painful. Hugs OP.

BeGoneUterus · 11/09/2026 09:11

I rolled my ankle playing netball. Heard the crack. Went to a&e - the nurse practitioner said it was a sprain to rehab it as much as possible to get back to playing (was also told x-ray would be reviewed by a consultant)

3 weeks later, still unable to really put my foot down. Went to GP - GP referred me to Hospital.

5 weeks later went to hospital appointment, where the consultant asked me how it was. I replied with 'it still really hurts and I struggle to put weight on it' He then replied 'I'm not surprised, you've got a nasty displaced fracture'

At that point I was plastered, and then required reconstruction surgery to fix it. I now have arthritis in my ankle.

You need to get clarity OP. I would be going back to the GP and getting an answer and proper treatment. They can and do make mistakes at a&e.

Not really, a sprained ankle is uncomfortable and will need some over the counter anti inflammatory painkillers ie ibuprofen and maybe some paracetamol, neither of which would effect her ability to work at a desk.

Doesn't that rather obviously depend on what does at their desk? 🤨

Geminispark · 11/09/2026 07:25

I had an avulsion fracture of my heel. They said it was a sprain then called me two days later to say it was a fracture. No treatment, no boot or anything. It was very bruised, swollen and painful but I managed to walk by dragging the foot. I ended up having physio after as it’s painful and tbh it’s never been right since. Hope you feel better soon.

Go to work and seek painkillers from first aid cupboard. Do your best to work for the day.
You need to reconnect. If you think you need an xray etc... organise from work and take the rest of day off.
But I am stoic and born last century.

read the thread, or at least OPs posts

Zanatdy · 11/09/2026 05:23

Hope you feel better soon OP and get to the bottom of whether it’s a sprain or fracture. Some real nasty women on mumsnet in recent years, such a shame its gone so downhill on here. Maybe MN need to start issuing warnings and then ban IP addresses.

A sprained ankle and skint knee is not a reason to skip work unless you work in a job that involves you being on your feet all day.
If you work in an office you are being absolutely ridiculous, take a couple of ibuprofen and ice your ankle at work and if needed im sure you can get a couple of plasters for your knee from the 1st aid box

Why don't you have a day off from being a bit of a bellend

Agapornis · 11/09/2026 00:11

You can slightly overlap hydrocolloidal/blister plasters to cover a bigger area.
They sell it on a roll now, it's great, I rarely use old fashioned plasters anymore.

I've had lifelong ankle and knee problems from a badly treated sprained ankle (swollen to double the size) in my early teens. Don't underestimate this.

Unable to work but well enough to post about it on mumsnet 🙄 👍🏻

It's her ankle that's poorly, not her fingers! I managed to be on Mumsnet while I was off work with Covid for a week. I felt dreadful but I could still read and type.

Could I see your medical credentials please?
A serious sprained ankle takes significantly longer to heal and is more painful than a broken ankle.

Adrenaline often masks pain of other injuries so quite possible the wrist or elbow had injuries.

Hope you are ok OP. I fell a year ago abd my knee ligaments are still dodgy.

Have you got a colloid plaster? They are game changers. You put one on and don’t need to take it off for at least five days and it encourages healing. They are like blister plasters for cuts.

edited to add, I see somebody else has also given you that advice!

Edited

I have some but they’re not big enough! I’ve found some spray plaster and put that on it for tonight as a dressing sticks to it!

I’m going to email pals tomorrow and see if I can get some clarity on what it is - if nothing else because I’ll need to declare for travel insurance for a trip in 6 weeks!

I still feel very shaken up. It’s really not helped by the pain of my knee - I have totally skinned it and it’s not scabbed over. It doesn’t help that it’s right on the joint so whenever I move it’s opening up again.

Depends on how old she is.
as I got older I don’t bounce back form falls in same way. I get a hefty dose of shock and pain is way worse

also I fell twice within 3 years, at work itself. Whilst travelling abroad. I was in my 50s. I struggled around work, then finally went to hospital. Both times I’d broken bones- an ankle and then later my elbow. I didn’t even bloody know, just knew it jolly well hurt and thought I couldn’t be woss, or “absolutely ridiculous “ so soldiered on stupidly.

sometimes people don’t realise straightaway, I never have when I’ve broken bones. Once it took 6 weeks for medics to X-ray a supposed strain to find I’d broken metatarsals, and needed a full boot, foot has been twisted since.

If she’s in a lot of pain, then a sensible work place will make sure she gets checked over by first aider, and if in any doubt a run to hospital.

Get well soon. I know the feeling. I am crying about this too. What made it worse at a&e yesterday was I told them I was allergic to ibuprofen and on my prescription was Brufen so I asked the secretary to double check. Not uk but it should have been in my patient file. Changed the painkiller but only because I questioned it.

