Is the trans kids trend over? Aibu to wonder what happened to the kids caught up in it in the 2010s?

As we know the period from the mid 10s to early 20s has been described as “woke 1” and is apparently “over”.
When I was at secondary school in the 2010s, there were four trans kids in my year group (3 FTMs and one mtf) the one mtf was autistic and in foster care. I was always nice to them and kept my views to myself but I’m wondering what’s going on with them now, they’ve completely dropped off the radar. None of them have social media accounts and no one else I went to school with had heard from them.

My daughter has just entered year 5 and doesn’t know any trans kids or even what one is, my neighbours teenage children don’t know any either and they’re the age I was when four classmates transitioned.

I know there’s a lot of teachers on mumsnet would this be your experience too?

Ive tried googling this but everyone seems to have moved on from it I think there may be a forgotten generation who’s lives have been ruined

There are still lots where we are. Of those I know personally there are 2 M2F, 2 F to non binary and one F2M.

Without exception all 5 also have an autism diagnosis. I am curious and troubled by that as it makes me wonder if the feeling of social difference is being mistakenly interpreted as "so I must be in the wrong body". Only one of the people seems genuinely happy in her new gender (she was always a very feminine child and when her mum told me he was now she i just thought "ah yes that makes sense" - all of the others I was surprised by).

The F2M person is actually identifying as male for the third time and has transitioned twice before (and then back to F). I can't shake off the feeling that a lot of it is confusion they are trying to find a solution to. I think it's a bit flippant to call it a "trend" though. Some of these young folk are clearly really struggling.

Yes, I strongly suspect that it is to do with being autistic in many cases. It is normal to feel that way but unfortunately, there are some rather sinister individuals ready to jump in and claim, "Well, this is the reason why!" Then the child and/or young person ends up finding almost a sense of community amongst other people. Something that would more than likely have been sorely missing from their lives. It is really terrible how vulnerable individuals are essentially taken advantage of particularly with the outcome it can all have. (I am not trying to claim that it is simply to do with an individual being autistic in every case but it seems to be in an awful lot of cases)

There were four trans children in my daughter’s old school and they have all been assessed with autism. I definitely see a link between the two. One is still trans but the others have gone back to their real gender and are gay. I do wonder if being gay and going through puberty made them feel “wrong” and they thought they must be trans to make sense of it?! I do believe counselling should be offered and not hormones. We can all be who ever we want without changing gender.

Edited

I think this is where the change has happened. Teenage anxiety, insecurity about sexual orientation, adhd, autism, anorexia and bulimia triggering feelings of alienation and not fitting in was seized on by the trans lobby as proof that young people were trans, and then heavily and shamefully promoted by influencers, organisations like Stonewall and most appallingly by schools.

It is always hard for young people to go against the tide and no one in the history of the world has ever before been exposed to such pressure from social media as young people are currently, it is relentless. This coupled with the push to be seen as kind led to confused kids not being given the space to work out who they are.

I hope that better information and the truth about the real and permanent dangers of exposure to puberty blockers, breast binders, cross sex hormones and radical surgery is slowing the tide and giving both kids the chance to think for themselves and responsible adults to remember that young people are complex creatures and that it is important to look at all their experiences and anxieties not just jump on the one with the loudest shouty voices.

Schools really should refuse to support this gaslighting nonsense ( the rest of the children are gaslighted). I know one school that quite rightly did.

Schools really should do. As I posted earlier on in this thread, my child's school caused an enormous amount of damage due to their behaviours in relation to my child. They decided to call my child by their "new name" and they failed to ask me or even inform me of this. This happened despite the fact my child had a formal diagnosis of autism and some serious mental health issues which required medication. All of which was known to the school. I will never forgive any of the individuals involved in this. My child would come home extremely frustrated due to being called by the new name all day at school and then it not being the case at home (young siblings so was not possible). It broke our relationship. They encouraged this to a clearly very vulnerable young teenager with additional support needs and on psychiatric medication. Apologies for my ranting. I just have not really spoken about this very much. Schools really need to be careful about these matters.

I've had a look on Mermaids company history and Mumsnet. I cannot find any of the same directors on both. I haven't been able to look at trustees yet.

I did not even mention Mermaids.

HonestGoldAnt · Yesterday 12:42

In my childs year group, the trend is now to be pansexual non-binary , and we've also seen a couple of them identify as non-binary and a-sexual. We don't know of any that are taking it seriously enough to have medication or hormones.

I know a 10 YO autistic girl who thinks she's a boy

I knew a girl who said she was a boy in primary school. Now, aged 20, she's a girl with a boyfriend

My teacher DSIS thinks it's on the wane. Things like not permitting boys to join girl guides, or share a tent with girls on school camp etc. All of this makes a difference

The only kids I see being mutilated appear from a certain middle class background.

I wasn’t making light of people being affected by those deviants I was talking about the trans kids, very rarely from poor socioeconomic backgrounds.

A high percentage of those referred to the Tavistock were children in care. Julie Bindel has written about the phenomenon.

Why do so many girls in Blackpool want to become boys?

@DestituteDesperate not just middle class kids, if you look at the characteristics of children referred to the Tavistock gender clinic there were many with social factors including those in care

Yes, so what happened was that girls and young women finally realised that being a man means not having any close friends, so they collectively shit themselves and decided that transitioning is a bad thing after all.

