I worded it wrong, I meant both types of genitals, not full sets of both. There is a disorder where a person has both ovaries and testicles called ovotesticular DSD. A person suffering from it can have both ovaries and testicles (or just tissue but functioning) which produces eggs and forms sperm in the same body, sometimes with a uterus and fallopian tubes on one side and male internal ducts on the other. This isn’t just “ambiguous genitalia” but both types of gonadal tissue which are in the same body. Not to mention that sex classification isn't based on chromosomes alone and there are various ways to determine gender - chromosomes, hormones, gonads, internal and external organs/genitalia. You can't pick one of them (eg chromosomes) and say this is what determines gender. People can be born with a mix of traits and sometimes genuinely are difficult to classify as one gender

This. I work in FE and it's rife. I know at least one MtF and one FtM among staff. Students too many to count, a couple of FtM but mostly MtF. My heart sinks when I interact with an obvious male 17 year old who gives their name as Alice.

It was so obviously a social craze, a mania, but no one caught up in that wanted to believe it.

There are still lots where we are. Of those I know personally there are 2 M2F, 2 F to non binary and one F2M.

Without exception all 5 also have an autism diagnosis. I am curious and troubled by that as it makes me wonder if the feeling of social difference is being mistakenly interpreted as "so I must be in the wrong body". Only one of the people seems genuinely happy in her new gender (she was always a very feminine child and when her mum told me he was now she i just thought "ah yes that makes sense" - all of the others I was surprised by).

The F2M person is actually identifying as male for the third time and has transitioned twice before (and then back to F). I can't shake off the feeling that a lot of it is confusion they are trying to find a solution to. I think it's a bit flippant to call it a "trend" though. Some of these young folk are clearly really struggling.

I've had a look on Mermaids company history and Mumsnet. I cannot find any of the same directors on both. I haven't been able to look at trustees yet.

I am a teacher. There are definitely fewer trans-identifying kids, and of the trans kids I taught in that period three that I know of no longer identify as transgender. I currently teach only two FTM transgender students. However, I don’t know about the rest as I have no idea where they are.

I remember my old housemate being horrified by the name, after she was born. I quite like it 🤷‍♀️

However..school were very pushy with her , labeling situations and deliberately keeping parents in the dark with a 15 year old ..

Nobody is born with both sets of genitals.
Differences or Disorders of Sexual Development are sex specific. Each of them only affect one sex.
The only connexion with this ideology is when men like Caster Semenya and Imane Kalif use them to steal medals from women.

Nobody is born with both sets of genitals. Some people have a disorder/difference of sex development (the term now used instead of intersex, to avoid exactly this misconception). Some DSDs cause the external genitals to be ambiguous and can therefore mean the baby's sex is incorrectly recorded at birth. Some affect internal or hormonal sex characteristics. DSDs are sex-specific - some affect only males, some only females. None mean a person is both sexes.

I think if teenagers don't know what being transgender is, that's probably an education issue rather than anything else.

I work with teens and most have an understanding of a wide variety of LGBTQ+ issues.

I agree that finding one’s tribe is important. The Italians have an expression, “Go with the lame and learn to limp” which I think does apply in many cases.

I don’t know if it’s over. My two dc went to (different) special schools and knew many trans students. The one I know of (ftm) has just been released from prison for the second time at the age of 20. It was in the local press with a picture where they still had a masculine appearance.

The other ones (mtf) presented and lived as girls and to my knowledge are still the same and they must all be about 20 now. These are young people with severe emotional and behaviour problems to the extent they were in care and/or secure accommodation with full-time supervision.
