What has JK Rowling said or done that’s transphobic

1000 replies

Ducketta · 08/09/2026 13:26

Another thread has said that they don’t want their thread to be derailed. Y HK Rowling and morals, so I’ll start one. Can anyone please tell me what JK Rowling has ever said or done that’s transphobic? Please be specific and outline how she has been offensive to trans people and not just been protective women and girls hard fought right to separate single sex spaces.

I cannot find anything whatsoever that she has done wrong. Nothing. Nada. And yet this JK Rowling = queen of transphobia myth persists. And it’s bloody tiresome.

She doesn’t seem to have said anything whatsoever that’s not true. So if we don’t lie we’re ‘transphobic’? I take pride in my ‘transphobia’.

I take pride in my ‘transphobia’.

Right. That would have been a distinctly more honest framing of the thread .

This thread would be a whole lot simpler if most of the folk on it said that they were transphonbic themselves and so is JK Rowling

that's the long and short of it. The conversation goes:

person A: how is JKR transphobic. She's never said anything transphobic.

Person B: She's said all kinds of things, consistently, to the effect that trans people are pretending, fraudulent, ridiculous, dangerous, and their identities are not worthy of social respect or legal protection.

person A: yeh but I agree with all that!

Ok, so.... ? You do the maths.

Edited

You want people to commit to an article of faith ‘transwomen are women’. Anything less than that is declared, by you, as transphobic. That is the long and the short of it.

Well she denies their existence on a regular basis.

I’m not a Muslim, I don’t follow Islam or believe in its teachings.

Am I denying the existence of the hundreds of millions of Muslims in the world? No, I just believe different things to them. They certainly still exist, as do all the other people whose beliefs don’t agree with mine 100% (I.e. everyone)

the fact that people have to resort to saying such obviously ridiculous things about people who disagree with their beliefs shows how flimsy the basis of those beliefs is.

I mean, ‘I believe that I am a person separate to, and a different sex from, the physical body I inhabit’ is pretty much the definition of a belief, as it exists nowhere but in the head of the person who believes it. Because like it or not, you are your body, not a passenger in it - your lungs, heart, muscles and skin are ‘you’ just as much as your brain is, and they don’t get a say about what sex they are.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 08/09/2026 18:58

I think the confusion arises from the attempt to pretend that trans and homosexual are the same as each other. Homophobia definitely has its root in fear of homosexuality, as far as I have ever been able to make out; but on the whole, people are not afraid of the trans ones. They pity most them, much of the time, and feel distaste for the bullying tactics of some of the others, but on the whole what people fear is men, not trans, and with good cause given the statistics for male violence against women and girls.

And I don't know anyone who feels fear of transmen, for all that women are supposed to be going to hound them out of public lavatories.

Is your life devoted to excluding Muslims from public life? Do you post insulting slurs about Muslims and write articles about how Muslims have attacked you?

Gender critical people are entitled to their non-scientific protected belief that gender identity isn't real, as long as their beliefs don't unreasonably impact the lives of other people. You can believe that gender identity isn't real, or that homosexuality is an ideology - but don't discriminate in a public space or advocate for changing the law. That's what Rowling has done.

I don't have an issue with people being against abortion or being against gay marriage as long as they don't try to change the law or impose their views on others.

Mouldemort · 08/09/2026 19:06

I might have known the OP was a gender critical person "just asking questions" who has "legitimate concerns."

Firstbornunicorn · 08/09/2026 19:08

It's actually really difficult to find anything transphobic if you don't believe that there's any such thing as transgender and therefore no such thing as transphobia. This thread is in such bad faith.

Yes, according to the Genderist concept of Transphobia it is transphobic to disagree with a person's belief that their mind aligns to the opposite sex rather than their own.

Interestingly, that this requires that the Genderist impose their own beliefs about the gender identities of other people based on their sex is not considered by Genderists to be an issue despite being exactly the same thing.

Feminists tend to disagree with that.

According to Genderism, that makes Feminists Transphobic.

You do the maths.

FlirtsWithRhinos · 08/09/2026 19:21

Obviously, no one is excluding trans people from public life simply because we don't play along with their sexist ideas about men's minds and women's minds being the thing that determines which toilet someone should use rather than simple sex, any more than we exclude manosphere types from public life when we chose not to meet their expectations about how women should be treating them.

BieresDeLaMeuse · 08/09/2026 19:23

Mouldemort · 08/09/2026 16:10

You can find tons of examples, but all the transphobes simply say the transphobia is not transphobic, because no one wants to acknowledge their own bigotry. Many people including her have been radicalised and "I agree with JK Rowling" doesn't suggest that she isn't transphobic, simply that they are. Her latest glorious effort is to body shame and post an up-skirt a trans woman which apparently is strictly legal.

The same image I believe that was shared by India Willoughby three years before (with a very, very healthy dose of body shaming). I assume you have a LOT to say about that level of transphobia?

