DH wants to abort, I don’t

ccd90 · 08/09/2026 14:39

8 weeks pregnant due to contraception failing.

We have 2 DC’s, one is 3, one is 1.

Abortion was booked for Thursday then this morning I had a big bleed, hospital scanned me and saw a baby with a strong heartbeat and no reason for the big bleed.

I have come home and told DH I cannot go through with abortion. He’s not happy. He said I’m only thinking of myself, he doesn’t want the baby, he’s saying he going to close our business down as he can’t deal with the stress and he’s going to go get a “normal” job.

It’s impossible to talk to him right now.

I haven’t been 100% sure about the abortion right from the very beginning and then today I walked out of the hospital knowing I had to keep this baby otherwise I was going to break my own heart.

I am in such a shit situation. I don’t know what to do for the best. If I have the abortion, I’ll resent him and we’ll end up splitting anyway. If I carry on with the pregnancy and he’s unsupportive then I think I will end up with pre and post natal depression (I’ve had PND since baby was born a year ago which I am currently getting help for).

I wish he could just hug me and say we’ve got this, we will make it work. I’m just so upset I don’t know what to do.

Of course you feel this way, OP. You’re not a robot. You made a difficult decision and the event itself was humiliating and traumatic. Give yourself some grace.

Vile

really vile.

OP knew he hadn’t had the vasectomy and still had sex with him. They both have agency yo decide these things.

The Poor Op has had enough to deal with the last few days without people like you making things worse

What’s vile is the DH doing a sum total of absolutely nothing to prevent pregnancy, then pressuring OP into having an invasive medical procedure she was conflicted about, and then acting like a victim and wanting sympathy himself.
But it’s done now, so really all they can do as a couple is move forward, with him actually taking responsibility for his actions from now on, and getting couples’ counselling to try to work through any negative feelings. Hopefully they can put it behind them soon, and look back and genuinely feel like it was the best decision for their family.

Shame on your DH for putting you through that traumatic and humiliating experience because he was too fucking lazy to submit his vasectomy forms. I'm actually enraged. He's an utter cunt.

I hope you recover soon.

As hard as it’s been I think ye have been incredibly brave and done the right thing.

Mind yourselves, enjoy your children and move forward one step at a time. As cliche as it sounds if you continue to look back you’ll miss what’s happening now.

Mirsine · 12/09/2026 01:05

I think what you’re feeling right now is totally normal given the circumstances, please do not be hard on yourself or ashamed❤️

Your body has gone through a huge hormonal drop and change. You will definitely not be alone with how you are feeling. Visit the “pregnancy choices” board where there will be women who have gone through the same.

You made a very tough decision, which wasn’t taken lightly, and you did it for the emotional and financial welfare of yourself, your husband and your 2 children.

It is all very fresh and raw, so please access some counselling or therapy offered via the clinic you went to.

ccd90 · 12/09/2026 00:59

Thank you everyone so much.

I have counselling on Wednesday. I didn’t really realise how hard this was for DH as well, I haven’t seen him cry like that since we lost a pregnancy in between our two children. In my own fog of panic and sadness and being adamant I wanted to keep them, I realise that I never really took into consideration that this wasn’t something DH was taking lightly either and that he is grieving too. He told me tonight he wishes we had a bigger home, a bigger car, that I hadn’t of suffered with my MH like I do (for my sake) that he wishes he was able to work more but he keeps weekends free to spend with the children we have, so that we could have said yes, we never wanted a 3rd but we can deal with this. He said he’ll never forgive himself either and he’s grieving too. He also told me that a few times he’s dissolved to tears by tiredness of running a stressful business, he just hides them from me and the pressure to bring money in to give our kids and us a good life. He’s also been beside himself with worry with my PPD as I have had 2 suicide attempts before (pre children but things are different now and I would never leave my children without a mother, I love them too much to ever even consider it despite PPD taking me to all the way down to the what felt like utter hell) I guess we are both in a bad place right now but we need to support each other.

He is going to look for some couples counselling also to see if we can get some help together.

I keep looking at my children sleeping and sobbing that I will never get the chance again to celebrate a pregnancy. I am so so upset with myself. I can feel my skin crawling with anxiety and sadness.

