Aibu feeling uneasy about men taking little girls to the toilet in the womens toilet?

I've seen this a few times and I dont know what is the right thing to do.
So the other week we were at the cinema. I took my daughter to the toilet and as I was waiting for her a man came out of a cubicle with a little girl and went to wash her hands.
It got me thinking.
I feel uncomfortable a man in the womens toilet. I understand how you'd potentially feel uncomfortable taking a daughter into the mens toilets.
And the only other option in this situation was the disabled toilet but morally thats wrong.

I dont know what I feel is right in this situation so wanted to know other people's opinions.
So yabu: its right for a man to take girl into female toilets
Yanbu: he should take her somewhere else...but where?

What exactly do you think men are doing? When they are stood at the urinal nobody can see anything except the back of the man!

Wrong! My son was abused in a men’s toilet and has observed man wanking next to him since.

No man should enter a woman's toilet.
Good men stay out so bad men stand out.
By making an exemption for Dad of the Year and his darling princess, by accepting that she might be intimidated by men, we are overriding the feelings of other women and girls who will be intimidated by him.

Good women understand that if the only option is the men's with urinals most parents don't want their girls to have to see a load of penises. I don't and I live with 4 men/boys.

So little girls seeing men naked or with their penises out in the men’s toilets is less traumatic than an adult woman seeing a fully clothed man helping his small daughter use the toilet?

Feels like backwards day.

It’s not traumatic don’t be ridiculous. What’s traumatic about a man doing a pee ? Children are not sexual beings . Adult men are . Adult men should not be in the ladies . If little girls should not walk through the men’s then little boys should not either .

Women who have been raped don’t want to be vulnerable around unknown men . Women need single sex spaces. Women of certain religious beliefs don’t want to be sharing intimate spaces with a man. You can’t think of any risk?

So a dad might rape a woman with his little daughter right there? How does this dystopian event even enter your mind?

What?? 🤣

He's taking his little girl because she needs a wee, some nose poke tells him to get out and it would be 'alarming' if he rolls his eyes and continues his legitimate business?

If you ask a man to leave in a single sex spaces and he disregards the request that tells you everything.

kittybloom · Yesterday 12:06

For all those say using the disabled loo, what if a disabled person needs access to it? The dad has options. The disabled person doesn't. Comparable to the use of a pram in the wheelchair space. Disabled people count too!

ExtraOnions · Yesterday 12:05

I think some people here might never have been inside a male toilet. They aren’t all walking round with their Nobs out. They are facing the wall, they have their penis in their hand… so unless it’s massive nobody is seeing anything.

If the child is very little then either the mens or disabled/family. No way should a man enter female toilets with his daughter.

You say disabled/family toilets like they are interchangeable. That isn't always the case. Some toilet are just for the use of disabled people. I have a disabled daughter and quite frequently have to wait for a parent with either multiple kids or a child of the opposite sex to vacate the toilet. It can be mildly frustrating, nevertheless I understand the parent made the best call given the circumstances. So just get on with the job at hand and think nothing more of it. Random man using the toilet, by all means make as much fuss as you like, a man taking his daughter to the toilet, maybe cut him some slack.

They can use the cubicle in the men’s toilet . I went to the men’s changing rooms with my dad when I was a child . I can vaguely remember seeing the urinals and thinking they were gross . If I caught a glimpse of a man naked it certainly didn’t do me any harm. What’s the big deal ? Seeing men minding their own business doing a pee isn’t a traumatic or sexual sight . It’s just life . Fgs such ridiculous snowflakey attitudes

I am guilty but from the other side. If there are no disabled toilets I have to take my son who has Down Syndrome and epilepsy into the ladies. I always check first with the ladies and have never had a problem, everyone has been so kind.

Can anyone actually explain why it'a wrong, where the risk lies or why they are uncomfortable?

There's a lot of sweeping statements but the reasin why us missing from the majority?

I think this is absolute nonsense.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with a father taking his little girl into the female toliets and it's a far better option given the urinals in most men's toilets.

People give out about absent fathers yet critise the men looking after their kids in situations like this.

What's the risk? What's the threat?
There is none.

Disabled toilets exit for a reason and should not be used instead.

Men can't do anything right according to MN!.

There’s cubicles as well, you think men shit in urinals ?

Tralalalala88 · Yesterday 12:01

redbullsurvivor · Yesterday 11:40

I can’t even put into words how much I disagree with you and think YABVU.

Men’s toilets have urinals. Why should a little girl be faced with penises of other men, rather than a cubicle with her dad in a normal bathroom?

Insane.

They can use the cubicle in the men’s toilet . I went to the men’s changing rooms with my dad when I was a child . I can vaguely remember seeing the urinals and thinking they were gross . YABU to say that it's morally wrong to use the disabled toilets for this. It's a perfect use case.

5682Jhd · Yesterday 12:01

YANBU but there should be a third space for dads to take little girls and for mums to take little boys. Was there another space or was it just ladies/mens?

TinyTempest · Yesterday 12:01

If I see a man in women's toilets regardless of who he is with I will tell him to leave

Will the people saying "use the disabled toilet" please stop. That is completely unacceptable

Don't be ridiculous.

If the toilet is vacant, of course it's not unacceptable.

And if they come out to someone waiting, they'd have to wait if a disabled person had been in there.

NullaEffugium · Yesterday 11:58

Notateacheranymore · Yesterday 11:04

All of the times I have seen it - less than a dozen - he has been 100% engaged in his task, with a young lady CLEARLY too young to manage by herself, and some of them have even apologised for being in the space. I have always said they are fine, and have even stood by the door to let other ladies know as they enter so they can choose to or not. Not one woman has ever turned around and waited till he and his child left.

Maybe where I live is a den of acceptance for this, but the OP’s disapproval or hand wringing is a none event in real life.

It is same where I am.

ToffeePennie · Yesterday 11:57

In this situation - where there is a disabled loo available he should have taken them there.

Crow55 · Yesterday 11:57

The fact remains parents get to make their safeguarding decisions not a load of randoms on a MN thread.

The Legal Status

  • No criminal offense: There is no specific UK law that makes it a crime for a man to enter a women's public toilet to help his child.
  • Business rules: Private shops, restaurants, and venues set their own access policies.
  • EHRC guidance: The Equality and Human Rights Commission issued guidance stating that single-sex spaces like toilets should generally operate based on biological sex.
  • Not direct law: This official guidance helps businesses create local policies, but it is not a direct criminal statute