What has JK Rowling said or done that’s transphobic
FlirtsWithRhinos · 08/09/2026 19:34

Sex exists. This is a fact.

Gender identity exists at least in the sense that some people feel strongly they experience it. This is also a fact.

No one has yet explained why the latter should replace the former in law and social conventions. Until that case can be made, Genderism remains simply one ideology among many.

Homosexuality is a fact.

However, if one decided the world should be rearranged not just to accept Homosexual relationships and encounters as fine and valid things just as we do hetero, but to priotise them over hetero to the degree they have more weight and more respect than hetero (or indeed vice versa) then that would be an ideology. Only then would being gay start to actually approach equivalence with Genderist demands.

Gender critical people aren’t trying to exclude trans people from public life. How dramatic. They just ask that they use single sex spaces according to their sex. If that’s too traumatic, then yes, the trans person is going to have to stay at home, but I don’t think it’s too much to ask, do you?

Then we are as one, effectively. I don't have an issue with people presenting themselves however they feel most comfortable with as long as they don't try to change the law or impose their views on others. Or as JK Rowling put it, "Dress however you please. Call yourself whatever you like. Sleep with any consenting adult who’ll have you. Live your best life in peace and security."

I just wish that people wouldn't try to change the law, or worse, pretend the law says the opposite of what it does and then, when called out on that, declare their intention of breaking the law and egg others on to do the same. Men trying to impose their views on women is old hat and frankly not a surprise, but men who yearn to be women while at the same time trying to strip women of their rights is frankly extraordinary.

Is this some new form of masochism?

So people should stop trying to change the law to allow males access womens spaces, right? Or is it a one way street?

What law do you think JKR tried to change?

Well no. It’s trans activists who consistently advocated for changing the law. Campaigned to change the Equality Act. Campaigned to change the Gender Recognition Act. All based on their ideology. What Rowling has done is advocated that the law is enforced as it stands.

Are you denying that Muslims exist? Because that's what JK Rowling is doing when she refers to trans women as "a man in a dress", etc.

ScrollingLeaves · 08/09/2026 22:54

Lacksie · 08/09/2026 13:37

Rowling holds gender-critical beliefs under which sex is immutable and trans women remain male, campaigns to ensure that law and institutions treat sex rather than gender identity as decisive in all contexts, and repeatedly has used language that portrays trans female identity as false, performative or male intrusion. People who define transphobia as including systematic invalidation or denigration of transgender identities therefore have substantial direct evidence for calling her transphobic.

trans female identity

Being female is a biological state that cannot be acquired through identifying with it.

Pingponghavoc · 08/09/2026 23:04

Are you denying that Muslims exist? Because that's what JK Rowling is doing when she refers to trans women as "a man in a dress", etc.

'Doesnt exist' is such a confusing phrase.

Everyone can see a trans identifying person, no one is claiming they dont exist.

What JKR doesn't believe is that people can change sex. She also believes that single sex spaces need to be protected.

We can all agree that a group of people exist. It's the spaces they are entitled to use that is in dispute. Saying anyone is denying their existence is just not true.

backformoreofthesame · 08/09/2026 23:15

Muslims exist

someone putting on typical muslim clothes and saying they were Muslim wouldn’t necessarily be accepted as Muslim by the Muslim community though. They might expect that person to have knowledge of the Koran and study of the religion. They would be expected to have certain beliefs. If they carried on drinking and eating pork and going to catholic mass then Muslims might feel insulted.

and that’s where we are. They wear the clothes and still behave like men.

but it’s worse than that. At least being Muslim is a belief. This is actually more like a blond fair person claiming to be black. Your skin colour isn’t a belief. It’s objective.

Pingponghavoc · 08/09/2026 23:19

Redefining words and calling people 'phobic' for not playing along is not working. Its not getting the law changed to allow TW into womens spaces.

Its impossible include 'identity' with sex and provide services. TRA want the government to change the law include TW as women/TM as men, but never have a rational argument for how that can be achieved. Thats why they have to accuse people of phobias and denying their existence.

cisisaslur · 08/09/2026 23:34

Nothing - everything is deemed to be transphobic these days

pulpJarvis · 09/09/2026 05:52

I’ve been pondering this as I lay awake menopausely last night. I said don’t engage with your son’s girlfriend as you won’t change her mind. But she has a right to a voice and thoughts. I probably wouldn’t agree with everything (anything) she says but there are reasons why she’s saying it…that will matter to her.

TerfOnATrain · 09/09/2026 06:19

Well it depends what transphobia is defined as, according to TransActual.org misgendering is transphobic, along with lots of other stuff, some valid and some not. IMO misgendering is telling the truth, JKR has told the truth about India Willoughby being a man, he is. So I guess that makes us both transphobic according to some idiots.

Trans people don’t get to change language and meanings to suit their own wants, refusing to comply with that is not transphobic it’s petulant entitlement on the side of the trans.