If a baby came it would've been loved and well cared for. But your wee children sleeping in the house now would have less. Less financial stability, parents spread more thinly and less time for each of them, a less stable home environment. Yous made a very hard choice but a very brave one that seems to be based on the love yous have for the family that exists in the here and now rather than an idealised one that might not have existed. You and your husband both deserve to be kind to yourselves and each other.

Tonight is just awful, my DH and I have just cried together for hours, I just want my baby back. Why did I do this? I’m never going to forgive myself, I just want that baby back. Not a new pregnancy, I want that baby and I’m tormenting myself that it was safe and growing in me and then suddenly ripped out and chucked away with the other aborted babies. How do I even begin to forgive myself? It’s hit me like a ton of bricks. DH grieving too. What the hell have we done 😢💔

I'm so sorry, OP. This is why men shouldn't even get a vote on whether or not a woman aborts – the pressure he put on you and the negativity he expressed pushed you towards it, despite you feeling conflicted. He's a bastard for that.

But it's done now, and you both felt you were doing the right thing, and it was potentially the right thing (there is no objective right or wrong in this situation). All you can do is move forward, and focus on all the positives of not having another baby, of which there are many. Right now you're feeling a roller coaster of emotion, in part thanks to hormones, and in another week I'm sure things will settle and you'll start to feel much better. Give yourself a few days to feel sad and grieve what might have been, but don't dwell on it too much – focus on all the good things you have, and all the positives in the situation. You’ll get through this Flowers

Franpie · 11/09/2026 23:54

OP, I just wanted to add that 2 things can be true at the same time.

You can be right in your decision to have an abortion and also be incredibly sad at your loss. Being very upset and grieving doesn’t mean that you have made a mistake or done anything wrong 💐

Oh sweetheart.

I have been there and I remember the feeling well. It will pass.

Your hormones have been ramping up over the last few weeks and are now crashing down. You havent made the wrong decision, you did what you felt was right at the time, but your body needs time to catch up. The clinic you attended will have counselling available if you feel that you need help to come to terms with it.

Take care my love xx

Go back to your list.

You having a big heart, loving your children and remembering your earlier pregnancies with fondness and nostalgia doesn't change the list.

You said multiple times that it was best for your existing DC. Think about what you have done for them. You made a fucking hard decision for ALL the right reasons.

The emotions are completely valid and you should allow yourself to feel them, but everything is raw and need time.

Oh my love. You are raw and both emotional - completely understandable.

You made a difficult choice after carefully weighing up the options. It felt like the right choice this morning and it will again. You just need time.

Franpie · 11/09/2026 23:30

There were already problems with this pregnancy at a very early stage. There is no knowing how it would have turned out.

Please please please get some counselling next week. You can get through this. ❤️

And please be kind to yourselves. ❤️

I reported that post but MNHQ are ok with letting it stand because "it has been challenged". Because that will apparently make it ok for the OP to read today.

I really don't think that it is helpful to the OP to tell her that her husband 'forced' her. She did not really want the child herself, it was just very unlucky that the coil failed. The husband will now get a vasectomy.
OP, I'm so sorry that you had such a painful experience, I hope that you are resting well.

Coils are not 100% reliable, that's well known, and her DH procrastinated getting a vasectomy cause he couldn't be arsed handing the forms in and just left contraception to the woman to deal with. He was also the one who pressured for this procedure that this poor woman has had to endure. He's 100% at fault here.

Read the fucking room.

The OP had the coil. How is this her husband’s fault?

It is, ultimately, your decision as to whether to have a termination or not. Nobody can force your hand one way or the other. You are entitled to your feelings.

But that doesn’t make your DH wrong to have a different opinion and to be vehemently against having another child right now. He can’t tell you it will be fine when he clearly feels that it is a terrible idea, given your current circumstances. Three children under 5, you having PND and financial pressures is a lot. He is being clear that he feels he can’t cope with it all. Maybe he feels you won’t cope or it will worsen your PND?

If you genuinely feel you are in an emotional, practical and financial position to have this baby, without detriment to your existing children, then you should go ahead. If not, I think it is a big risk to take.

I think that you need be prepared to be a single mum, given the situation- I think either way your relationship is going to struggle to survive as one of you is going to be put in a situation that you feel is untenable.

edited to say- sorry you had such a horrible experience and I hope you recover quickly.

Edited

If you're going to bother writing such a long reply at least read the OP's updates first 🙄
