Do we actually need to get two weeks of food in?

I’ve seen some stuff about the government advising us to get a few weeks of food in the cupboards but I can’t fathom how it’d come to that in the present or near future. If we do need it, can someone tell me why? Is there seriously a concern that we won’t have food, electricity or water between now and Christmas? Aibu to think that just won’t happen?

Yes. Keep your eyes on this for developments.

This is shaping up to be a perfect shitstorm.

There was also something on the news today about how Russia appears to have been testing a new system designed to disable undersea cables without cutting them like before, without leaving any evidence.

So the could quietly disable infrastructure..

@hamsterchumpI think you have got confused. I was specifically responding to a comment about needing 2.5 litres per person just for drinking to survive!

So how much do you think we need to survive? I suppose in the event of a few days of power and water cut caused by extreme weather most people would rather be able to drink the amount they are used to drinking rather than the bare minimum survival ration of water.

UK is likely to feel it a bit more than us in Scandinavia, we have relatively low dependence on fossil fuels. But it’s not good.

Can’t change the car now he not purchased it last month 🫣

Might add some packet sauces to my shopping the just add water types. I used to buy them way back. Handy, cheap and easy to add something to a boring meal if we all end up skint 😅.

That’s a thing to be prepared for. If you end up on the breadline being able to cushion as best as possible. Not just zombies or war.

Unemployment is a very sensible thing to prep for if nothing else.

Nope.

I mean Yemen and control of the Red Sea. No one saw that coming. It's not factored in yet.

Today's news is bad news.
This is going to have an impact on inflation. It will only go one way for the foreseeable.
So if you have a little extra now, this won't be a bad thing. It will save you money in the long run.

Also. Don't have a diesel car.

I will get some bottles but I won’t be storing 12 litres per day for my family.

I think people are missing this. Water is much more important than food when it comes to health and wellbeing. The government website recommends ‘A minimum of 2.5-3 litres of drinking water per person per day is recommended by the World Health Organisation for survival. 10 litres per person per day will make you more comfortable by also providing for basic cooking and hygiene needs. ‘

This was the original post I replied it. I’m not questioning whether people do drink lots of water or not.

I tend to drink around 1.5-2 litres but don’t drink anything else, I’ve always been an outlier compared to colleagues & friends who wouldn’t drink as much water as me. If I have a bit less on a busy day I don’t get headaches etc.

If you drink up to 2 litres now then why were you so shocked by being recommended to set aside 2.5 litres a day per person in case the water goes off?

2.5 litres is not a lot more than 2 litres and some people are larger and may drink more in any case plus it would give you 500ml overage to give to a pet if you have one or wash your face and hands.

hamsterchump · 10/09/2026 12:24

We probably drink at least 2.5 litres of liquid each (remember tea and coffee, juice etc) a day now. How much do you drink then? Do you get a lot of headaches?

I wonder what she does when she wakes up with flu?

This is what I do. I will have a bit of frozen fish in the freezer and maybe pasta, rice and a couple of tins of sardines and beans in the cupboard, but I just buy as I go. I woke up with food poisoning recently and was floored. I rang my dad to go to the shop for me, but failing that I’d have asked my partner, a friend, or had what I needed delivered by Uber eats.

Especially if she lived in a "naice" area with lots of independent shops and a vibrant main shopping street. Not quite the same for the majority of people who have lost all their "local" independent shops and rely on an out of town supermarket.

I’m like this but just before the COVID shutdown in March 2020, I was talking to a colleague and she apparently had literally zero food in the house. She ate breakfast and lunch at work (bought from local supermarkets / cafes) and bought fresh food to cook for dinner every evening.

I was boggled but I suppose for a city centre dweller who liked to eat healthy and who had a tiny flat, it made sense.

Absolutely, there are many medication shortages now as it is (I think the latest were some brands of HRT and ADHD medication). Some people can switch to more generic brands quite easily but I believe not all can.

Yes, DH is on a strong iron tablet because of his chemotherapy. He's intolerant/allergic to red coloring so has always had white tablets. Been virtually impossible for the chemists to source them for several months (tried several different chemists), yet up to a few months ago, he never had any problems at all, going back the full 8 years he's been needing them. Now his heamatologist is considering an iron transfusion instead as the only alternative she can think of.

I'm not sure why we have to stock up on food to be honest. I'm 5 minutes from a supermarket which I kind of use as my pantry anyway so in an emergency I'd just pop down there and get stuff. Wouldn't store it all at home "just in case".

I’m thinking if no food is on the shelves you won’t be popping in anywhere.

I never understand how people don't naturally have at least 2 weeks of food in we could survive well over a month if we needed to the meals would be a bit random but we wouldn't starve. I don't stockpile but we always just have pasta, tins, cereal, stuff in the freezer I couldn't imagine the cupboards actually being empty

If we start getting into weeks of disruption surely prescription medicines will become a massive issue as many people will only have a weeks extra?

I still don’t understand how living on tinned food means you need 2.5 litres of drinking water a day to survive!

Same here, I have never intentionally "stock piled", but I always have plenty of long lasting food and drink in the house (i.e. no perishables) in packets, tins, cans, etc. Nothing insane like a 24 crate of baked beans, but I will have a few tins of beans, a few tins of Tuna, likewise a selection of tins of soups, a few packets of breakfast cereals, a couple of packs of pasta, a few packs of biscuits/crisps/snacks/cakes, etc. baking supplies (flour etc), Not specifically for a holocaust or missile attack or long term power outage, but just so I don't need to make rushed trips to the shops if I find myself running out. I've also got "spares" of cleaning and household supplies in the integrated garage, inc a couple of packs of large multi pack loo rolls, etc. I tend to "stockpile" stuff when things are on offer in the supermarket, more to save money than prepare for holocaust, but obviously, would mean we could last longer if something bad happened. Hopefully long enough before the authorities start rolling out support. During Storm Desmond power cut, we managed a few days without any real hardship - yes our "diet" was a bit strange for those days and "balanced meals" go out of the window, but we didn't starve and weren't driving around like headless chickens trying to find shops that were open. We also didn't need to avail ourselves of the fast food trucks that were strategically placed around the city offering free hot food and left them to those who were needy and hungry (having not made their own provisions for supply outages!!).
