What has JK Rowling said or done that’s transphobic

1000 replies

Ducketta · 08/09/2026 13:26

Another thread has said that they don’t want their thread to be derailed. Y HK Rowling and morals, so I’ll start one. Can anyone please tell me what JK Rowling has ever said or done that’s transphobic? Please be specific and outline how she has been offensive to trans people and not just been protective women and girls hard fought right to separate single sex spaces.

I cannot find anything whatsoever that she has done wrong. Nothing. Nada. And yet this JK Rowling = queen of transphobia myth persists. And it’s bloody tiresome.

To be clear none of that was written, edited or in anyway put through AI.

Sure buddy. You’ll be saying males can be women next 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

“the framing of “sex” and “gender” as fundamentally distinct and separable constructs””

They are though, aren’t they? I was taught that all the way back in school. Sex is what is observed at birth (the biological reality) and gender is how we identify or ‘feel’.

I know some feminists reject the idea of gender all together (I don’t) but I’m wondering, do you not see sex and gender as distinct and separable? If they aren’t, how do you explain people having a different sex to their gender?

No that's far too simplistic.

Of course.

"gender critical theory/ feminism" is a political movement which gained traction in the UK in the late 2010s around the time of the proposed reforms to the gender recognition act. "gender critical" feminists argued that replacing the "objective" construct of "sex" with the "subjective" construct of "gender" in law, was a threat to the “sex”-based rights of women and girls, compromising fairness, service provision, accurate data collection, dignity, safety, and protections against discrimination and violence.

The problem with gender critical theory/ feminism is that it rests of a number of overly simplistic and ultimately erroneous core assumptions that result in contradictions. The most important of these are: the positing of “sex” as an objective, fixed and unitary measure, and second (relatedly), the framing of “sex” and “gender” as fundamentally distinct and separable constructs.

Are you saying sex is not immutable? Or rather is that what your AI is saying? We have posters in this thread saying sex and gender are different. Are you saying they are not? Do you (or your AI) have any examples of a human that has changed sex?

Thechickenhasmypillow · 10/09/2026 14:43

Any that don't involve AI?

A really good way to make sure ones arguments against something are robust is to be able to explain the something from the position of its supporters.

I would love to see you give a clear overview of what you actually believe gender critical "theory", as you call it, to be.

Are you able to do that?

Of course.

It's mocking and deriding trans experience.

Like when TIM claim they have periods? Or that they are women because they want to be fucked. That’s what Andrea Chu claimed. That he was a woman because he wanted to be fucked. How is that not mocking and deriding women….

DialSquare · 10/09/2026 14:31

Lacksie · 10/09/2026 14:29

It's mocking and deriding trans experience.

No it’s not. Again, where is your empathy for the women who will self exclude from their own single sex spaces because people like you keep shilling for men to use them?

FlirtsWithRhinos · 10/09/2026 14:31

Lacksie · 10/09/2026 13:40

Thanks for this very sensible, balanced and thoughtful perspective. I am not "gender critical" - I think the theory is entirely misguided, but I really appreciate the humanity and balance here and the recognition that being trans is a real and legitimate experience, and the "othering" and hatred expressed towards trans people on mumsnet is truly disturbing.

No trans women are not "mocking women" for being trans and describing their real experience of transness.

This is another great example of the transphobia. Utter denial, dismissal and contempt for the real experience of being trans. Portrayal of trans people as inherently threatening to women just for being trans, etc etc etc.

It's exhausting. Just say it with your chest - you don't believe being trans is real, you don't believe it's legitimate, you have utter contempt for people who (in your mind) "claim to" have this experience.

Stop complaining when other posters point out that you feel that way, everything you write makes it abundantly clear!

I tried saying it with my chest. Unfortunately being rather well endowed, it came out as gibberish. I’ll just use my fingers to type instead. I mean, there was that bloke who played the piano with his penis, but boobs just don’t have the finesse.

Lacksie · 10/09/2026 14:29

DialSquare · 10/09/2026 14:26

Nope. It’s saying that just because a man really wants it, it doesn’t make it right. Men should not be using female single sex provision no matter how they identify.
Why don’t you give a shit about the women who are not able to use mixed sex provision?

It's mocking and deriding trans experience.

oh no! Someone on the internet thinks I’m mean! They are indeed mocking women. Taking women’s struggles and appropriating them. They will never be women. At best they are men donning the persona of what they think a woman is.

But not transmen. So not all trans people then. So not transphobic. As I previously stated, it’s about men. Thanks for clarifying.

So men then? The only criteria to be a “transwoman” is to be a man. Women cannot be transwomen. Therefore the quote is accurate.

Rollingpinofdoom · 10/09/2026 14:13

Lacksie · 10/09/2026 14:06

Not really.

I think everyone can agree that making death and rape threats is beyond sickening and quite rightly - criminal. That surely goes without saying.

What is much more remarkable is the way that mumsnetters ridicule, belittle, deride and attack trans people on masse on these threads, and then protest that they aren't a bit transphobic!

So let me get this right, women demanding their sex based rights is on a par with death and rape threats? If trans rights are no threat to women’s rights, why are women defending their sex based rights transphobic?

Lacksie · 10/09/2026 14:10
