Friend has cancelled on me last minute

Due to go away this weekend from Friday to Monday. Friend has been having rocky patch with husband. She has messaged me today saying she can no longer come as she needs to focus on her family and not have a boozy weekend away. I paid for the whole thing and she was going to cover activities. She has just done me a bank transfer for the full amount so I’m not out of pocket.

We have had many outings before but in the message she specified that at 42 she no longer really fancies boozy weekends and she feels that I haven’t made an effort to reach out at all in recent months and just doesn’t want to go anymore! I think she’s peri menopausal but it should be no excuse cancelling last minute. I wanted a break away from my family as well. I have told her she needs to prepare more for her kids going to uni this month and preparing for empty nest feelings. I don’t like her husband and have been questioning her relationship with him to her whilst they have been arguing and advising heavily to leave him because as she’s getting older she’s now going to pottery and walking groups and spending more and more time with him and I feel like we are losing our connection. I want to go out and be social like we normally are and she’s being extremely boring. Her husband has issues with me because I had an affair but was fine with me before now he seems to think I am a scary influence.

AIBU to just cut her off now?

I don't believe she meets up with the friend regularly though so if she is cancelling it will be a big disappointment.
I don't dispute not being able to stop is classed as a problem. That's why I don't go out drinking much as I know I'll end up with a major hangover.

She do this everytime though? Sometimes you just need a good drink and sometimes you misjudge your limit. Once you get the drink in you it can be hard to stop. I've usually had a good night even when vomiting and good to meet friends that you don't often see.

If it's "hard to stop"...then you have an alcohol problem. Binge drinking is an issue.
If you (or anyone else) can't limit themselves, it's an issue.

You can have a good night and catch up with friends WITHOUT getting vomit-in-the-street drunk!

I did as I haven't read the full thread but even so, who hasn't vomited before? It happens. I miss my drinking days. I don't get the opportunities very much now, although I don't miss the hangovers.

OP says she's out every weekend to let her hair down.
So it's certainly not a lack of opportunity and a hankering for her drinking days...

I think this is a teenager who was using their mum's account from the beginning, and has now changed their username. Go and get your homework done, silly boy / girl.

Just rewritten your post to help you out OP.

“Just posting here to say how amazing my friend is. We had a planned weekend away, sharing costs, but due to a family problem she has had to cancel. She has paid me for everything – yes everything – so that I am not out of pocket; even though she obviously has much more important things to think about than me. I hope I am a good friend to her but sometimes I think ‘what did I do to deserve such kindness?’”

I also thought it was incredibly aware of the friend to cover the entire cost.

Most people can handle their drink by their 40s and are not vomiting in the street, making a spectacle of themselves and in need of nursemaiding home. It's just sad, immature behaviour, forgivable in teenagers but not fully fledged adults. I say that as someone who is far from teetotal.

There's a difference between going out for a drink, and ending up staying for 2 or 3, and getting so hammered that you vomit in the street and need help getting home.

Where does she say she gets in a state? Sometimes it's difficult to stop drinking and get the balance right. She sounds like she just wants to have a good time, not such a crime?

Did you miss the part where she said she vomits in the street and needs to be put in a taxi?

And yes OP, we know it’s you commenting under a different name

There’s letting your hair down, and there’s getting yourself in such a state that you cannot look after yourself and you ruin other people’s nights because they then have to look after you. I think it’s incredibly selfish behaviour to expect other people to have to deal with someone in that state.

Bit harsh. She sounds a good friend and wanting to let her hair down. Understandably if married.

When you post your story as if it's the other party posting. So in this case things like 'I want to go out and be social like we normally are and she’s being extremely boring. Her husband has issues with me because I had an affair' sound so unlike the way people actually speak about their friends, people start to wonder what the situation actually is. It is a reverse, it is a troll etc.
So people wondered if it might be the friend who cancelled posting, knowing that 'AIBU to cancel on my boozy mate' might not get honest answers.

