To call in sick?

I’m on my first day back at work after 10 days annual leave.

I was walking down the road this morning when I rolled my ankle and fell, I have horrific grazes on my knee and elbow, and my ankle is swelling up hugely and is painful even at rest.

AIBU to turn up, explain what’s happened and go home? When I’m cleaned up I could probably work but I’m in so much pain at the moment I feel sick, I have two fresh grazes that are about to bleed through my clothes and I don’t know whether the adrenaline carried me to the bus or if I can walk.

Glad you went, I thought as much with the swelling etc. I had a fractured fibula and avulsion fracture caused by virtually the same thing. I had to have a cast for 6 weeks.

I would see if you can get a fracture boot at least to give it a rest when you need to walk. Take care x

Back in the 60s when I broke my big toe, my company sent a car to collect me because I had agreed to work instead of staying at home

I rolled up my ankle once (I was at work) and got very swollen and painfull. Boss sent me home but I could't see what good would do as I was desk based. It hurt driving as I comute but with Ibuprofen I was ok even if I looked ridiculous with my swollen ankle. So I stayed at work but not 2 injuries are the same so will not compare. Do what you think is right, if your gut tells you to stay or go home you go home. Don't listen to the tough keyboard warriors, listen to your body.

Yes my manager is aware. I’ll have to see about work, I may well borrow my mum’s car as it’s my left leg and the car is automatic!

Sorry it's fractured but I'm glad you've been seen and given advice. Make sure you let your boss know it's fractured and go really easy on it while it's healing - ankles are fickle beasts. Have they given you a boot or anything?

🤣🤣. Not sure what man you’re taking about. Years ago my husband did a similar injury to yours and he’s ankle was all swollen and black and blue and he didn’t take any time off work. Went to work in London (q hour commute) however I would say it never did heal properly and it gives him some trouble now and again.

edited to say - just seen your update my husband had a fracture too! It is really painful. I hope you heal.

Thank goodness you were seen so quickly but sorry to hear you have fractured it. Some people on this thread (and your boss) should hang their heads in shame

But you need to know presumably ? Otherwise what will happen tomorrow? Did they mean you need to keep weight off it as much as possible?

Or just not engage in any sport?

Op has just been seen at A&E and has a fracture so...

I'm glad you did go! There are times when we just need to put our personal wellbeing first even if work aren't happy. Hopefully your manager will wind their neck in now you know it's a fracture.

What does that mean for work? Can you WFH?
