What has JK Rowling said or done that’s transphobic

1000 replies

Ducketta · 08/09/2026 13:26

Another thread has said that they don’t want their thread to be derailed. Y HK Rowling and morals, so I’ll start one. Can anyone please tell me what JK Rowling has ever said or done that’s transphobic? Please be specific and outline how she has been offensive to trans people and not just been protective women and girls hard fought right to separate single sex spaces.

I cannot find anything whatsoever that she has done wrong. Nothing. Nada. And yet this JK Rowling = queen of transphobia myth persists. And it’s bloody tiresome.

No it wasn't the case that every service in Scotland let men in. Some services in other areas remained resolutely for women only. But the only rape crisis service in Edinburgh refused to maintain any single-sex services, and it refused to guarantee that if a survivor asked to see a woman counsellor then she would see a woman, or even to tell survivors what sex their counsellor would be if they asked.

So JKR set up Beira's place - run by women, staffed by women, and for women only. And paid for out of her own pocket.

Meanwhile Edinburgh Rape Crisis still exists and is still publicly funded and if anyone needs a rape crisis service that includes men then they can still use it. JKR hasn't taken away anything from anyone.

Those threads are started for actual discourse and not disingenuous. Maybe if you stop worrying about strangers genitals you’ll be able to discern the difference.

I'll worry about strange men's genitals when they're waving them about (yes they do) or wanking with them (yes this too also happens - there is self reported footage) in women's single sex spaces as much as I damn well please.

And, no. It's not ok if they don't actually behave this badly. They are still a man in a woman's space where they have no fucking right to be.

Ducketta · 09/09/2026 16:01

I started this thread and it’s taught me a few things:

People that think JKR is transphobic do so on the basis that she thinks transwomen are men, and that’s what’s transphobic.

People who say she is ‘removing trans people’s existence’ mean that she’s suggesting transwomen should use the gents when out and about in public, not the ladies.

’Marginalised’ means pushed into the margins, ignored, which I think applies to abused women far more than men.

People who think she’s transphobic think that we all have a gender identity. I’m not sure about anyone else but I sure as heck don’t! Maybe I lost it form the back of the sofa.

Interesting thread.

I support her broad opinions on trans matters. If people consider her offensive because of these (ie because she believes that trans women are men and that female/woman should be defined by biological sex alone) then I don't understand that.

Where I think she borders on offensive is her sometimes gloating tone, and the apparent glee with which she celebrates some things which are obviously difficult for some people to manage. There is a more gracious way to behave than she sometimes manages.

Having said that, the vitriol she receives is way out of proportion and far more offensive.

I regular see nonsense posts on Facebook saying that she funds anti trans charities, it's just men wanting to silence a strong successful woman with a point of view.
A board game café in our village put out a big sanctimonious Facebook post about how they have removed all Harry Potter board games and books from the shelves as not to "trigger and cause upset" and how "only good hearted people" are welcome. So now my child who is a Harry Potter fan feels that they deem her as a "not good hearted person" because she used to go in there and play the Harry Potter games. They have a big virtue signalling rainbow on the door saying "this is a safe space" A safe space only for those that share their views as in their view any Harry Potter fans are clearly "not good hearted people" I am not happy they've made my young daughter question what kind of person she is for liking Harry Potter and part of me wants to report them to Trading Standards because I believe the owners are using their beliefs to cherry pick customers, plus on the Facebook post they said it was not up for discussion and they don't entertain Bigots, so I couldn't even tell them how they made my daughter feel as they'd have just told me I am a Bigot.

This is so sad Sad
I have a 9yo who loves Harry Potter and it's lovely to enjoy it all over again with them. With the recent Audible production (which is excellent!) and the upcoming new TV adaptation, there has already been a lot of talk about "boycotting" HP because of JKR's alleged transphobia. It's all utter nonsense.
Did you know that Audible used a trans woman actor as the voice actor for the female school nurse, it's ridiculous and very ironic!

I am not sure what you want from this question?

Of course you won’t get an answer as you likely have a different view on what being trans means than people who think JK is transphobic.

ForGreenHiker
Trans people are a marganised group by any realistic study or metric. Pretending they’re not because “they’re just men”, is transphobia.

I think it would be more accurate to call it by its proper name, androphobia. Because what women who suffer from it are afraid of is not the poor (rather pitiful) actual trans women; it is the predatory men who use "trans" or "identifying as female" as a smokescreen to gain access to vulnerable women or children in what are supposed to be single sex spaces, and commit criminal violence against the women and children concerned.

I would seriously have thought that anyone transgender ought to be horrified by these predators, at least as much as women are, and be vocal in their condemnation of them, because it is these criminal mavericks, not the women who quite reasonably dislike and fear them, who make the position of every other person calling him- or her- self trans more open to condemnation and to mistrust.

I know loads of nice trans people, but as someone who has been sexually assaulted 3 times I sure as heck don’t want men in single sex spaces. And the men in Edinburgh rape crisis centre stories, and what Sandie Peggie had to put up with are totally chilling.

