To be annoyed nobody mentioned who started the war

Recently on YouTube the Oxford Union Channel released a debate titled this house believes Israel never really wanted peace. I'm not going to go through the arguments back and forth as anyone can watch it, however what's really annoyed me is that's not a single debater, including on the Israel side, mentioned who actually started the war.

There was a lot of talk whether Israel did truly ever want peace or not, but nobody actually spoke of the fact that Israel never started any wars. It was the Arabs and Palestinians who started first the Civil War in 1947, then Israel's war of independence in 1948. I would think the onus for peace is on the party who actually started all the wars.

It's such a weird debate to pull up Israel for 'never truly wanting peace' while completely ignoring the role of the other side who actually started all the wars.

People do like to pick a point in history to back up their own position. The area has been at war for millennia. Pretty much all borders to all countries have been established through wars, so perhaps a better question is why has this area not become stabilised like other areas?

Israel retaliation became disproportionate very early on. At this point, the responsibility turned sides. Hamas is a murderous terrorist group who put their people in immense danger. The state of Israel doesn't represent the world Jews ( as expressed by most Rabbis in the UK today). All of the above is true so it's not as simple as saying " yes but they started it".

Yet, they are reviled as a collective nation for their Government's response to it.

It's insanity.

Which is exactly what I said before, his 'support' boils down to treating the government of Gaza as the government of Gaza.

Hamas was not only the military wing but the civilian government. The people of Gaza depended on Hamas for all administrative functions. So Israel allowed foreign aid in to Gaza, and for that you get loonies saying Netanyahu supported Hamas.

As an aside, you can't have it both ways. See the outcry when Israel limited incoming aid in war time when there were many Israeli hostages in Gaza. Imagine if they'd have limited aid into Gaza in relative peace time.

I bet I can guess those sources. He needed to calm things down in the region, one if which was stopping violent protests. There were negotiations to be done.

Objectively from an outsiders point of view, with no affiliation to either side and as an atheist, it ultimately comes down to religion and both sides believing it’s their religious home. If they all shared the same belief system then this wouldn’t be an issue would it. Same with Northern Ireland and the Protestant and Catholic fighting.

As I said, not completely, however to deny opposing religious views were nothing to do with it, is like denying the existence of any issue, so I don’t know why you’re rolling your eyes. You do realise that there was wall to separate the Catholics and Protestants?
