To call in sick?

I’m on my first day back at work after 10 days annual leave.

I was walking down the road this morning when I rolled my ankle and fell, I have horrific grazes on my knee and elbow, and my ankle is swelling up hugely and is painful even at rest.

AIBU to turn up, explain what’s happened and go home? When I’m cleaned up I could probably work but I’m in so much pain at the moment I feel sick, I have two fresh grazes that are about to bleed through my clothes and I don’t know whether the adrenaline carried me to the bus or if I can walk.

Well I’ve never been seen that quickly in all my life! I arrived at 2, I’ve been x-rayed and discharged. I’ve got a very small fracture and need to rest for 4 weeks

If I was your boss I’d take you to get a medical opinion. You need to look after your health and your work has a duty of care to ensure you are ok in the workplace. Get yourself looked at and treat the injury accordingly.

I thought it wasn't an A&E thing when I badly twisted my knee.

Although it hurt, I went to the pub with some mates, got a lift home and when I tried to get out of the car, it completely gave way and I landed on my arse in the street.

I iced it as much as I could, then strapped it up with a crepe bandage. After a very sleepless night, I undid the bandage and, with no exaggeration, watched my knee double in size. I couldn't straighten it or put any weight on it, so called a cab and took myself to hospital.

After a couple of hours in A&E, they decided to do an arthroscopy to see what the fuck I'd done. When I woke up, my leg was in a cast from ankle to arse: I'd dislocated my kneecap and torn two ligaments. I spent two weeks in hospital and 6 weeks in plaster.

If the doctor/nurse writes a sick note have then add that because of the delay in being treated, time off will be longer than if you had been medically seen earlier.

I’m not going to go off unless it’s really serious. I’ve only ever had one week off work and that was for surgery!

Glad you’re getting it looked at. I sprained my ankle in my 20s, pretty badly. I was an idiot and hopped around for the rest of the day (was a weekend and went to work on the Monday), it did improve but took ages to heal - ended up getting an x-ray and physio as well.
My friend did similarly - ignored it and it was a fracture, ended up with an op.
More likely it’s soft tissue, but it can take longer to heal than a clean broken bone.

What job are you in that will not let to go to a&e in what is visibly an injury? Not getting treatment will maybe make it worse, having more time off to recuperate in the long run.

Think you were right to go to A&E - I was thinking reading it that you should either go there or go to work if A&E not needed, but not just home as that won’t make anything better.

Ask about ligament damage at A&E. I rolled my ankle earlier this year and it swelled massively and bruised black. I didn’t bother to get it looked at and my physio recently saw it and said I’ve ruptured a ligament so now have a permanently unstable ankle.

A similar thing happened to one of my employees a few weeks ago. There's no way I'd have expected them to sit in the office all day with so much swelling and pain. They went to A&E and turns out it was broken. Your manager sounds awful. Wishing you a speedy recovery, OP.

If you can go into work to tell them you're not well then they'll see you as well enough to come in and work. Why not just call? People make things harder for themselves than needs to be.
