Is the trans kids trend over? Aibu to wonder what happened to the kids caught up in it in the 2010s?

As we know the period from the mid 10s to early 20s has been described as “woke 1” and is apparently “over”.
When I was at secondary school in the 2010s, there were four trans kids in my year group (3 FTMs and one mtf) the one mtf was autistic and in foster care. I was always nice to them and kept my views to myself but I’m wondering what’s going on with them now, they’ve completely dropped off the radar. None of them have social media accounts and no one else I went to school with had heard from them.

My daughter has just entered year 5 and doesn’t know any trans kids or even what one is, my neighbours teenage children don’t know any either and they’re the age I was when four classmates transitioned.

I know there’s a lot of teachers on mumsnet would this be your experience too?

Ive tried googling this but everyone seems to have moved on from it I think there may be a forgotten generation who’s lives have been ruined

I do hope the madness is over and that those children affected have support to help them deal with this trauma. They have to deal with it for their whole lives.

Sadly it is by no means over.
You just have to look to find the information.

HereForTheFreeLunch · Yesterday 10:51

My teen's friend does - but no hormones as far as I am aware. No name change either, occasionally dresses differently.
And is aspiring to a single sex sixth form in birth sex.
So a mix of trans and keeping it real. Hopefully it will stay this way as teenage experimenting and nothing irreversable.

I was very surprised to meet a 5yo recently on holiday who checked whether my child's pronouns were he or she! I expressed surprise to their parents and they said the child had been taught that at school where they had a few trans classmates! In Reception!

I don't know of any cases like that where I live so I wouldn't be surprised if it's more common in some areas of the country than others.

Schools really should refuse to support this gaslighting nonsense ( the rest of the children are gaslighted). I know one school that quite rightly did.

Secretsquirrel2 · Yesterday 10:47

I hope Mumsnet doesn't move this thread. I think it can be helpful to mothers to understand what is happening in the lgbtq+ space. If you're going through that hell you'll need all the help you can get!
Personally I rarely go on the FWR due to posting and getting slaughtered late at night but that was some years ago.

Yes.
A thing.
Like the number of people who are chronically ill has increased since covid.
People diagnosed with POTS, a ‘side effect’ of catching covid. Which makes people feel dizzy, faint etc… (die to an inability to regulate blood pressure and HR btw)
The same POTS that can make you walk like you were drunk (loosing balance).
Yep, that must just be a trend. 🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️🤦‍♀️

Oh btw, if you need mobility aid, esp as a young person, can you explain why it can’t be decorated? Colourful? Why it has to be gray, sad looking and associated with being elderly?

That is not a new trend unfortunately. It’s pure ableism.

Not sure if you meant to direct this at me as this isn’t something I’ve commented on.

It is not over. Just last week, the Good Law Project, who share a director with Mumsnet, offered to fund 24 kids with puberty blockers and potentially cross sex hormones for free, sourced through Anne Health, run by a non medic who herself gave her son puberty blockers and cross sex hormones and took him to Thailand on his 16th birthday to have his penis inverted. In fact her and her mother found it hilarious that his penis was so small at that stage the doctors did not have enough material to work with.

Personally I think a Mumsnet Director adovcating to mutilate and sterilise kids is not 'in the spirit' of any parenting forum but hey ho.

So yes, people are still raging about it all, many people think sterilising and mutilating kids because they like the wrong toys is a bad thing.

I had NO idea about this. WTAF. Shame on Mumsnet.

I know two junior school children, mtf, who are being ‘transed’ by their Mothers, one is only five. Both of these Morhers ( two different mothers of two different families) have always been enthusiastic and vocal trans advocates and lo, they both have trans kids. So there will still be this cohort of kids who are transed by their indoctrinated Mothers.

TBH I am wondering how long it will be before one of the scolders comes along to demand that this thread is moved to said naughty corner.

GoldTie · Yesterday 10:39

I wasn’t aware of the walking sticks fad. I laughed at first and then was a bit torn. I’m all for destigmatising aids for hearing, mobility etc. But having looked at Reddit, find it really odd to find someone young describing their walking stick as a ‘cool way of accessorising’, though they say they do actually need it. I wonder how many actually need their stick though or will just find that they amazingly don’t need it any more in a couple of years when that fad passes.

DiaAssolellat · Yesterday 10:39

They grew up and realised that if they wanted to eat and have a roof over their heads they needed a job and would have to ditch the navel gazing.

Or they’re still living with mum and dad in their childhood bedroom and still insisting on being called whatever is their pronoun du jour, wondering why they can’t get a job.