How so?
This horrible ideology has been horrific for so many women. Rape and sexual assault victims, DV victims, women in prison, women and children in refuges, women in hospital ( staff and patients) the list is endless. I doubt they are all rich.

There were 3 in my childrens years (similar age to op) all 3 now live average lives as the gender they transitioned too. I have 2 of them on social media the 3rd I occasionally hear of via friends. If they before had social media as say Abigail Smith. They now have social media as Joshua Smith (made up names) 1 is in a long time welll established relationship of many years, 1 is single I dont know re the 3rd. All went to uni and are now out there having jobs... being adults living their lives.

Ethelspagetti · Yesterday 12:28

Hippodrome · Yesterday 09:58

I remember debating this with a friend years ago and they said some would call me a hypocrite for being anti teens transitioning when I had a child so young.
You’d have to have a real understanding of what being trans for life entails to know why it’s different. The hormones, the surgery. Even if the surgery is successful you will never have a real penis or vagina (seems obvious but not to a young kid who’s usually autistic or has trauma and just hasn’t been properly informed by the mermaid cheerleaders) you can look up the results of post op
surgery it’s not pretty.
These poor children were experimented on

Absolutely agree with your comment about experimentation. They were experimented on for sure.

I worded it wrong, I meant both types of genitals, not full sets of both. There is a disorder where a person has both ovaries and testicles called ovotesticular DSD. A person suffering from it can have both ovaries and testicles (or just tissue but functioning) which produces eggs and forms sperm in the same body, sometimes with a uterus and fallopian tubes on one side and male internal ducts on the other. This isn’t just “ambiguous genitalia” but both types of gonadal tissue which are in the same body. Not to mention that sex classification isn't based on chromosomes alone and there are various ways to determine gender - chromosomes, hormones, gonads, internal and external organs/genitalia. You can't pick one of them (eg chromosomes) and say this is what determines gender. People can be born with a mix of traits and sometimes genuinely are difficult to classify as one gender

Ovotesticular DSD is incredibly rare at between 1 in 20,000 & 1 in 100,000 (6-30 births per year in the UK). These patients don't produce both eggs & sperm in fact they usually produce neither. Your understanding of the biology of this disorder is flawed. It's only a handful of people & they really are not true hermaphrodites.

We classify by sex as it is a biological fact which cannot be changed while gender is just made up nonsense around stereotypes.

For some people the walking sticks are fashion accessories, yes, but also they are used as a victim-signal.

The girls that I taught have all desisted, but a friend’s relative - on the spectrum - is still identifying as trans.

Sex. Genes detemine sex.

And even in ovotesticular disorder people don't have both working organs. They may have streak tissue of both types. They don't produce both eggs and sperm. There has been 1 person ever with the codition proven to produce viable sperm - one other alleged but not proven - and no evidence that person also produced eggs

These disorders are astoundingly rare. And with modern medical techniques almost all are readily classified at birth.

And most importantly - people with these medical conditions are not the same thing as transexuals, as you originally claimed. Indeed they regularly ask to be kept out of the whole trans debate and not have their distressing medical conditions dragged in as spurious 'evidence'.

I'm sure you mean well but just to point out that there are only two sexes available for sex classification. No matter how sincerely or repeatedly people claim otherwise. Only women have the capacity to gestate and birth babies the world over - throughout history.

It has been so damaging to society to pretend otherwise. Facts, science and reality are what society is based on and pretending otherwise does nobody any good. We depend on being able to know what the truth is in an increasingly complex and disordered world and claiming that there are more than two sexes is untrue.

Icedvanillacoffee · Yesterday 12:09

@Kalanthe
I find the focus on people with very very rare conditions to do with differences of sex development really unhelpful. I follow someone with this condition on twitter and these medical conditions are constantly being used in the discussion about trans issues. These folks aren't trans they all know which sex they are. And frankly they don't like being used by anyone trying to make out that they are some sort of third sex.

carbontesting8418 · Yesterday 12:06

I know someone female to non binary. Changed their name to a male associated name. Dresses typically male. Insists child calls them mummy. I can’t work out what toilet they want to use but it is my understanding that they upset about toilet spaces. Asks to be called they/them but also wants to be referred to as trans masc? I can’t keep up to be honest.

I think the incidence of this is one in a hundred thousand live births, so really not that many statistically – or in this country (five in in each of the past three years, for example). And I would bet that the people with the condition would really prefer not to be dragged under the trans umbrella: they almost certainly have enough going on in real life without having to deal that as well.

It is over for the 16 year old and lower. It was always nonsense for the vast majority. There is always one tranny in any town so I expect it will go back to that.

🤞 to that, although I’m not holding my breath. My young adult kids seem to have a default of referring to everybody as ‘they’ - it’s fucking confusing (but at least slightly more neutral than full-on mispronoun fuckwittery)

I can really understand this .. getting diagnosed as autistic and with ADHD at age 50 ,I spent my whole life struggling and not knowing why I found everything so much more difficult and intense than everyone else seemed to .
If I was a teenager around now ,with all the focus on trans issues,I could of possibly come to the conclusion that was my issue.. especially as no one noticed my autism or ADHD as a teenager.
I can really see how lots of autistic teens could get swept under the trans umbrella
Especially as well ,as most are looking for a sense of belonging and acceptance, and going through life undiagnosed autistic, you don't get much belonging or acceptance..then suddenly you are part of a strong trans community, that is current in society, and you find the acceptance you have been longing for ..that's going to be hard to give up ..to just go back to the person you were before
