Aibu feeling uneasy about men taking little girls to the toilet in the womens toilet?

I've seen this a few times and I dont know what is the right thing to do.
So the other week we were at the cinema. I took my daughter to the toilet and as I was waiting for her a man came out of a cubicle with a little girl and went to wash her hands.
It got me thinking.
I feel uncomfortable a man in the womens toilet. I understand how you'd potentially feel uncomfortable taking a daughter into the mens toilets.
And the only other option in this situation was the disabled toilet but morally thats wrong.

I dont know what I feel is right in this situation so wanted to know other people's opinions.
So yabu: its right for a man to take girl into female toilets
Yanbu: he should take her somewhere else...but where?

I have seen this with my children: more comfortable with groups of women they don’t know than men they don’t know. I think it might be instinctive.

Yes. It's not the main concern - nothing is going to actually happen as I am there as well and they forget about it as soon as they are out. But I thought why bother when I can use a disabled toilet.

I understand the argument if a disabled person ends up needing the toilet urgently and has to wait, but we are not in there for long, they may have to wait if anyone else was using it, and in reality I used disabled toilets dozens of times and not once was there someone waiting outside to go in other than when it was also a baby change.

Yeah, if that's what the mother and son think it's best for them.

I brought my DS into the boys from 6/7 he was really tall so could not use the women’s. I stood behind the wall, even now he’s 11, he uses the urinal. I stay outside but keep the door opened with my foot and my ears peaked.

And if a male child is out with his mother?

I don’t really care what you think.Common sense and child safeguarding rights absolutely should be the priority. No parent should do anything other than safeguard how they feel fit.

It’s not “safeguarding “ at all. You are using the term completely incorrectly here . The dad is with the child that’s the safeguarding . I did not say anything at all about a child going in alone , wherever you got that idea from . It’s “safeguarding “ to big grown men out of women’s toilets . It’s the epitome of selfishness. Oh and a male child goes into the women’s with their mother , men’s with their father . Just as it should be . You go to the toilet of the sex of the parent you are with. Simple as

WyrdHag · Yesterday 12:52

I guess it depends on the circumstances and the age of the child but it's certainly
not something I'd be thrilled about.

I used to go airshows with dad when I was a kid and he'd take me to the ladies and wait outside (which I guess some people may also have looked askance at if they hadn't seen him sending me in!)

Incorrect, they can turn round.

You think men turn around from a urinal and expose themselves to everyone in the room?

Do you watch a lot of videos of gay men on the internet?

Duckduckgander · Yesterday 12:51

FourSevenFive · Yesterday 12:38

So mothers should take 6-7 yo boys to men's if the boy would be more comfortable with that?

Yeah, if that's what the mother and son think it's best for them.

I can’t even put into words how much I disagree with you and think YABVU.

Men’s toilets have urinals. Why should a little girl be faced with penises of other men, rather than a cubicle with her dad in a normal bathroom?

Insane.

Agree. On balance it's better for her to go in the women's with dad, where everyone has the door closed, than have to be exposed to men at the urinals. If someone hears me pee in the next stall, well I'm a grown up and I'll never see them again.

ExtraOnions · Yesterday 12:51

Nearly all of these (one broken link), are about the dangers of men being in Women’s spaces (Ladies toilets). Supporting the view that adult men should stay out of Ladies toilets

olivepicanto · Yesterday 12:51

LilacBalloons · Yesterday 12:41

I'd much rather a man took his daughter into the women's than a little girl had to go into the men's. If there is no family bathroom a dad can, imo, knock and loudly announce that he's bringing his daughter in.

Would you feel the same if he took his young son into the Men's?

Crow55 · Yesterday 12:50

Tralalalala88 · Yesterday 12:48

I’m so sorry to hear about your son that is absolutely horrendous and heartbreaking .

however I still disagree with you because the dad would literally be right there with the child in the men’s so there is zero chance of this happening. If this is the case then no child can go into the men’s with their fathers , neither male nor female . And that’s just not feasible

The most they'll see is the back of a man using a urinal.
Why is it ok for a little boy to see that but not a little girl?
The disabled loo is not the answer

DazzlingPony · Yesterday 12:49

I’m disabled and personally wouldn’t mind if I was waiting and a dad and daughter came out of the toilet. My first instinct wouldn’t be that it was because of the sex of the child either. I’m old enough and disabled enough to understand there’s a plethora of reasons why an adult might need more space to manoeuvre a child when toileting them.