Coming in late, OP, to sympathise and tell you to buy hydrocolloid plasters for the grazes, they make a massive difference. I was in a similar state for slightly different reasons 6 weeks or so ago. To start with I've got plantar fasciitis in one foot so that's painful all the time; and some pain in the opposite knee too. And then I fell over and hurt the other knee (basically flayed all the skin off one side of it), elbow and forearm on the same side (big grazes) and one deep dink in one of my hands. No fracture but generally it had me in the position where everything was painful.

Happily I happened to go to Sainsburys to try and find some plasters and the first ones I saw were large, very slim, hydrocolloid ones. Pricey, but absolutely worth it. Cleaned myself up, applied a bit of Savlon and then those. They make a massive difference. First, at least it you're caucasion, they are much less visible than a regular plaster; second, they stop it scabbing over in the same way, keep it moist and it heals much better. At least once those are healed you won't be in pain in so many places at once. Others have given advice on the fracture/ sprain but what I would say on that is, we got similar (but not as rude) treatment as you when daughter (who has dyspraxia) fell and hurt her foot - I now know it wasn't broken but the pain was certainly bad enough to have been but we got dismissed. They weren't even going to give us crutches until I insisted as she literlaly couldn't weight bear at all and couldn't get around. SHe struggled with the crutches (as I said, dyspraxia) and ultimately I had to take her back and insist on a boot. In her case that made things much better and she was suddenly mobile - I got things from Amazon called Even Ups which you strap to the bottom of the trainer on the other foot to even up your height and hence gait whilst wearing a boot. After a week or so booted I then got her a surgical shoe from Amazon which meant her foot was immobilized but her ankle wasn't, meaning she maintained a lot of mobility whilst the foot healed. They only gave me the boot though after the second visit to A&E after she hadn't been able to walk at all for a week and was in a lot of pain, and after a second set of xrays made them believe it 'could' be a slight fracture (a surprising number of fractures are missed on the first go, I now know from my GP friend, especially in kids). Anyway as I said, others have advised on your type of fracture but if you continue a long time in pain, do go back to some kind of medical establishment again.

Ooh I’ll try the hydrocolloid, I have some big ones! So sorry this happened to you, it’s truly shit

Hi OP I have nothing useful to advise but wanted to wish you a quick and pain-free recovery. You have been stoic and calm, in spite of what you are suffering, in the face of some downright nasty comments. I have seen a side of Mumsnet here that I didn’t know existed. I hope you are ok and can take heart from the supportive ones on here. Good luck!

Well I’ve never been seen that quickly in all my life! I arrived at 2, I’ve been x-rayed and discharged. I’ve got a very small fracture and need to rest for 4 weeks

Oh man! I saw your post when it first popped up and came back to check you were okay! Poor you! That’s awful! I hate how inconsistent the care can be in the uk! I’ve since moved countries and can choose which GP is my specific doctor and I’ve picked one who is competent and really useful!

I would go see your GP too! Can you fill in one of those online appointment things and provide a picture? If it looks sore they might be more likely to book you in. Hope you feel better soon!

Tturn up - you won’t regret it. There is a recession plus many redundancies coming and it would be good to have a reputation as someone with a decent work ethic.

What is it with people like you who are posting such unkind comments? Do you get some sort of pleasure from being nasty and down right ridiculous? Just out of interest what would be your threshold for taking sick leave, a severed limb, uncontrolled bleeding, projectile vomiting and explosive diarrhea. I have been staggered by the nastiness on this thread, i've had a sprained ankle, I was in a great deal of pain, immobile for several days and had a weakened ankle for a few years. Hope it never happens to you

Contact the PALS (Patient Advice and Liaison Service) at the hospital as soon as possible. Raise a concern that the written diagnosis differs from what you were told verbally: it is written you had a sprain but you were told you had the specific fracture. This matters because it may influence ongoing care and outcome. Let them know all this and ask for a rapid response to help guide your recovery. This should give you written evidence for your GP and ongoing care.

Contacting PALS is not a complaint, it is raising a concern. As others have said this should be raised as you need clarification and the attitude needs to be noted as it could indicate the outcome of under resourcing (leading to a decrease in the level of care) and give A&E evidence to get more staff.

I contacted PALS after a recent stay in hospital as my discharge notes were incorrect. They had put the pain I presented with to A&E as lower abdomen when it was upper abdomen and that I was asthmatic. I am not asthmatic, patient in the next bed was. I got my discharge notes corrected.

I found it a bit concerning that they'd made these errors but cannot fault A&E or the hospital I was transferred to for their care of me otherwise.
