Was I in the wrong or was DSis being a bridezilla?

Throwaway username for this!

My DSis had an abroad wedding this summer. We were over there for a few days before, during which there was a couple of different ‘events’ including a welcome dinner.

At this dinner, one of her bridesmaids was having what I deemed to be an inappropriate conversation. In ear shot of this, were various older family members who wouldn’t have wanted to hear such (sexual) comments. I followed the bridesmaid to the bathroom and politely suggested she reined in the conversation topics. Which she did.

This was a few days before the wedding. The next morning, my sister sent me a series of shitty messages suggesting I was over reacting, there was drink involved so there would obviously be ‘adult conversations’ and she didn’t appreciate me causing potential issues before her Wedding. I explained why I pulled her up and left it at that. Not all family members present were drinking.

Post Wedding, she is now incredibly off with me and actively avoiding having to spend any time with me.

I have consulted others who agree with what I did but I would welcome some impartial feedback. Should I have left it given the circumstances, or was I right to have said something?

There was references to anal sex and a story about her going to a works party and sleeping with a colleague, then shortly after also going back to her room with another colleague who unaware of the previous encounter went down on her.

To be fair, I do see your point now.

Loub1987 · 08/09/2026 14:21

I don’t see why it is your role to police what people can and can’t talk about. If you had children there that’s different but older people are quite able to speak for themselves. You are not the morality or etiquette police.

Also following someone you don’t know well into the bathroom to challenge them is weird.

ThePurpleShark · 08/09/2026 14:20

I had diners where I had to listen to women fully detailed birth stories (still traumatised by my one, do not want or care to hear yours, thanks), never-ending rambling about very average kids seen as geniuses by their parents, brands of wallpapers and paints.. I could go on all night

I take the anal sex story frankly As long as you don't replicate when Harry met Sally, don't show the video of the sexual encounter, it's such a non issue😂

RosesAndHellebores · 08/09/2026 14:17

Wasn't it enough that the oldies must already ha e formed an opinion about her?

JudgeJ · 08/09/2026 13:29

We older people often have poor hearing, I hope she was speaking load enough for anyone interested to hear!

😂

Makepumpseleven · 08/09/2026 14:15

Utterly grim story that paints the BM in a terrible light.

As to whether i’d have said anything, it would depend:

  1. Did you already know the BM?
  2. Does your sister know what the story was and who overheard?

Sounds like your intentions were good and a bit of an overreaction from sister.

I don't know any of the people in the story, but is it possible the OP has a tendency to butt in where she's not wanted and her sister is sick of it?

It's a bit odd to interfere with your sister's friend (bridesmaid even!) during her wedding trip.

I can't imagine my siblings having a go at my best friends during one of my events! (wedding, birthdays..) .

If I was an “older family member” I’d have thought you patronising to step in to protect my delicate ears. They aren’t children!

I agree!! Why does OP assume we dont want to hear sexual innuendo? 🤣😅😂

I'm quite shocked at that and I am in my 50's.

I think anyone older is probably "ehh, Maureen, what's this anal thing they are talking about? And what's going down on someone? Is he proposing?"

Come on now, people have been having anal and oral sex since the year dot. I'd be amazed if any adult had never heard of either, even the really elderly people who for some reason you think are a) not sexually active b) are a bit sexually naive.

agri · 08/09/2026 14:07

I don’t think you should have said anything. I can see why your Sister is annoyed.

I imagine your elderly relatives were enjoying earwigging on the salacious gossip and are still telling their friends about it and having a good laugh! Probably the most excitement they'll have in their lives for a little while.

You shouldn't have said anything, but dsis did over react a bit. However she'll be on an adrenaline high for a few days because it is her wedding so all emotional are going to be raised. Give her a break and try to get things back on an evening keel

How incredibly patronising

ooeygooeychewy · 08/09/2026 14:07

Your sister's friend is trashy. That's just gross to discuss where people you hardly know can hear, especially the older relatives of your friend. YWNBU and your sister is ridiculous to hold a grudge over this. I'd act as normal and leave it to her to decide when she comes back to her senses (or becomes bored with giving you the cold shoulder).

This is exactly the sort of talk that imo would liven up a pre wedding meal 😂

If you ‘older’ relatives didn’t want to hear they could have said so themselves.

you shouldn’t be policing what other people can listen to or converse about

I'm sure the older relatives had the nous to know that it wouldn't be a good idea to upbraid the bridesmaid publicly.

NovemberMorn · 08/09/2026 14:00

I would have said something at the time, jokingly, but the TMI line is good.
No way would I follow an adult and chastise them over a sexual conversation like that....had kids been present, maybe a different approach, but adults can take it, I'm sure.

saraclara · 08/09/2026 14:00

I'd have tried to make a joke of it and said something along the lines of "I'm not sure that great-aunt Doreen was expecting to listen to this!" or "cover your ears great-aunt Doreen!" .. and hope that the bridesmaid took the hint.

Unless you and bridesmaid are close friends, it was weird to follow her to the toilets to complain about her behaviour.

You FOLLOWED her to the bathroom? Like got up... followed her... and tried to dictate her conversation?

Wowweeee

Details are inappropriate (mentioning that 1 adult had sex with 2 adults is hardly outrageous, it was a private party, not a funeral or a work event, who cares, just don't join in and bring the conversation to something else?)

but the OP was just as inappropriate

Clearly I am a prude !

depending on the menu, I"d rather you waited for the coffee to arrive before going into the full story frankly

amber763 · 08/09/2026 13:57

Yeah id absolutely have told one of my sisters drunk mates to reign it in if she was sitting talking about anal sex in front of my gran or great auntie Mary. Ignore your sisters nonsense

ThePurpleShark · 08/09/2026 13:57

Lomonald · 08/09/2026 13:48

I am genuinely surprised posters think talking about having sex with 2 people on the same night is appropriate dinner conversation! I mean fine amongst your friends or peers but do people not read situations anymore?