I know not everyone will agree with this but that’s my opinion and I’m not sure what the alternative is because I wouldn’t be happy with a male in the female toilets.

EmeraldShamrock000 · Yesterday 12:48

This is the one time that I overlook a man in the women’s toilet. The disabled toilet may not have been available. I’d rather any little girl use the ladies bathroom even with her father than have her face the men’s who have men holding their penis and it stinks to high heaven.
I still remember using the men’s as a little girl in the sports club with Dad. Not a pleasant memory.

It isn’t,my son was sexually abused aged 11 in a men’s toilet whilst I was outside. He has since disclosed during therapy also being subjected to man wanking next to him at urinals on more than one occasion. Children often don’t disclose sexual abuse until years later, sometimes never. It happens so your describing my fear as being based on absolutely nothing is incorrect.

Are you seriously telling me a child going alone into a men’s toilet is less dangerous than a man accompanying his daughter into a cubical in the ladies? I have never smothered my children in cotton wool .

No parent should be bullied into doing something they don’t feel is right as regards safeguarding. All parents should safeguard their child according to where they are at any given time. Toilets vary as do who uses them and children.

I’ve been in the ladies when there has been a knock on the door and a Dad has shouted “Dad with a small daughter about to come in”.
He stuck his head around saw it was only me in there washing my hands and asked if I minded that he had tried the gents and they were disgusting and smelt and the little one was desperate.
I told him to come in and then I stood in the doorway to let anyone else about to come in that there was a bloke in there with his little girl.
They were in there for a few minutes and then dashed out, he was really apologetic to the couple of ladies that had chosen to wait outside but no one minded.
Hopefully more places move with the times and offer family toilets in the baby changing areas etc.
My 6 year old boy comes into the ladies with me if we’re out without his big brothers/Dad. No way am I sending him into the gents on his own at that age, and even now with my 11 year old I stand right outside the door.

Crow55 · Yesterday 12:46

I think you have a misunderstanding of the men's toilets. The men aren't "exposed" because they're standing close to a wall that they are facing. The only way to see a penis in the men's toilets is by intentionally trying to look at one.

Incorrect, they can turn round.

Bromptotoo · Yesterday 12:45

I don't see what's wrong with using the disabled toilet in these circumstances. But if that was unavailable for any reason then, on balance, I think it's better he takes her to the ladies than to the gents. Imagine if someone was using the urinals!

The womens are all cubicles and all that's shared is hand washing but as a bloke I'd still not be comfortable using the

Absent a unisex/child specific loo you take them into the mens and use a cubicle.

Standing up at urinals is how men wee. You just explain that simple fact. Keep sensible spacing obvs - what will she see?

If all she needed was a wee our daughter was using the ladies in (eg) cafes and restaurants on her own at four. I waited outside. Biggest issue was doors too heavy or too fiercely self closing for her to manage.

Crow55 · Yesterday 12:45

Tralalalala88 · Yesterday 12:37

Yes but your choice is based on a ridiculous fear of absolutely nothing plus is incredibly selfish towards other women . If a little
girl shouldn’t be in there neither should a little boy . Little girls don’t need to be wrapped in cotton wool .

…this is because Women’s spaces are routinely disregarded, and used as the “default” option.

Male child goes into Male urinal with Dad .. no issue. Female child goes into Male urinal with Dad, it’s a massive safeguarding issue (apparently). Why is ok for a young boy to be exposed to these half-dressed men, waving their Penises around.

Why not make the Ladies toilets the default for all young children, so Dads can enter them with their Sons or Daughters, for fear that they might hear a man weeing in the Gents.

..small girls can’t be taken into the Gents, as men are predators.. so let’s say it’s ok for a man (one of those said predators) to enter a Women’s space, because they have a child with them.

Its creepier to take a girl into a stinky cesspit where men stand in a line exposing themselves!!
No. I am firmly with team take into ladies loo. We are more civilized and prefer to wee in private not public so we have cubicles; nothing for the dad to see. FGS!

They stand in a line minding their own business doing a piss. Who cares ? What are you sheltering them from exactly ?

Exposing themselves? They have their backs to the room! Shepherding dc into a cubicle is all that is required.

Men should not go in the ladies. Ever.

Fake story. The only reason why men go into women's toilets is if they want to do something they shouldn't be doing. Otherwise, men never try to legitimately enter the women's toilets.

Convention would be for men to bring young girls into the men's toilets. Being in the men's toilets isn't an issue because the cubicles are closed.
