What has JK Rowling said or done that’s transphobic

1000 replies

Ducketta · 08/09/2026 13:26

Another thread has said that they don’t want their thread to be derailed. Y HK Rowling and morals, so I’ll start one. Can anyone please tell me what JK Rowling has ever said or done that’s transphobic? Please be specific and outline how she has been offensive to trans people and not just been protective women and girls hard fought right to separate single sex spaces.

I cannot find anything whatsoever that she has done wrong. Nothing. Nada. And yet this JK Rowling = queen of transphobia myth persists. And it’s bloody tiresome.

Tbh, your posts just show your ignorance of the Sandie Peggie case, as that is exactly what it was about, amongst broader issues - the tribunal found that her employer harassed her because she complained about a man being in the female changing room, and they continued to permit him to be in there, while she and other women were in there undressing.

Furthermore, Dr Upton was malicious enough to complain about her refusing to dress in front of him, and NHS Fife sided with him, disciplining Peggie for removing herself from a situation where she would have to expose her undressed body to him. That created a situation where she had to undress in front of a man or be disciplined.

It's not so long ago that a man in a female changing room would have been swiftly and correctly identified as a flasher or a Peeping Tom, or both. Thankfully, we are now returning to this state of sanity.

To be honest your posts aren't worthy of a response. This did make me chuckle, coming as it did from somebody who drops a lol as a response to a serious point, but I respond to you more so that others can be informed:

Indeed.

"Furthermore, Dr Upton was malicious enough to complain about her refusing to dress in front of him, and NHS Fife sided with him, disciplining Peggie for removing herself from a situation where she would have to expose her undressed body to him. (absolute madness) That created a situation where she had to undress in front of a man or be disciplined." (more madness)

"It's not so long ago that a man in a female changing room would have been swiftly and correctly identified as a flasher or a Peeping Tom, or both. Thankfully, we are now returning to this state of sanity." Indeed, thankfully some sanity is gradually returning.

@Lacksie Gettting a sensible person to believe in your far fetched and evidence free description of gender identity is a hard enough request.

Getting us to accept that, and also that the conclusions from not believing it amount to hatred and bigotry, is I think impossible.

I genuinely believe gender ideology is now a lost cause in the UK, and in the rest of the world its just a matter of time. Trans activists should pivot towards campaigning for realistic goals that don't claim the impossible or cast dissenters as bigots.

Actually, the question is more complicated than that.

Which female does he feel like? Because every single one of them feels a bit different, I would bet: I have no idea how (for instance) Meghan Markle feels, or the lovely woman who does blood-tests at the local surgery, or any other woman on the planet except me. I doubt any of them know how I feel, either.

Oh yes, good point. @Lacksie any answer?

I think you meant "tautological" but I read it as "toiletological" and honestly, that's probably the best term I have ever heard for TRA logic 😂

"I need to use the ladies bogs becauae I am a woman, and I am a woman because look, I use the ladies bogs" is pretty much what it boils down to really.

Haha... I would claim its a typo but actually it turns out I just don't know how to spell that word. I decline to try again. Instead I plan to self identify as dyslexic and claim disability discrimination.

🤣

It's funny because it's a patently ridiculous, absurd and outrageous attempt at a straw man.

Said no one ever.

To be honest your posts aren't worthy of a response. But I thought I'd give them a lol.

You not heard of the nurses then who were forced to change in front of trans woman (man)! They won the case and were forced to use the changing room with a man despite many concerns

I've genuinely tried to understand where trans activists are coming from, but I can't get past their logic.

I keep seeing videos reasoning that anyone can be a woman because there is no one defining biological trait that makes a woman. Some women can't have children, don't have ovaries, don't have periods, have extra sex chromosomes etc. Therefore if there isn't one defining physical way to dictate a woman that means anyone can be a woman.

There's lots of things wrong with that logic, but regardless if we follow it through to the logical end point. That also means that anyone can be a man. So why does a man ever feel the need to say they are actually a woman instead. If a man can have e.g. breasts why doesn't a trans woman who has top surgery just become a man with breasts. A man can wear dresses or have long hair or go horse riding.

I saw someone asking trans women to define what it means to be a woman without a totilogical argument and they were entirely unable to do so.

I think you meant "tautological" but I read it as "toiletological" and honestly, that's probably the best term I have ever heard for TRA logic 😂

What fo you understand Gender Identity as?

If we don't understand where they are coming from, we are just talking over each other.

I understand it as someone's self Identity that shouldn't have any impact on my life.

Gender ideology says that I should recognise it.

Many Gender identity supporters believe that both Identity and sex is important. But their obvious blindspot, from what I understand, is they dont want to use sex for safeguarding.

They dont believe that a man undressing and watching women undress without consent it a safeguarding issue.