BridgetYourFortyDaysAreUp · Yesterday 10:38

OP, for those of us who have had family members caught up in this, to the extent of having surgery, drugs, and a full rewrite of their entire childhood (although I refuse to agree that my sister-in-law gave birth to a boy because I was there in the first few days, and I helped to change, feed, bathe, and love a baby girl), unfortunately, this will never be over.

What my niece has now are all the mental health problems, autism, and lesbian-denial issues she had previously, plus now probably irreversible physical health problems due to the ruination this "trend" has made of her body. And, yes, she is still occasionally suicidal.

And we as a family can no longer discuss anything around this because her parents' guilt prevents them from seeing what they have allowed. They will never admit they were wrong, and their daughter's life has been ruined.

What a great result! 🙄

So, although it looks as though the trend for younger children may be waning, there are still plenty of older (young) people who are dealing with the fallout. And plenty of adults who should know better (and do) who are still going along with this horrible "trend."

So, as @ArabellaScott says
Its not over yet, although it bloody well should be.

I have a Ftm, born in 1999, 6ft 3, size 12 feet. Went through psychological counselling before any treatment. Receding hairline the same as his 4 brothers. It's not an easy journey & certainly not a tad for the majority.

Notateacheranymore · Yesterday 10:37

My friend’s youngster is FTM, turned 18 yesterday and has been on the hormones around 6 months.

But I haven’t worked in a school since 2013. However, I have been working in Child Services the last 2 years, and the number of Trans kids seems disproportionately high to gen pop.

100% agree with that, I'm a social worker and I see the impact of neglect and abuse on children and of course those who were sexually abused as children want to transition to be 'safe', or those who were emotionally abused and have zero self esteem want to change themselves to a whole new person, or are simply more vulnerable to grooming because they are sad, neglected and overlooked. Add to that the higher numbers of autistic teens both identifying as trans and coming into care as teens there is another demographic impact. The lack of questions being asked by those in charge about what this data means is shocking.

My current horror are these ‘pray away the gay’ bills coming in across England and Wales and Northern Ireland.

It’s free rein to ‘trans away the gay’.

The bills say gender identity is whatever you say it is (so xenogender, genderfluid inc) and the only way not to be a criminal is to affirm.

So they introduced gender ideology as settled law and also criminalise people who may actually care about the children and do watchful waiting.

The real harm of trans is when it becomes mediclaised and the harm is irreversible. Yet that is not going to be addressed in the legislation.

You know this is not ok and honestly the school could well fall foul of being accused of pushing ideology with changes to guidance.

Five year olds should understand sex. Its not something you can just pretend.

Yes I agree - but when 25% of a patient list ia made up of a less than one percent segment of children something has gone drastically wrong.

These children have had such adverse childhood experiences and the answer is to render them infertile, harm their sexuality and mutilate their genitals.

Utter madness.

Fascinating thread OP. Thank you.
The positive news is that the new KCSIE safeguarding guidance mentioned upthread & the DfE guidance on Sex / Relationships and Health Ed bring to an end the opportunities for trans lobby groups to gaslight children that their bodies can be wrong but a sex change will "cure" that.
Children must no longer be taught that that gender identity is a fact and SRHE must be factual and age appropriate with resources shared with parents.

"Schools should avoid language and activities which repeat or enforce gender stereotypes. Schools should be mindful to avoid any suggestion that social transition is a simple solution to feelings of distress or discomfort"

There's been concern for many years about the "school to gender clinic" pipeline with some schools handing over this area to activist teachers and lobby groups (who've earned a lot of money from this). That should come to an end and in the small minority of schools who still push this, parents finally have legislation and guidance to challenge them.

The children caught up in all this in the last decade are highly vulnerable with the data showing that they have countless other challenges - eating disorders, anxiety, self harm and ND. It's been unforgivable that we've failed to safeguard this vulnerable group but hopefully this will change with schools being compelled to prioritise safeguarding rather than promoting gender identity.

Link to the guidance if anyone wants to bookmark it

Could you expand on this. Truly shocked.

All of this is very well documented on the feminism board. The one that was set up by MN as a separate "naughty corner" because lots of other MNers didn't want the topic discussed/ didn't want to hear about it. Many of these people wanted concerned and worried parents sharing their experience and knowledge of this dangerous ideology silenced. They even managed to get some of them banned.
This ideology has gained huge traction by silencing, threatening and cancelling people who speak up.
Go over and read.

Bizarre. And also Scotland which is still more captured than England. Not least bizarre because all children in care homes have their own bedrooms already in England so I can't imagine a scenario where they don't - but please bear in mind the number of looked after children in care homes is very small compared to the wider looked after population.