Look.

Genderism is fundamentally sexist. There is no getting away from that.

Firstly, because the belief that the thing that makes men and women different is mental rather than physical requires that you believe some ways of thinking and feeling are only correct for "women" and others are only correct for "men".

And secondly, because it requires that the female half (and indeed the male half) of humanity cannot have language that refers to us and to us alone simply for the commonality of our sex.

And this even though being female has had serious consequences, physical, social and economic, that still affect how we experience ourselves within society today.

Which is crazy when you think about it! I mean, we have words to differentiate between various shades of ginger hair, but apparently not something as significant as the basis on which we have been abused, belittled, marginalised, even at times been legally literal propery of men!

Now sure, you can hide the sexism by pretending that "men" and "women" don't refer to sex snd claiming something that impacts on the female (or indeed male) half of humanity can't therefore be sexist because it isn't hurting "women" (or men) unfairly, but that just moves words around. It doesn't change which people feel the impact.

That is what people are reacting to.

Not some irrational desire to hurt trans people by pointing out that their gender does not override their sex, but the need to protect the reality of sex in law, society and culture because sex has consequences.

It isn't fair to just bundle female people legally, socially or culturally in with whatever it is mentally that trans women feel makes them a "woman" (or assume we are mentally outside whatever it is that trans men feel makes them a "man") without bothering to find out how we see ourselves or to consider what changing the basis on which we exist legally, socially and culturally means for us.

And really, all this can be solved in an instant by simply recognising that if sex and gender are different, as trans people themselves clearly prove they are, they should simply just have different names. Leave "man" and "woman", "boy" and "girl" to refer simply to sex and coin new terms, new concepts, to capture and understand and support this thing that is "Gender".

And not because that's the "right" meaning (words are just words) but simply because that was the meaning when those words were used to write our laws and histories and stories. It's the meaning those words had when Feminists came together to understand our shared experiences and the social structures that created them, so it's the most practical way forward. Otherwise we'd have to rewrite all those things to clarify they do and always did refer to the female half of humanity not sinply those who feel a commonality of a certain gender.

So please. Spare me this superficial idea that this is all about being nasty to transwomen. This isn't about them at all really. It's about the right of women to exist in our own right, retain our own language that links us to each other and to our history and our rights, and to ne allowed to describe our own experiences and needs and self knowledge entirely outside of a man's frankly irrelevant image of what he thinks we are.

No one is saying trans people can't be who they are. We are just saying don't use the language of sex to name it because that has consequences far bigger than trans people's feelings, however genuine they may be.

Excellent post.

Why are you so keen to let male people watch women undress?

Scout2016 · 08/09/2026 17:04

You do know that photo is easily findable?
Freda Wallace on a platform for a panel discussion, sat down in knee high boots, fishnets and a very tiny skirt, with one leg resting on the knee of the other - not cross legged but leg raised so more can be seen than anyone wants to. It would have been impossible to take many photos of him at that event that weren't showing his crotch area, he arrived wearing next to little then got progressively drunker and sloppy in his body language.

That is not upskirting and it's offensive to suggest it is. Makes an absolute mockery of the damage done to those who really do suffer these crimes.

Edited

That photo was all over the internet for anyone to see.
The video was extraordinary.
The bit where Peter Tatchell was desperately trying to stop Freda from drinking any more wine was priceless.

It was his attempting to hound her out of her job for not wanting him to watch her cleaning up her clothes after a heavy period had leaked into them that made me feel unhappy about that case.

Well, that and his lies on oath, and falsification of evidence.

As far as I could make out, she never tried at any point to interfere with or prevent his being employed; she just didn't want him there when she was using the lavatory facilities to cope with an embarrassing and PRIVATE matter.

Of course men don't like it they never do.

Amen to that. It’s always scream at the nearest woman, never deal with the problem that is men, isn’t it.

Still no serious investigations into exactly why so many girls don’t want to be female and constitute the vast majority of trans, f to m transitions, either. Just the screaming from men who have found a new way to force women…. I’ll just leave that at that, actually, because that is all that it is about. Men using force on women.

This thread would be a whole lot simpler if most of the folk on it said that they were transphonbic themselves and so is JK Rowling

that's the long and short of it. The conversation goes:

person A: how is JKR transphobic. She's never said anything transphobic.

Person B: She's said all kinds of things, consistently, to the effect that trans people are pretending, fraudulent, ridiculous, dangerous, and their identities are not worthy of social respect or legal protection.

person A: yeh but I agree with all that!

Ok, so.... ? You do the maths.

Edited

Ooooh you cheeky wee devil.
To paraphrase:
"JK said all transwomen are stinky poo heads and you all agreed you transphobes"

That only works if you can cite the posts where she actually said that and where posters on here quoted those words and said they agreed with them.

Unfortunately the words you have claimed were said in either case were inaccurate to put it mildly.
They are, at best, your own twisted interpretation of what's been said, or a completely fabricated string of corn dollies.

Nice try though.

TL/DR
JK never said those things so no one can have agreed with them.