What fo you understand Gender Identity as?
I don't - gender identity is not a thing - a man pretending to be a woman is nothing but a man pretending to be a woman.

If we don't understand where they are coming from,
If they carry on claiming that A=B (a man = a woman) then they are coming from a position not based on truth

I understand it as someone's self Identity that shouldn't have any impact on my life.
But that is not what they want though is it? They want it to impact your life, they want you to change how you speak / how you believe / who you undress with / etc.

if it were only someone's internal self identity then there would be no debate, there would be no need to call it 'female identity' or 'trans woman' it wouldn't matter - but your compliance is needed to validate it, your agreement with their 'self-identity' is a requirement all along - so it is not self identity, it is compelled communal identity.

if self-identity could be whatever we want and not affect anyone, then I could identify as Napoleon Bonaparte - but rightly that tends to lead to the lunatic asylum, I could identify as a cat, which would rightly be seen as absurd - because we recognise as society that

  • you can't simply identify as what you want - you are what you are born
  • your self-identity affects others

Gender ideology says that I should recognise it.
Gender ideology is rather bossy and dictatorial isn't it...

But their obvious blindspot, from what I understand, is they dont want to use sex for safeguarding.
that they don't wish to use sex as safeguarding is at the heart of their choices - Dr Upton - a man wanted to be in a place where women had to watch him undress, for power and intimidation reasons or for sexual reasons we might not know - but both are clearly safeguarding issues.

the whole heart of this issue for some (almost entirely male) 'trans' people is that safeguarding gets in the way of their desires - so by confusing the language and claiming to be the opposite sex, they get around safeguarding... if it wasn't for the claim that they are female / women - no man would be allowed into a female space - it would be seen as a safeguarding issue...

it is not a blindspot in any way at all - it is absolutely 100% deliberate.

If Dr Upton were a genuine woman and entitled to be in that changing room - he would have been sensitive and moved when he saw distress - he didn't because his remaining there and requiring a woman to undress in front of him was a part of what he chose - not a blindspot - absolutely deliberate.

Pingponghavoc · 10/09/2026 13:03

I think gender identity ignores safeguarding, dignity, and consent.

Supporters talk about violence in so much as mens experience of other men, maybe 'safety' as hurt emotionally. But nothing else.

I dont know if safeguarding is ignored because its inconvenient to the aims, or its the aim in itself? Probably doesnt matter because the consequences are the same.

Being truthful about sex and having consent is critical for safeguarding, theres no getting away from it. Just because men with gender identity may be at risk of violence doesnt mean their sex is irrelevant and consent of others isn't needed. Vulnerable people can be abusers themselves.

Gender supporters dont want to discuss this.

Its something that cannot be ignored because its there for a reason, and if the rules arent followed, its only a matter of time before failures are exposed.

Its similar to the question of sport. Gender supporter used to claim that men in women's sport was ok, some still do. But reality happens and now they have to back down and claim its one of the increasing situations where sex does matter.

In sorry but to me this all sounds like a huge pile of bullshitty nonsense made up to justify men with mental health problems and men who are just plain perverts trying to get into women’s single sex spaces. There is nothing else whatsoever scientific peer reviewed research that agrees the whole concept of gender to be anything than nonsense.

It's like when George Lucas decided to make Star Wars pre-sequels and had to invent all these desperate ret con explanations for stuff that they just shoved in as taken for granted in the original films 😂

We all know the real story is

  1. Society had a bunch of sexist ideas about who women are and how we dress, think and behave
  2. Some men found pretending to be a woman by adopting those sexist tropes gave them some sort of mental comfort or release. (The reasons for this and the form of the release are varied and not relevant here)
  3. The idea that women might be more than or other than those socially constructed tropes of womahood wasn't really on anyone's radar so everyone understood that a man living as "a woman" basically meant wearing dresses, simpering, and going "in with the girls" when there was a split between men and women
  4. As society has become more tolerant and open to differences rather than there being one "normal" way to live, some people have decided that living as "a woman" should give one the right to actually "be" a woman in a legal sense as well as a social one
  5. Unfortunately for said men, the same tolerance and openmindedness has also challenged and rejected all those old sexist ideas about who women are on which their "living as a woman" was based.

So now Genderists face this terrible irony, which is that just as society might be able to give them exactly what they want, they can no longer justify or define it as what it really is because the underlying sexism is no longer acceptable to say out loud 😂

So they have all these hints about "social constellations" and "a person's own awareness of themself as male or female that isn't just because they know what body they have", like when a polite racist makes all these nudge-nudge hints about "you know, those people" because they know they can't say it out loud but they assume everyone else is still thinking the same racist thoughts they are.

