Or maybe you have just reclaimed it for yourself ! I agree groups of people might reclaim words for each other amongst their peers etc etc. That doesn't mean it is for general use or discussion. If Miriam Margolyes personally referred to me as a "cripple" to try and relate she would get an earful, i am in a group for women with my specific disability we are not all calling each other cripples.

Of course you wouldn't use it at work - it's a self-describing label that some disabled people are re-claiming for themselves, because it is offensive. It's not a politically correct term to use.

Minoritised groups often reclaim offensive words to take back power. This has a long history.

I knew she was batshit when I watched her Australia programme and she ate a whole raw onion for breakfast the way you would eat an apple - apparently a regular habit. The breath!!!

She knows exactly what she is doing. She sets out to shock because it amuses her. Programmes keep bringing her on precisely because they know she's a loose canon and she is a talking point. She reminds me of my MIL at that age which in hindsight was the beginnings of mixed dementia removing her filter. E g making a loud comment in a cafe that "people like that shouldn't be in here" about a well known lovely local lad with learning difficulties who tended to be a bit noisy.

I must say it's quite rewarding to see her getting her just desserts finally, publicly. I've heard a LOT of people who are disabled refer to themselves as cripples or their walking sticks as their 'crip sticks'. But you probably haven't, if you are not disabled yourself.