Thanks so much for replying, it's been baffling me! All clear now, thank you 😊 🙏🏼

I think the OP must have got bored and buggered off

Yep, I think she's run off to get blind drunk with her younger ''friends'' whilst chatting up random men to buy her drinks and believing all the compliments they throw at her are genuine.

OP, you come across as so insecure that you measure your self worth in how many random men will buy you drinks, and that a good night out involves copious amounts of alcohol and throwing up.

Your friend seems to have - RIGHTLY - outgrown your behaviour a long time ago, but you still refuse to see it.
Stop trying to drag her down to your level.

You're 42 years old, OP. although I'm sure you believe you look much younger.
Is there a reason why you can't go on holiday or spend time with your husband???

She’s probably in the pub with her husbands mates, cramping their style.

Thirteenblackcats · 09/09/2026 19:00

You don’t sound like a nice person, I wouldn’t want to go with you either.

I'm 33 and the idea of going to clubs full of 18 year olds getting pissed all weekend would make me want to die 🙃😂 How old are you OP? 👀

Maybe she doesn't wanna get drunk and make a fool of herself. maybe wine now gives her explosive diarrhea.. Maybe it's Maybelline..

Who cares her reasons, she doesn't want to 🤦 and you can't decide she does

Don't worry about "cutting her off" She's dropping you like a sack of spuds 🙃😅 and id imagine if you did "go round there" she'll watch you stand on the doorstep through the doorbell cam and her and her DH will have a jolly good laugh about it

ETA : what's a reverse?

Edited

A reverse is when a poster describes the situation from the other party’s point of view, instead of their own, to see whether readers would agree with that version. It’s a way of checking whether they’re being unfair, biased, or missing something.

Why people do it

  • To see if the “other side” sounds more reasonable than their own stance
  • To test whether they’re being unreasonable without admitting it outright
  • To get honest reactions without people being influenced by the OP’s emotions
  • Sometimes to highlight how ridiculous the other person’s behaviour is by showing how it would look if they were the one posting
Example If the real situation is: “My friend cancelled on me last minute again and I’m fed up.” A reverse might be written as: “I cancelled on my friend last minute again. She’s annoyed - is she being unreasonable?”

Readers then respond to that version, and the OP can see whether the friend’s feelings are justified.

There are lots of piss heads in the town centre, perhaps you could hang out with them.

bookofnonsense · 09/09/2026 10:47

She wasn’t a friend, she was a drinking buddy, she’s outgrown going out and pissing it up, she’s outgrown you.
Find another drinking buddy.

LeaveMeBee · 09/09/2026 09:24

I'm more concerned that you mentioned having children and yet you're out (on the piss by the sound of it) every weekend?

What about time with your kids and husband?

Genuinely, get to therapy and work out what you're running from. I suspect there's a lot of projection and some underlying issues with disliking men...as you seem to have a real issue with her husband in particular, rather than accepting she is 42 and weekends doing DIY with hubby and going round charity shops seems a very 'normal' weekend!

Whilst there's no age limit on fun or drinking...your behaviour sounds problematic.
You said you don't "do anything" yet accept drinks from men...have you not heard of spiking?
You throw up in the street.

To be honest, I suspect your friend has had the realisation that her children are off to Uni ..thus she is no longer 'responsible' for children..yet on your nights out, it seems that YOU are the liability and need babysitting because you get in a drunken state.
Maybe she's tired of that dynamic.
Maybe she wants to "let her hair down" too, but with another adult who has self-control and can limit themselves.

She's been a decent friend to you by making sure you got home safe the time you were too drunk to do that yourself.

But I think it's time for YOU to grow up and act more responsibly.

You can still go on the break away, take a book and see the sights.

I'm younger than you and couldn't think of anything worse than ayia nappa and afterparties!!

I don’t have a drinking problem. I just like having a party for god sake I’m out every weekend and no one ever comments around me

A woman in her 40’s, who goes out drinking every weekend, and cheats on her significantly younger husband is fucking tragic 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