Hence all the flailing around with handwavy ideas that in future we will find neurochemical reasons that some men want to wear dressses and be in women's spaces rather than accept the very obvoious Occam's razor explanation that - some men want to wear dresses and be in women's spaces!

Rollingpinofdoom · 10/09/2026 13:00

@Lacksie sorry to tag you again, if males can feel female or live as female, at what point do enough males feel female to make those feelings male feelings. For example, if lots of males wear lipstick because they believe that is living as a female, at what point does lipstick become something males wear also so it becomes unisex?

Same for my cat. Maybe he’s a transhuman who just happens to have the body of a cat. @Lacksie you’re a believer in feelings shaping reality, if a male can be a woman because he believes he is, can my cat be a human? If not, why not? He thinks he is, he displays some human coded behaviours and he sometimes wears human clothes.

Not at all. There is no consensus on, or objective way to, “feel female”. Most of us don’t walk around consciously “feeling female” at all.

But you are aware that you are female. For you, that is simply a completely unremarkable fact about your body and social identity, so it does not present itself as some distinct or noticeable “feeling”.

Gender identity does not require some universal female sensation, personality or set of stereotypes. It is simply a person’s own awareness of themself as male or female.

For a trans woman, despite having been born with male anatomy, they recognise themselves to be female. That may sound impossible or counterintuitive to you — I understand why it does. But there is nothing neurologically or cognitively impossible about it at all.

it is a real phenomenon, with complex biological, developmental and psychological roots. It is not simply an opinion or belief someone has chosen to adopt, as many on mumsnet believe.

But you’re failing to come up with anything tangible that anyone more that you can refinish as being a thing. And that will be why I think gender identity is nonsense. And they will be why you think it’s not, cause you can see something that I can’t. So gender critical people - like JKR - take an absolute hammering for not seeing something that they’re blind to or may not even exist. Does that sound fair?

And can we agree that single sex spaces should be divided by biological sex only, as per the law? It’s they only way for women to maintain their privacy, dignity and safety.

they recognise themselves to be female...
Based on my post above, and any other evidence you wish to bring - what does it mean to recognise yourself to be female when you are born a man and are therefore male not female?

they recognise themselves to be female...
But no-one else does - because they are not.
As a biological man they are male - that is what those words mean, a few people don't have the right to change the meaning of the language to suit their purposes!
They are not female and can not be female, because the only requirement to be a female is to be born a girl and girls are not born with male anatomy.

despite having been born with male anatomy
Do you not see the contradiction in your own words - anatomy is only defined as male or female based on whether it is attached to a male (man) or female (woman) - so if this mythical 'trans woman' has 'male' anatomy that must be because they are male. If they were 'female' then by definition, any anatomy they have would be defined as female anatomy.

That may sound impossible or counterintuitive to you
simple - because it is impossible

But there is nothing neurologically or cognitively impossible about it at all.
Might be the most accurate thing you have posted - this 'trans woman' (man) who has 'male anatomy' is clearly a man - that they 'think' that they are female is clearly of the mind and when the mind becomes fixated on something inaccurate / wrong / clearly impossible, and then guides the person to spend money, emotions, life efforts etc.on pursuing the impossible; then it i clear that this is an issue of the mind not reality

Word to the wise - you would be more successful challenging if you could make an actual robust argument for what you think this Gender thing is and how it justifies the demands being made, than playing this silly game of "Oh but it's not that, it's not that, it's not that"

They dont believe that a man undressing and watching women undress without consent it a safeguarding issue.

In a similar vein, I would love someone from the Genderist camp to explain how it is consistent and logical that

  • one can never assume someone's gender identity based on their body, appearance, presentation, history or behaviour, only on their own declared self identification
  • Women are justified in objecting to a man's hands on her for intimate care or procedures, or a man's eyes on her body when changing, or a man's body in a woman-only space,
  • A person can have the exact same body, appearance, presentation, history or behaviour as the man above and do exactly the same thing but if they happen to have a Gender Identity of woman rather than man, the [natal] woman will of course feel the same ease she has with another woman even though said person's Gender has not been disclosed?

Because 1 and 3 seem totally contradictory to me. How does the woman somehow intuitively know the second male person is trans such that she does not feel the same emotions she would with a man?

(This is of course without asking the fundamental question of how does gender in the mind change the hands of the body?)

Should have gone out of my way to correct them ?

But you do know that you are female. You may not walk around consciously “feeling female”, because for you there is no conflict there — it is simply an unremarkable fact about who you are.

However, if everyone around you suddenly insisted you were male, called you a man and treated you as one, I suspect you would very quickly become aware that this did not correspond to your own understanding of yourself.

The fact that something is normally effortless and taken for granted does not mean it is absent.

I do because I got boobs and periods as a teen. That’s because my body is female. There is nothing else whatsoever that made me feel female. It’s just the workings of my biology.
