So, some cities are going to introduce bans against face coverings- but it only applies to some people? Am I alone in thinking this is two-tier justice? The people in my area who wears balaclavas are wearing them to conceal their identity - mainly kids on illegal motorbikes or shoplifters. Most of the Muslim women just wear a headscarf here. I worked in a job centre for many years and if a lady wore a full face covering a female member of staff would ask her to remove her face covering in private just to check against photographic ID. It was never an issue, they were happy to confirm their identity as they weren't using their face covering to conceal criminal activity.

Well she can, in the same way she can wear a hijab, because it's currently considered against her human rights to disallow it.

I just think she shouldn't, if she is in a job where her personal religious and political beliefs should be very secondary to her role as a public servant, and she should present as completely impartial.

In Nottingham, @Ablondiebutagoody? Sea-level rise must be worse than I thought if small boats have started turning up there. I think you might be mixing up the racist thugs effectively intimidating the residents of our southern ports this weekend with petty criminals who now entirely cover their faces to avoid being spotted on CCTV.

Can you explain what you mean by "effectively" @Ablondiebutagoody ?

Did you mean 'to intimidate and frighten people whilst being too embarrassed or ashamed to show their faces' ? or something else?
As that seems quite a good reason to ban them, to me.

NHS employees shouldn't wear religious or political symbols. Many female doctors wear hijab now, but until very recently it wasn't common - most Muslim women in this country didn't wear it. I had many Muslim friends when I was at school, and none of them wore it.

Ok I disagree and think people should be allowed to wear a kippah or hijab or turban if it’s integral to their beliefs, but I accept that some might feel uncomfortable.

No. If you read properly, the poster I was addressing said that people working for the state should not wear hijabs, and I asked about that specifically. Hijabs are not a face covering. HTH.

That’s interesting. Because it doesn’t bother me at all. I live in London and I don’t care what people wear as long as I get good service really. What do you find difficult about it?

I don’t love face coverings for women. But I don’t see that these women have much in common with thugs wearing balaclavas whilst causing havoc in their communities. I see the issues as very separate.

I'm guessing the people who have a problem with it must live in "naice" areas. Young men (usually on bikes) wearing balaclavas are not comparable to ladies in hijabs ffs.
